PAGE HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 MARCH 2014 VOLUME 18, NUMBER 1 HIGHLIGHTS Chevy Chase United Methodist Church 7001 Connecticut Avenue Chevy Chase, MD Animate: Faith A Lenten Small Group with Pastor Kirkland Sundays from 6-7pm, beginning Sunday, March 2 So often we think of church, and faith itself, as a noun. But what happens when we see our community and our beliefs as verbs, compelling us to not simply hold an identity but to also go out into the world and be active on account of our faith and beliefs? Animate: Faith is a seven week small group that will explore central topics of Christianity and help you imaginatively explore how to live out and animate your faith. While answers are helpful, this small group will spend time exploring the questions we often find ourselves asking in our faith. And the focus will always be on practicing and animating faith as a way of knowing, rather than knowing only with our minds. Session topics include: God, religion, Jesus, salvation, the cross, the Bible, and the church. Pastor Kirkland will lead this seven week small group, which also features brief videos from leading voices in the Christian faith such as Nadia Bolz-Weber, Brian McLaren, Lillian Daniel and Bruce Reyes-Chow. Leadership Needed for Egg Hunt and Brunch Two of our favorite Easter family events need some new leadership. The loyal volunteers who have organized them in the past will be happy to advise and help beforehand but they are all going to be out of town over Easter weekend. The annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Saturday before Easter is for children from pre-school through age 5 (older children help hide eggs). Activities (cont d on page 6) Deepen Your Faith on Ash Wednesday Wednesday, March 5 7:00 to 9:30 am: Holy Grounds starting Lent with the ABC s (Ashes, Bagels and Coffee) 7:00 am to 7:30 pm: Chapel open for self-guided meditation and prayer 7:30 pm: Worship in the Sanctuary It has been said that Ash Wednesday is the most honest of days. The ancient Christian practice of receiving the sign of the cross in ash on our foreheads is an opportunity to present ourselves before God as people in need of grace and hope. In the Old Testament we read that in times of repentance and mourning people would rend the heart clean by marking themselves with ashes as they prayed for God s healing, deliverance, and hope. In the church today, the ashen mark of the cross is made to help us rend our own hearts clean and confess our need for God. As those who are mortal and are made of dust, as those who are limited and make mistakes, as those who need God s hope in our own lives, and as those claimed by God, we receive that ashen mark as those marked forever by the unfailing and everlasting love of God. Ash Wednesday begins the seven week season of Lent, the period of time when we prepare ourselves for the hope and joy of Easter morning. Before we arrive at that time when we look to the empty tomb we first are asked to spiritually prepare ourselves so we may fully receive the promise of Christ s resurrection. Lent is that time of spiritual preparation, and it begins with an ashen mark. 2 PAGE 2 HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 Worship During the Season of Lent Thawing snow and warming temperatures are signs that spring is (mercifully, after this particular winter) upon us. Look around and you ll find signs of new life in budding flowers, grasses that take on deeper green colors, songs of birds returning from their winter migration, and the beginning again of the spring cycle when all things become new. The natural world around us is not the only thing ready to experience new life. There is much around us and even within us that also yearns for thawing. Whether it s the cold and bitter debates too often found in Washington, DC, the frozen assets and opportunities of those struggling with finances or material needs, or the need for forgiveness or reconciliation in relationships, new life is needed and warranted. In worship during March and April, we will move through a spiritual season that may have a spring-like effect on us as people and as the church. This other season is Lent, a six week cycle that is intended to ready us for the new life of Easter by thawing our hearts and minds for God. To switch metaphors, the spiritual preparation in Lent is like the work a farmer does in a field before planting. The ground must be readied, turned over and tilled, made fresh with good air and soil so that the seeds planted may take root and grow. And if we hope to see the new life found in Easter take root in us then some time of preparation of ourselves is merited. During this Lent we will look to some of the spiritual disciplines that give renewing shape to our lives. These disciplines are broad-reaching in nature, and are more like commitments and values than they are like tasks or practices. Each is paired with a Bible story about Jesus to help us see how that discipline took shape in Jesus life and, in turn, may take shape in our lives. March Worship We worship on Sunday at 9:20 a.m. with a Contemporary Worship Service and at 10:40 a.m. with a Traditional Liturgical Worship Service. 3 PAGE 3 HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 Pastor s Column: The Parable of the Retired Snow Tubers In a recent sermon I shared an African proverb that says If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. When I was home that same Sunday I opened up the Washington Post to find an article that nicely captured the spirit of that African proverb. The article You don t have to be young to be a hotshot: Retirees and grandmas embrace snow tubing shares the first hand experiences of residents from Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg (where several Chevy Chase UMC members reside) snow tubing down a mountain. These retirees in their 70s, 80s, and 90s, and some who have one or two new hips as well, took to the slopes and conquered a 900 foot long snow tubing run. Sure, there were some early falls (this was a new experience for everyone involved) but soon the group got the hang of it. One woman, whose husband is a former Olympic skier and not interested in tubing, noted that the hard packed snow created many challenges, and occasionally threw people off their tubes as they slid down the run. Though they were going fast and having fun by going alone they often ended up on their own and stuck in the snow. That s about when they realized that if they went down in groups of two or more that they wouldn t spin around or get thrown from their tubes. Going in groups became the preferred method, not only because it kept them from falling off but because it also made them go faster. You may now be wondering how this story fits with that African proverb, since the snow tubers were able to go both faster and farther together. The answer to that is found in two direct quotes from the Washington Post article. The first from Ann Lindley, age 74, who said, Oh man, this is so much fun. It s like a bird - you re flying, you re free, it s just exhilarating. The second from Donne Engstrom, a lift operator at the slopes, who said about snow tubing, If [you re] able to do it, [you] should. It s good exercise, and it makes you feel young again. It s that sense of exhilaration and rediscovered ability that I find so compelling in this story. How a group of people, together arm-in-arm and flying down a snow tube run, were able to go fast and, more significantly, were able to travel beyond their self assumptions. One more quote. This one from Margaret Hartwell, age 76, who said on the bus ride home, I feel myself again.i think mostly people know what their body can and can t do, and if I had been apprehensive, I wouldn t have done it. I want to get back to where I was - I want my life back. And today was a good start. We all have our own desires for how to get back to where we were, whether in our work, relationships, physical abilities, or even availability of time so we can do things like go snow tubing on a weekday. We may have apprehensions, yet this group of retirees shows us that taking a leap of faith with others can overcome our risks and worries, and even make the journey fun and exciting. I believe this snow tubing story is a parable for the church. Go together, linking arms, have faith in the journey, and you ll share an exhilarating ride. And when we get to our destination we ll see that we re not the same people we were at the start. We ll become people who made it together, by the grace of God, and along the way got our lives back. All it takes is a willingness to try something new, together. Peace, Pastor Kirkland

PAGE 4 HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 Upcoming Opportunities Do Some Early Spring Cleaning The CCUMC Rummage Sale sponsored by the United Methodist Women is coming at the end of March. It provides a wonderful excuse to get rid of clutter like old toys, books, kitchen gadgets, linens, clothes, you name it. Place items on the stage in Phillips Hall beginning March 1. The last day to bring contributions is Tuesday, March 25 so they can be sorted and priced in time. Volunteers are needed to set up, sort and sell and clean up all week from Sunday, March 23 to Saturday, March 29 during the following times: Sunday from 4 to 7, setting up with pizza provided Monday, Mar. 24 through Thursday, Mar. 27 from 10 to 3 for sorting and pricing Thursday evening thru Saturday for selling Saturday, Mar. 29, cleaning up at 1:00 pm We will provide lunch during the week and dinner Thursday evening. Outreach is also a component of the seniors group and in past years PALS has made memorial gifts to the church, helped a catering company get started, given money to a graduate school piano student to help with costs for a New York City competition, and has contributed to the special projects of several of our guest speakers. Bradford Gowen will play a piano recital on Monday, March 10 at 11:00 am to kick off the 2014 season of PALS. The recital will be informal, with Bradford making pertinent remarks about the pieces he plays. After the program in the Sanctuary a home-cooked lunch will be served in the Epworth room. The cost is still only $5.00! On April 7 our program will be An African Safari. Our guest will be Mike Griffin, who will talk about and show amazing photos of his 2013 trip to Africa. As usual, a delicious meal will be enjoyed by all. Additional meetings are scheduled for May 5 and June 2; the details are in progress so save the dates. At the end of last year the PALS treasury amounted to $2,000 (from money paid for lunches and for absolutely voluntary dues!) Upon learning in December that Shepherd s Table was in dire need of funds to aid their vital feeding program, PALS contributed $500 in support of this important ministry. A large portion of the remaining treasury will go toward 2014 CCUMC needs. Thanks, PALS! Come and Be Fit Exercise is good for both body and mind. Our churchsponsored fitness class continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:00 am in the Epworth Room. Anyone is welcome to join in and have fun with certified instructor Fred Foster of Fitness for Life. Come in loose clothes and participate as you are comfortable, either sitting or standing. The modest cost is $12.00 for one session or $39.00 for 2 sessions per week for a month.

PAGE 5 HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 New Members On Sunday, February 2 we welcomed four new members into our faith community. Help us celebrate and welcome our newest members by getting to know a little about them here and connecting with them when you see them at church. While Nancy Olsen is new to Chevy Chase UMC she is not new to our music ministries. Nancy is a long-time friend of our organist Linda Ellinwood and in her new involvement in the congregation has already joined the chancel choir. She brings a deep faith and a commitment to the church s ministry and involvement in the community. Nancy once served in leadership in a Baptist congregation as a Deaconess and she looks forward to singing and serving in ministry as a member of Chevy Chase UMC. Nancy is retired and is a volunteer at the Children s Inn at NIH. Jon and Kelly Shannon live in Shepherd Park, a neighborhood in Northwest Washington, DC that is near Silver Spring, MD. They are Navy veterans and they now refer to themselves as bureaucrats. Jon works with the NOAA Fisheries Service and Kelly works with the Department of Justice. They are expecting their first child in June and have a wonderful dog named Bosley. Paul Tiao and his family are excited to join Chevy Chase UMC and be active in its ministries. Paul, along with his wife Varuni Dayaratna and their children Ethan and Aaron, are deeply involved in community sports and music activities. Ethan and Aaron have often played piano preludes for the 10:40 am traditional service. They look forward to serving the church and members of the local community who are in need. Paul works as an attorney and Varuni is an economist. A "Contest" for New Church Banners Since 2012 we have displayed banners on either side of the Sanctuary doors on Connecticut Avenue to mark the church s centennial celebration. Now that we are moving into our second century of ministry we invite you to submit your designs and ideas for new banners. Calling this a contest may be more than necessary, but we really do want your help in designing new banners to communicate our ministry and life to all those who drive and walk by the church. Please send in your ideas, whether written or drawn, to Pastor Kirkland or Cindy Hinchman, Highlights editor. The winner will receive thanks and praise and lunch with Pastor Kirkland.

PAGE 6 HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 Children and Youth Cherubim Choir An important goal of our children s program is to reinforce and give the Bible verses and Sunday school themes a musical expression. Young children from age 3 through first grade make up the Cherubim Choir and rehearse weekly with Marti Tarkington at the beginning of their Sunday school class. They celebrate the Bible in music and song throughout the year as they learn and sing: Songs that reflect stories of the Bible Hymns of praise Favorite Sunday school songs Prayers Psalms The Cherubim sing in both services several times a year. They will be singing this spring on March 16 and May 11 (Mother s Day) both during the 9:20 service and as a prelude to the 10:40 service. Older children are invited to join the Faith Chords who rehearse every Sunday at 10:30 am in the Chapel with Susan Rowe. Egg Hunt and Brunch (cont d from front page) in the past have included crafts, refreshments and eggdying followed by an egg hunt. We need someone to organize supplies and recruit volunteers. It s a popular activity with lots of supporters but we need leadership! The brunch is Easter Sunday morning from 9:30 to 11:00 am. People contribute breakfast casseroles, drinks, fruit and breads potluck-style. Some travelers will generously contribute ham or casseroles in advance. But we need an organizer to sign up volunteers for set up, clean up, etc. If you will provide some leadership or perhaps share the responsibility with a friend, please contact: For Egg Hunt Carolyn Greis at CAGreis@msn.com For the Brunch Mary Kay Harper at mkh1234@aol.com Second and third graders were treated to ice cream by teacher Judy Smith after successfully memorizing the names of the books of the Old Testament. Youth Ministry Changes Equipping a New Generation in Faith and Ministry Believing in God is not the issue; believing God matters is the issue. Information is not in short supply, discernment is The signature quality of adolescence is no longer lawlessness, but awelessness. - Kenda Creasy Dean and Ron Foster in The Godbearing Life Our youth ministry is in the midst of transition as we shift from a paid staff position of Youth Leader to a new model based around volunteer leadership. Beginning March 1, Monica Price will step into a new role as a member of the church by becoming our volunteer Youth Leader. Her ministry with the youth will continue the faithful work Jesse Parker has offered as Interim Director of Children and Youth Ministries, and further our efforts to develop a relevant and life-shaping youth ministry. Though our youth ministry is in a leadership transition, this is just another step in the direction we have been working and praying for as a church for some time. To provide a ministry that helps youth deepen their love and faith in Jesus, that enables youth to practice their faith through service, and that connects youth with the ministry of the church. Believing that God matters means that relationships matter. Our youth ministry excels at building relationships that matter, and in this new model of volunteer leadership we will continue to help youth form life-shaping relationships with God, the church, and the community. To learn more about our youth ministry and/or how to help out, contact Monica at mprice@chevychaseumc.org or , or Pastor Kirkland.

PAGE 8 HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 Happening in Worship and Ministry New General Secretary of United Methodist Mission Organization to be Installed at Chevy Chase UMC On Thursday, February 27 at 7:30 pm our church will host the worship service of installation for the new General Secretary of the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society (GBCS). This is a great opportunity for the congregation to support the work and ministry of the United Methodist Church and to welcome denominational, faith, and political leaders associated with GBCS. The General Board of Church and Society is located in the Methodist Building on Capitol Hill. GBCS s works on behalf of the church in advocacy and witness to the good news of Jesus Christ as a prophetic voice. GBCS helps local congregations like ours engage with political leaders to advocate for justice and healing, and to help give voice to those who often are unable to advocate for themselves. You may learn more about GBCS and its current initiatives at Rev. Dr. Susan Henry-Crowe is the incoming General Secretary at GBCS. Before coming to lead this ministry arm of the United Methodist Church, Rev. Dr. Henry-Crowe served as the Dean of the Chapel and Religious Life at Emory University. In that role she oversaw the inter-religious work and chaplaincy at Emory University, developed opportunities for mission work and alternative service opportunities, fostered inter-religious dialogue, and presided over the University s chapel. While Pastor Kirkland attended Emory for his undergraduate and seminary studies, he worked in Rev. Dr. Henry -Crowe s office and took her courses on United Methodist polity. Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Shrove Tuesday is March 4th. Mark your calendars!! All are invited to join together for the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Scouting at CCUMC In January, Troop 255 honored two of its members who earned the rank of Eagle Scout Daniel Condon (Troop 255 Eagle #112) and Michael Mitchell (T255 Eagle #113). Their names will be added to the plaque in Phillips Hall that lists all of the Scouts who earned the rank of Eagle in Troop 255 since its founding in Pastor Kirkland participated in the Special Court of Honor held to celebrate the achievements of these scouts. The troop also fielded a team in the annual Klondike Derby, a winter event where troops from Montgomery County demonstrate scouting skills, compete in sled races and have fun. 9 PAGE 9 HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 Missions and Social Concerns A Revolution in Education in Nepal: Ashley Hager to Highlight the Success of Teacher Training Innovations, March 9 Ashley Hager, Founder-Director of Nepal Teacher Training Innovations (NTTI), will speak to the CCUMC community, including the Youth Group, at a Potluck Supper on Sunday, March 9, at 6:00 pm. For the past four years NTTI has been training teachers in Nepal, moving instruction away from rote learning to creativity and critical thinking. The goal has been to reduce school attrition rates, particularly among girls, to help prepare Nepal's children to succeed in the world of the 21st century. NTTI staff do training sessions in the public schools in some of the most remote areas of Nepal, followed up by systematic individual observation. Since 2010 NTTI has trained more than 1300 teachers who have touched as many as 100,000 students. For the past several years our church has been providing financial support to NTTI, which also receives funding from other organizations in Asia and the U.S. Ashley has kept us informed regularly of NTTI's progress. At the Potluck Supper she will be making a PowerPoint presentation and looks forward to a wide-ranging discussion of the organization's accomplishments and approach. The evening is sponsored by the Missions & Social Concerns Committee, United Methodist Women and the Youth Group. Please let us know if you re coming by contacting Maribeth Gowen at or maribethgowen@gmail.com, or the church office at to let us know what you re bringing. PALS and Kids Serve Shepherd s Table Recently some of the oldest and youngest in the church joined efforts to serve hungry members of the local community. Both the PALS (Programs and Lunches for Seniors) and KWP (Kids with Purpose) ministries have offered aid and encouragement to Shepherd's Table in Silver Spring, MD. Shepherd's Table is a feeding and resource program that has a 30 year unbroken record of serving a freshly prepared dinner for anyone who is in need and hungry. On an average night there are 150 people attending the dinner service. In this cold season the support from PALS and KWP has gone a long way to support our neighbors who are hungry or homeless. In December, PALS generously gave a $500 donation to Shepherd's Table. PALS found itself in the fortunate position of having taken in more contributions than needed to fund its meals and programs. Out of their abundance they decided to share their gifts with others in need, including Shepherd s Table. In January, Kids With Purpose made placemats and table settings for the dinner service at Shepherd's Table. These handmade gifts are tangible expressions of God's grace and love, made by the kids in prayerful support of those who are hungry or homeless. As Christians we know food is a blessing and an opportunity to give thanks to God. We are a people who gather around a common table to receive God s abundant and Help Feed the Homeless in March Attention all cooks and generous contributors! The homeless are looking forward to a savory meal on March 16. We re open to suggestions for the March menu. There are always plenty of items to buy and drop off if cooking isn t the highlight of your day. Please take a look at the Sign-Up-Genius to see if you can help. I appreciate all your help, but the homeless men and women we serve are even more appreciative. Usually we have enough food to let a few take an extra serving to keep for Monday s dinner. Now that s rewarding! Much more rewarding than hearing my kids complain about turkey burgers and green beans, again! Please contact Jennifer Byrnes if you have any questions at Jbyrnes33@gmail.com or To sign up for a contribution, go to generous gifts. And as Christians we know that there are too many in the world and in our local community who too often find scarcity and hunger at their tables. Because of PALS and KWP our church has responded to that scarcity by offering resources and signs of support. These gifts have helped further the work we already do to address hunger. These gifts have also connected the table of blessing that we gather around at church with tables of need in our community. Thanks be to God for how the table connects us all.

PAGE 10 HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 2014 Green Team Green Gertie Dear Gertie, What can I do with all of the wire hangers hanging in my closet? They seem to multiply. Most recycling centers will not take them because of the protective plastic coating on them. Hung Up Hannah Dear Hannah, The Drycleaning and Laundry Institute has a nationwide campaign that just last year resulted in 30 million hangers being saved from going into landfills. Dry cleaners can sign up for this program, in which they agree to reuse hangers when possible and recycle others when they can. You can to for a list of cleaners that participate in this program. They will accept wire hangers and prevent tons (literally, 750 tons last year) of steel from ending up in landfills. Gertie Mortgage Update In December of 2010, the church refinanced its mortgage. The principal balance was $242,069 and the interest rate was 5.25%. Our monthly payment is $1, Our amortization schedule shows that our balance as of December 31, 2013 should have been $215,463. However, a few incredibly generous members have been making additional contributions to pay the mortgage balance down faster. In 2013 alone, we paid down the mortgage an extra $12,000 because of those mortgage prepayment gifts. Because of those gifts and the gifts in 2011 and 2012, our mortgage balance as of December 31, 2013 is $170,018. Because of these prepayments we have received and the interest we have saved because of these prepayments, our mortgage is $45,445 lower than scheduled.
