Order of worship PRELUDE Concerto No. 1 in A minor Allegro moderato J.S. Bach WELCOME AND INVOCATION In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (all turn to face the cross at the entrance to the sanctuary) ENTRANCE HYMN, #504 A Mighty Fortress is Our God GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic church. Fill it with all truth and peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in anything it is amiss, reform it; where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in need, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST LESSON: Jeremiah 31:31-34 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt--a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM Youth Choir Gracious Spirit Dwell with Me arr. K. Lee Scott 3
SECOND LESSON: Romans 3:19-28 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For "no human being will be justified in his sight" by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. HYMN, #509 God s Word is Our Great Heritage HOLY GOSPEL: John 8:31-36 The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." 33 They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, 'You will be made free'?" 34Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY, #720 We Are Called 4
Rite of Affirmation of Baptism PRESENTATION AND PRAYER A: These persons have been instructed in the Christian faith and desire to make public affirmation of their baptism. P: Dear friends, we give thanks to God for the gift of baptism and for these persons, one with us in the body of Christ, who affirm their baptism today as a sign of their participation in the life of this community of faith and its mission in the world. S: We present (name ) who desires to affirm (her/his) baptism. P: Let us pray Merciful God, we thank you for (names) whom you have made your own by water and the word in baptism. You have called them to yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them in the community of faith. Uphold your servants as they affirm the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth through this holy sacrament. We ask this in the name of Christ. C: Amen. RENUNCIATION OF EVIL P: As you affirm your baptism, I ask you to reject sin, profess your faith in Christ, and confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? R: I renounce them. P: Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? R: I renounce them. P: Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? R: I renounce them. PROFESSION OF FAITH P: (Name), do you turn to Christ as your Lord and Savior? R: In faith I turn to Christ. 5
P: With the whole church, let us confess our faith. Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. COMMITMENT P: You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s Supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? R: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. P: People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them in their lives in Christ? C: We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. MEMORY VERSES LAYING ON OF HANDS AND ANOINTING P: Let us pray...we give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give us new birth, wash us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. Stir up in (name) the gifts of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. C: Amen. 6
ACCLAMATION P: Let us give thanks for (names) as we carry out the life of this Christian community and its mission in the world. C: As your sisters and brothers in Christ, we rejoice with you. Together let us give praise to God and bear God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. PRAYERS AND PEACE Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs......gracious God Hear our prayer. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. PARISH CONCERNS OFFERING & OFFERTORY MUSIC Youth Choir We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight Michael D. Costello OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. Blessed are you... God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 7
OPENING DIALOG AND PROPER PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with all the faithful of every time and every place, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 8
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. FRACTION AND INVITATION DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION We welcome all who desire to receive the Lord s body and blood for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to join us for Holy Communion. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Red wine or white grape juice is available as each communicant chooses. Gluten-free bread is available. 12 Statements of Faith from the Confirmation Class of 2010 Karsten Matthew Hendrickson I will sing of your steadfast love, O LORD, for ever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 89:1 My faith story began when I was four years old and I came here for preschool. At the 2002 Easter Vigil I was baptized. Since that date I have been in the Angel, Cherub, Chorister, and now the Youth, choirs. I have presented numerous times with the choirs and have once played my clarinet as the opening music. My belief is in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Sometimes in sorrow it can be very hard to believe in the three, but at the same time they can be very helpful in getting me through the rough times. I am very happy I have faith in my life. Nicholas Paul Hirning God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea. Psalm 46:1-2 For me, confirmation isn t some small matter. For me, it s a full commitment. It s not a simple ceremony that can be forgotten once it s over. This is a major step in the growing of my faith. It s a chance for me to expand and let God guide me forth. I will now be a part of the community in which for so long I have been a guest and not a full member. I will now have the ability to help guide the church s decisions and to help us understand more of God. And with these responsibilities and capabilities and privileges comes a greater strength from God. Now, whenever I am defeated, I can seek him out within me for a refuge. When times of trouble assail me, I can find him for help. Now I will never be alone. Mark Alexander Mockett 3For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 I was baptized here at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church on June 8, I have been coming to PRLC my entire life and growing up in faith with the community through BFJ and Sunday School. I desire to affirm my baptism because I desire to continue growing in faith with my community as an adult. Our community here is united in Christ, and we are the closest when we are celebrating with God. I am anxious to be confirmed because I will be taking over responsibility to keep the promises that my parents made for me at the font. Affirming my baptism in the presence of my congregation will help me to keep the covenant that I will be making when I am confirmed. When I do something wrong, I am forgiven. The community gathers and supports each other through trials and triumphs. Affirming my baptism with the whole congregation will make them able to help me when I have troubles, get me involved with the community in other ways, and I can do the same for them. Faith guides my lifestyle by affecting how I behave and who my friends are. I wish for that to continue. 12
Elizabeth Anne Radford In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. God made the two great lights the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night and the stars. Genesis 1:1-5,16 When I was a young child my parents decided they wanted me to lead a religious life so they had me baptized. Although when I was younger I was not fond of church, it is now my favorite part of the week. Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church is so welcoming and friendly it would be hard not to like church. After I am confirmed I know I will feel closer to God than I do now because I will be beginning a new chapter in my faith journey in which every chapter brings me closer to God. While preparing to be confirmed we had a lot of stories read to us by Pastor Hoffman, they were stories of people coming closer to God in many different ways. But one of my favorite things was reading the creation story. It is my favorite part in the bible because it reminds you how God created everything for us so we could live. Amber Christine Ronald And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; And the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:13 My faith in Jesus shows me how to be kind to people. My faith in the Holy Spirit shows me how to help people. My faith family prays together, we go to services together and sing praises to God. I ll ask God for forgiveness when I do something wrong, and God loves and forgives me. My faith family is closest to each other when we sing together, eat together, worship together and laugh together. Reier Jacob VanSanford 8He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 As I think about my faith more, preparing for Affirmation of my Baptism, I realize that I am glad that my parents chose to baptize me when I was born. Because as I grow up and learn more about God, and the community that I take part in, I reach a greater understanding of something I will never fully understand, but I can grasp a stronger hold on it. This is something I may never have stumbled upon if my parents didn t choose to baptize me when I was young. Therefore I am confirming that I, by myself, choose to stay with God as I grow up and learn more about the world and make choices. 13
