1 PEACE Father The Apostles Creed Baptism SON Holy Communion +Holy Trinity Sunday 3 June 2012 Holy Spirit Word of God Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, Seattle, WA
2 The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Today s Triune Confession Within our service today, we will confess the Apostles Creed three different times, with three different postures. As we prepare to listen to the Word of God proclaimed in the Scriptures, we will turn to face one another across the center aisle. In this way, we confess to our brothers and sisters the faith that is planted deep within each one of us through the power of God's Word. Following the Hymn of the Day, we'll confess these same words again in their usual spot and with our front-facing posture. Planted at this place in the liturgy, it is an affirmation and an assent to all that has gone before, addressed to God. When we give witness to our faith in this place, and in this way, we are giving thanks to God for planting faith deep within us and responding with a sense of thanksgiving and joy to the power of the Gospel that has been proclaimed in the Scriptures of the day, in the sermon, and in the hymn of the day. Finally on this Holy Trinity Sunday, we will confess this ancient creed facing the entrance of our church. By doing so we confess the faith in which this service has grounded us for service in the world. By facing outward, we confess our intention to bring the apostolic faith our faith to the world. 2

Amen Opening Dialog and Proper Preface The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You reveal your glory as the glory of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, one Lord, one God, ever to be adored in your eternal glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise you name and join their unending hymn: 5

13 Announcements An opportunity for your vicar Hello sisters and brothers in Christ! It is always a gracious gift to be invited into another Christian community to experience their vision of the kingdom of God. I have been given the great opportunity to preach at St. John United Lutheran Church this morning. Pr. Carol Jensen is currently on sabbatical, and before leaving she asked if I could preach this Sunday. It was with great joy that I accepted this invitation to be a part of their worshipping community today. One of the amazing things about being a part of the Christian church is knowing that no matter where we are in the world on a Sunday morning, we are unified in our worship together. May God bless your worship at PRLC this morning as I worship with you at St. John United. Grace and peace, Vicar Gina Summer Bible Study for All Ages Begins This Week! On this Wednesday June 6, our summer of BIBLE BASICS will begin. It's a summer-long Wednesday evening Bible Study for anyone who's interested. The classes will run from 7:00-7:50 p.m. each Wednesday and will be held in the sanctuary or narthex, depending on class size. Pre-school childcare will be provided and a special unit on the Parables of Jesus will be available for those in elementary school. Each class is a stand-alone; so come to one, or come for the whole summer. Just to help in planning for space and resources for the first two weeks, a sign up is available today on Count Me In. The first two classes are: June 6 Getting to Know This Book of Books Led by Patrick Meagher June 13 The Stories that Open the Big Story Led by Pastor Hoffman 13
14 PRLC Endowment Funds Ministry The Endowment fund is a perpetual fund established by the congregation. It is administered by the Endowment Fund Committee. The committee is meeting on this Wednesday evening June 6 to consider grant requests. Congregation members are invited to submit requests. These requests typically fall into one of four categories. 1. Enhancing non-budgeted programs in capital repair and improvements of PRLC's property. 2. Extending the caring ministry of Jesus Christ through the mission and ministries of the larger church. 3. Strengthening faith and evangelism through ministry to the neighboring community of PRLC. 4. Providing scholarships for rostered and lay ministries of the ELCA. If you have a vision for ministry that could be supported by seed money from the PRLC Endowment, please write a request to the committee. Requests are considered quarterly. We will be meeting again in October to consider grant requests submitted after this meeting. If you have questions, or to submit a grant request, please contact our Parish Administrator, Darren Hochstedler, at dhochstedler@prlc.org. You can also reach him by calling the church office. 16 Community News for Children and Families Parents: Are you interested in incorporating more of your faith into your family's daily routine? Then you will want to attend this special event. Friday, June 8th ~ To Dance With God: Family Ritual in the Home, 7-8:30 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Drawing from her vast experience and expertise in the history, psychology, and spirituality of ritual in general and Christian ritual in particular, Gertrud Mueller Nelson will offer parents, friends, and ministers of children and families an evening to explore how we might move beyond superficial piety toward developing formational rhythms and rituals in the home that connect us to the meaning and flow of life. Cost: Free. Lecture open to the public. St. Paul's is on 15 Roy St. in lower Queen Anne. Know this: The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Psalm 100:3 Saturday, July 7th at 1 pm: The scriptures are full of imagery about sheep and shepherds but most of our children have never seen either. You can change this at a fun family event at The Weaving Works (in the University District at 4717 Brooklyn Ave. NE), where there will be sheep and shepherds in the parking lot for a demonstration of the noble art of sheep shearing. Parking is always tight in the U District so you may want to car pool. Helping Hands are Needed. Bethel Chinese Lutheran Church ( th Ave NE, Seattle) is looking for a Sunday School teacher to provide spiritual formation to their elementary age children (about 6 students) each Sunday between 11am and 12 pm. If you would like to volunteer to be a part of the ministry team that provides this service, please contact Nancy in the Children and Family Ministry Office: or nmonelli@prlc.org. 16

19 Welcome Visitors! We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. An Office Volunteer is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. Join us again! We worship every Sunday during the summer at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 19
