A Candlelight Service of The Holy Eucharist for Christmas Eve Friday, 24 December :00 p.m. Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church 7500 Greenwood Avenue North Seattle, Washington 98103

This evening s Christmas Eve liturgy offers us as a worshiping community the opportunity to praise God s gift of the Christ as the light of the world. Recalling the Bible s first words, In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep... [Genesis 1:1-2] and the words of the ancient Christmas chant Of the Father s Love Begotten,...ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega, he the source, the ending, he, we celebrate the gift of Christ who St. John reminds us was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him not one thing came into being. Throughout the service, the church is bathed in increasing amounts of light. It begins in semi-darkness, reminiscent of creation itself. As the promise of Christ is celebrated in the Old Testament texts, the light increases slightly. Finally, with the proclamation of the Gospel, each worshiper is offered the gift of Christ s light to hold throughout the proclamation of the Gospel and the sermon. As we respond with the hymn of the day and prayers, the church is fully clothed in joy and light and remains so through the Sacramental presence of Christ, the holy child of Bethlehem, made incarnate among us in the Eucharist. Welcome, one and all. Long-time friend or first-time visitor, we extend to you our open hands and open hearts, welcoming you to worship with us the Christ who is both the beginning and the end of all things. Welcome! 3

Entrance Procession Order of Worship Of the Father s Love Begotten sts. 1 & 2, soloists Apostolic Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Hymn of Praise #275 Angels, from the Realms of Glory Salutation and Prayer of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray...almighty God, you made this holy night shine with the brightness of the true Light. Grant that here on earth we may walk in the light of Jesus' presence and in the last day wake to the brightness of his glory; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. First Reading Isaiah 9:2-7 Congregational Response #295 Of the Father s Love Begotten st. 3, congregation Second Reading Titus 3:4-7 Verse/Gospel Procession #295 Of the Father s Love Begotten sts. 4 & 5, congregation 5
Holy Gospel Luke 2:1-14 Gospel Response #281 Silent Night, Holy Night! st. 1 Soloist st. 2 All st. 3 All During Silent Night the candlelight is spread from the Gospel station throughout the church. Homily Hymn of the Day #269 Once in Royal David s City Prayers and Peace Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs... As each petition concludes, Lord in your mercy, please respond, singing in four parts, Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. 6
Offering Offertory Anthem Wexford Carol arr. Mark Sedio Offertory Prayer Let us pray. Blessed are you O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Opening Dialogue and Proper Preface It is indeed right that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord. In the wonder and mystery of the Word made flesh you have opened the eyes of faith to a new and radiant vision of your glory; that, beholding the God made visible, we may be drawn to love the God whom we cannot see. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 7
The congregation sings: O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; Oh, come to us, abide with us, our Lord Immanuel! Eucharistic Prayer Holy God, Creator of all and Source of life, at the birth of time your word brought light into the world. In the fullness of time, you sent your Word, born of Mary, to shine in our darkness and to make us your daughters and sons. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his birth and life among us, his death and resurrection, we await his coming again when all things will be restored in him. By your Spirit bless us and this bread and cup, that held and nourished you, we may live as your children, shining with the light of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen. Elevation and Adoration The congregation sings: How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is giv n! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heav n. No ear may hear his coming; but, in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 8
Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Fraction and Invitation to the Table Tonight we commune by intinction at stations across the front of the church. The bread is dipped into the red wine or white grape juice. Gluten-free bread is available. We welcome all who desire to receive the Lord s body and blood for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to join us for Holy Communion. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Young children and others who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. Music During the Distribution Anthem Chancel Choir, O Magnum Mysterium O great mystery and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the Lord, new-born and lying in a manger. Blessed Virgin, whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Christ: Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with you. Johann Stadlmayr Congregational Hymns #283 O Come, All Ye Faithful #296 What Child is This st. 1 Harp and soloist st. 2 All st. 3 All #270 Hark! the Herald Angels Sing 9
Post-Communion Blessing and Prayer The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace, now and unto eternal life. Amen. Let us pray God of abundance, with this bread of life and cup of salvation you have united us with Christ, making us one with all your people. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Retiring Hymn #267 Joy to the World Benediction and Dismissal The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.
