1 H ighlights Chevy Chase United Methodist Church Many, many thanks to the volunteers who spent hours sorting, folding, cleaning and pricing all that was donated for another very successful Rummage Sale. Thanks also to the many who donated items to be sold and to those who shopped for bargains! The United Methodist Women raised over $ 5,500 from the 3-day sale, all of which will be donated to mission projects. (More photos, p.7) Follow Sal the salamander and his cave dwelling friends on a Cave Quest from June 27 to July 1. See p.4 for more information. At the last Kids with Purpose on Sunday, April 17, the children gathered together to launch a newly developed mission project for CCUMC. We will be working together to support the children at the Kechene Orphanage Education, Technology and Sports Project in Ethiopia. Church member Carol Miller has presented this project idea to the UMW and to the Missions Committee for our membership to embrace, and it is one that you will hear more about in the coming year. It is a project she feels deeply connected to as her children Kalkidan, Hiwot and Allen spent time at this orphanage before she adopted them and brought them with her to the U.S. And it is her children who feel compelled to offer what they can now to the children at the orphanage, and to encourage our members to do the same. Kechene is an impoverished, densely populated area of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. In July nine youth and five adults from CCUMC will be heading to a workcamp in Prince George County, VA to do home repairs that the homeowners can not otherwise complete physically or financially. Your gift will directly help to alleviate the cost per person to attend the trip. Through our fundraising efforts we have cut the cost down from $500 to $300 per person and we hope to continue to bring the price down. Our sermon is entitled Follow Me. We hope you and your children will join us in worship and celebrate these young Christians faith journey. 3 I was at church the day it was reported that Prince died. There were folks all around the church preparing for our annual rummage sale and just about everyone I talked to was talking about Prince. Understandably so. Prince was one of those once-in-ageneration talents. His music and art will remain unique and in some ways unparalleled. Like other creative persons like him, Prince's legacy will hold a significant influence over popular music and culture for some time. On Facebook one of my friends wrote that God must be assembling the best band ever because all the musicians and artists who have died recently. Prince. Merle Haggard. Glenn Frey. B.B. King. To name a few. Together these talents would be more than a band, they would form a super group. And I'm sure all of heaven agrees they d make one super group. A United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma made the news by posting Prince's lyrics on their outdoor sign. Rev. Nathan Mattox, pastor of University UMC, changed the sign on April 21 to honor Prince and help him deal with the loss of a significant figure from his youth. The church sign read, "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today 2 get through this thing called life - Prince." These are words from Prince's song Let's Go Crazy" which you've probably heard if you've attended a DJ'd party in the last 30 years. One of the things we believe as United Methodists is that God is always present with us and influencing life. As a church we believe that Scripture is our primary insight into God's heart and will. We also believe that the tradition of the church, our personal experience with God, and our capacity to reflect and reason are means through which God's presence and influence is revealed. Our belief in God s ongoing activity is one of the reasons why I am a United Methodist. I believe it is significant and faithful to claim that God's activity in our tradition, experience, and reason help us interpret Scripture and grow in our discipleship. Scripture remains primary in our Christian lives while tradition, experience, and reason are also independent means for understanding God s activity. This means that as a church we believe God can speak to us through popular music and the creative works of artists. I won t go so far as to claim that Prince s music fully captures the gospel, but I do believe God can work through any thing. As a church we affirm this belief in our book of polity (i.e.: rules and standards), which we call the Book of Discipline. In the section on "Doctrinal Standards and our Theological Task" it says, "What matters most is that all four guidelines [Scripture, tradition, experience, reason] be brought to bear in faithful, serious, theological consideration. Insights arising from serious study of the Scriptures and tradition enrich contemporary experience. Imaginative and critical thought enables us to understand better the Bible and our common Christian history. So go pull out your old cassette tapes, friends, and listen to music that gives you joy and insight into the workings of the human soul. No matter who wrote the music or is singing that song you may find that you also sense the presence of God singing to you. Peace, Pastor Kirkland

4 Sign your child or children up for Cave Quest, an enriching experience at our Vacation Bible School. Kids will spend each day spelunking through field-tested activity stations with their Cave Crews (small groups of up to 5 kids and one leader). Every station is designed to reinforce the daily Bible Point in a hands-on, interactive way that keeps everyone engaged. You can also join in the fun by signing up to be a volunteer during VBS week. Whether your talents lie with music, drama and storytelling, arts and crafts or games, or whether you'd prefer to help out behind the scenes (or making the scenes: the backdrops and decorations, that is!) we would love to have you join our crew. SSL hours are available for youth volunteers. We are still accepting reservations for participants and helpers from age 3 to 5th grade for VBS at the following: The fee is $50 per child with $100 maximum per family. There will be a kickoff meeting on Sunday, May 1 from 6 to 7 pm to introduce all the adult and youth helpers to the curriculum. Anyone interested in volunteering this year is encouraged to attend. Ethiopian project (cont d from front page) desk chairs and bookshelves, soccer balls and other sports/ games equipment, and personal care products (soaps, lotions, etc.) - and perhaps something as basic to us - but not to them - as fruit! At Kids with Purpose, the children worked together to begin collecting English language children's books and writing letters to accompany them - telling the young Ethiopians why they liked reading the book, what their favorite part was, and maybe a little bit about themselves, too. The children are also learning a little bit about what it's like to live in Ethiopia. Watch for their colorful posters around the church announcing to everyone who reads them of the opportunities ahead to help with this mission project. The Children's Choir will perform on Mother's Day, May 8 at both services. The children are doing a wonderful job of practicing the song they will sing and we are sure the congregation will love their performance. Parents, please have your children continue to come to practice each Sunday from 10:30 to 10:45 am after Sunday School. If your family would like a printed copy of the music or a CD to practice please find a copy on the white shelves in Room 300. Remember that all children are invited to come and sing! 5 In the next few weeks there are some changes in the Christian Education Program at CCUMC. Sunday. May 8: On Mother s Day, the 4 th and 5 th grade Sunday School class will be leading the worship services at 9:30 and 11:00 am and there will be no Sunday school. This is something the children look forward to doing and have worked very hard to put together with their teacher Alison Gee. The children s choir, led by Lisa Moreau, will also be singing a wonderful Mother s Day song at both services. Sunday, June 5: On Teacher Appreciation Sunday we will celebrate and thank the individuals in the church that have served this past year to make the children s Christian education experience interesting, fun, and meaningful. Sunday, June 12: On Promotion/Graduation Sunday, all of the children attending Sunday School this past year will receive a certificate recognizing their participation. Summer Sunday School The final day of regular Sunday school will be on May 29, with summer Sunday school running from June 5 through August 28. As in the past, during the summer there will be one combined service at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary. This summer at the Sunday school time after the children s message, the children will have several opportunities to worship and experience service to the community and to our church. On the first and third Sundays of the month children will have the option to stay in worship or attend Children s Chapel following the children s message. In Children s Chapel, led by Amy Holton, Director of Youth and Children s Ministry, the children will be encouraged to learn about worship while experiencing their own fun-filled worship through scripture, song, and prayer. All children, rising K through 5 th grade, are welcome, but are not required to participate. Parents and guardians may attend Children s Chapel with their children if they wish. Additionally, nursery care will be available for preschool children on the first and third Sundays in Room 212. On the second and fourth Sundays of the month (and the fifth Sunday in July), the children will be working on mission projects during the regular Sunday school time. Please start talking to your children now about the choice of staying in the service or going to Children s Chapel, as well as completing mission projects. Youth group is for grades Join us for Sunday school at 9:45 am or meet with us on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 pm for some high energy games and casual discussion that will let you examine relevant faith by using media, news, and current events. The plan was to donate what you would have spent on alcohol (or maybe what you did spend if you decided to drink anyway) to a Spirit Fund. Now that Lent is over, the Missions Comm. will decide who to bless with these funds at their up-coming meeting on May 23. Please place your donation in the offering or online at any time and label it Spriit Fund - it is not too late to give. Join Pastor Kirkland and others for Theology on Capp on Monday, May 9 at Cosi in downtown Bethesda (7251 Woodmont Ave.). Have you ever wanted to be in a Bible study but can t find the time? Do you leave worship wishing you could talk about the Bible reading or sermon with others? This summer beginning June 5, Pastor Kirkland will offer a Sunday morning Bible study on the scriptures we read in worship. You do not need to sign up to participate in this study nor are you expected to attend all or most of the sessions. As opposed to other studies that focus on a particular theme or Biblical book, this Bible study allows you to attend when you are able or when you would like to study more about a particular scripture reading or sermon topic. Each week we will explore the readings and sermon topic from the previous Sunday s worship service. Our CCUMC Preschool is a non-profit, self-supportive program. The school provides a morning preschool program for children ages 2-5. Afternoon enrichment programs are also available. The school emphasizes learning through play and parental involvement and the low staff/ child ratio allows for individual attention for each child. The preschool includes nine large, bright, well-equipped classrooms, an all-purpose room for indoor play and two playgrounds. Covenant Bible Study is an in-depth group Bible study in which participants read and discuss the Bible together, learning how to love God - and each other - better. There are three 8-week sessions that explore different aspects of Covenant life. Each session examines what Covenant means, and the progression of a Covenant relationship with God. During Lent, we offered the first session of Covenant Bible Study, focusing on how the Covenant community is created and established. In the early summer we will begin the second session, focusing on how the community lives out their Covenant in faithful love and how the Biblical concept of Covenant may be applied to actual relationships in everyday life. 7 We are fortunate to be able to offer a home to Cub Scout Pack 255, Boy Scout Troop 255 and two Girl Scout troops. On April 24 we celebrated Scouting Sunday by encouraging Scouts to wear their uniforms to church and including Scouts in the worship service. Cub Scout Pack 255 was first chartered by CCUMC 75 years ago! The Pack truly appreciates the church's encouragement and the space provided for Pack meetings once each month through the school year and for bi-monthly leadership meetings. Pack 255 currently has 60+ members (a bit in flux this month with 5th grade Cub Scouts graduating to Boy Scouts & new, younger Cubs in the process of joining the pack) and nearly 20 BSA trained and registered leaders. The Pack (1st-5th grade) meets once per month Sept. - May usually on Monday evenings in Phillips' Hall. Dens which are grade level groups also meet monthly at a variety of nearby locations. Cub Scouting teaches the boys important life skills through a program that emphasizes fun, safety & building relationships with other Cub Scouts. Current activities have/or will include: Camping, hiking, campfires, songs, skits, outdoor skill-building, outdoor ethics training, creek cleanups Indoor rock wall climbing at Earth Treks STEM activities Building/launching model rockets Pinewood Derby car building & racing Raingutter Regatta Leather-craft Resident Summer Camp for boys entering 4th-5th grade Bike rides, mini-golf, and sports events. 8 Worship is an opportunity to turn ourselves toward God and to point people to Christ. Sacred music is a powerful and impactful element in worship that can cause worshipers to deepen their faith and their thirst to serve the Kingdom of God. In keeping with our mission to bring people together to better know God through Christ the Chevy Chase United Methodist Church music ministry is investing in our choral program by obtaining four singers who are of university and young professional age. These singers will participate in a new Choral Scholars program under the direction of our Director of Music and Worship Arts Blake Clark. The intent of the Choral Scholars ministry is to support to our traditional worship service as we continue to grow and develop new leaders within the congregation. Supporting the Sanctuary Choir in this way will help us build on our small but active choral ministry. We also believe that these additional singers and the quality they will produce will be a vital recruitment tool for the Sanctuary Choir. The Choral Scholar relationship will be mutually beneficial, providing CCUMC with consistency in worship and providing young singers with a positive environment to further develop their craft with the potential of mentorship from members of CCUMC. For this to become a reality we ask that you prayerfully consider financially supporting this new program. Your contribution will fund honorariums for the Choral Scholars Program. 9 Please help us keep our CCUMC Cares bags full and ready to hand out. For May we re asking for donations of oatmeal or other small-size cereal bars. Donations may be left in the basket in the art gallery. For more information contact Paul Tiao at Take a couple of bags from the CCUMC Cares basket with you when you leave on Sunday. The bags are intended to be handed out when you encounter street people in your travels. They are filled with non-perishable food items, water, shelter and emergency numbers, and other information. CCUMC is cooking for the homeless in Bethesda on Sunday, May 15. If you ve never tried this mission opportunity, please consider helping. We make three large main dishes (usually a casserole), provide a salad, frozen vegetables, bread and dessert. A few gallons of milk and OJ make the meal complete. Most of the items just need to be bought and delivered if you don t have time to cook. Please see the Sign-Up-Genius for a list of what s needed. The air is fresh from the night and it is even slightly cool. In fact I try to wake up at 5:30 so that I can have more of the freshness and be ready for this wonderful, sweet song. I can hear the birds at this time of the morning, as they greet the day in the coconut palm and bamboo grove next to our balcony. Sometimes I can see the amazing majestic hurraca, in the blue jay family but much larger with long stiff feathers crowning his head. He perches for a few moments on the bamboo, before he swoops away. Our Morning Song Es mi dios mi salvador, me salta el alma de gozo, pues el santo y poderoso, ha hecho en mi maravillas, por ser pequeña y sencilla. Translation: It is God my savior, My soul leaps with joy, For the holy and powerful one Has created miracles in me Though I am small and simple. Last week while at the university, which is just 2 blocks from our apartment, we heard our morning song wafting through the air at noon and Dane rushed to Ana Maria, a Catholic friend, to ask what it was. She identified it as part of the Annunciation to Mary, and Dane found it on YouTube as Katia Cardenal s rendition of El Angel del Cielo. Ana Maria told us it is played by a Catholic church in the neighborhood. This sweet song gives a great spiritual start to our day. It is also played at 6 p.m. when the heat has begun to abate and we like to sit out on our balcony. I told Dane we can t turn on the TV news until we ve heard our song. It starts in a minor key and then slips into a more joyous melody and makes our hearts glad. We plan to find the church that plays it and tell the priest what a blessing he has provided for us each day. One of God s gifts to us here in Managua. Editor s note: Judy and her husband Dane are in Managua, Nicaragua for three months to teach at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Evangelical University where many of our members have visited on church mission trips.

10 By Linda Worthington The General Conference is the top policy-making body in the world-wide United Methodist Church, and it meets every four years. Some 860 elected delegates will attend the 10-day United Methodist General Conference in Portland. Oregon, May The conference theme is Therefore Go, based on the great Commission in Matthew 28: In addition to the elected delegates, half clergy and half laity, some 4,000 people, many of them volunteers, will serve in a variety of roles, such as greeters, registration officials, marshals, pages, translators, guides, drivers, musicians, technicians, reporters and emergency responders. Of the delegates, 504 (58.3 %) will come from the annual conferences in the U.S., the remainder from conferences, called Central Conferences, in Europe, Africa and the Philippines. More than 2,500 visitors are also expected for the duration of the General Conference. What will happen at GC2016? For the first week, delegates meet in legislative sessions, akin to U.S. congressional legislative committees, to address nearly 1,000 pieces of legislation, in the form of resolutions that have been submitted by organizations, clergy or lay members. There they debate, hash out, discuss the assigned issue at hand, and come to a conclusion about whether it should be brought up in the plenary sessions on the floor during the second week. In addition to the global budget, the legislative sessions will address a wide range of issues such as: The first day, May 10, the body will decide if a new way of making decisions on some issues should be instituted. The proposed Group Discernment Process purportedly allows more people to voice their opinions and enter the decision making process. If accepted it would be used in the decision-making on the issues surrounding homosexuality. Changing the language in the Book of Discipline (the rules book of the denomination) on homosexuality. Since 1972 the church has proclaimed that all individuals are of sacred worth but the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. It now also includes that clergy may not officiate at same-sex unions, and that being a self-avowed practicing gay clergy member is a chargeable offense under church law. A revised resolution from the General Board of Church & Society, Our Call to End Gun Violence cites Micah s prophetic dream of turning weapons into plows. (Micah 4:1-4), but does not call for a ban on guns. Along with the hard work, days and nights are filled with a wide variety of wonderful worship experiences, music and fellowship. Outside the main convention hall, thousands of caucuses and interest groups meet continually in an effort to influence the legislation in one way or another. Uppermost is the Love Your Neighbor coalition of progressive groups from throughout the world. The Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference will be held from June 1 to June 4, 2016, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. This annual event is an opportunity for United Methodists from 631 churches in Washington, D.C., Maryland, the panhandle of West Virginia and Bermuda to gather for worship, fellowship, learning and holy conferencing as they conduct the business of the church.
