2 Fr. Bob Hogan, BBD Director Dan Dúet Asst. Director MIRACLES NEVER ENDING CONFERENCE: March 1-2, 2019 With our conference expenses coming up, and our spending $22,000 to replace the windows in the Center (this will happen the week after Christmas), we appreciate you using the enclosed envelope to make a donation to CCCR. We are excited to have Bob Canton who is known internationally (50 countries) for his healing/miracle services. He will help all of us to learn how to pray for one another for healing and miracles to manifest the Spirit; give glory to Jesus; and heal God s people. Please pick up registrations forms at CCCR. You need to register before the end of January to get the lower price. We also have posters for Churches. Invite people to the conference. Let them know it will be a powerful time of God s graces for healing, miracles and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. You will be blessed and will learn more about the ways that the Holy Spirit can work through you. CONFERENCE KICKOFF MASS AND LUNCH JANUARY 26, 2019 AT ST. 5 Back to the Basics By request: Praise and Worship - a teaching by Fr. Bob Hogan, BBD. What other topics would you like to see in an upcoming Charisletter? Just let me know by sending an to: dan@danduet.com. Dan Dúet, Asst. Director (This is the first of 2 parts) Praise and Worship - Fr. Bob Hogan, BBD Alleluia means praise the Lord. The psalms are the praises. At Pentecost the first result of the disciples being filled with the Holy Spirit was the gift of speaking in tongues, which was a proclamation of the mighty acts of God (Acts 2:4, 11). The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that praise is the form of prayer that recognizes most immediately that God is God. It lauds God for his own sake and gives him glory, quite beyond what he does, but simply because HE IS By praise, the Spirit is joined to our spirits to bear witness that we are children of God Praise embraces the other forms of prayer and carries them toward him who is its source and goal [God, the Father] (Catechism ) Through Jesus we are to continually offer God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name (Hebrews 13:15). The Psalms exhort us to this comtinual offering of praise: Greet God with a song of praise (95:2); enter the temple gates with praise (100:4); I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart (9:1); from the rising of the sun to its setting let the name of the Lord be praised (113:3); bless the Lord at all times; praise shall be always in my mouth (34:2); all you peoples clap your hands; shout to God with joufyl cries sing praise to God, sing praise (47:1,7); shout joyfully to God give him glorious praise (66:1-2); I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands, calling on your name. My soul shall savor the rich banquet of praise (63:5-6). The Book of Revelation describes the saints and angels in heaven proclaiming that God and his Son, Jesus, are worthy of blessing, honor, glory, mighty/power, thanksgiving, wisdom and praise (see 4:11; 5:12-14; 7:10-12). How can we participate more fully in the rich banquet of praise? Practice and Attitude of Praise in Daily Life There is a labor of love in developing the practice and attitude of praise and worship in our own lives, our prayer meetings and the Church. Often Catholics area more familiar with prayer that involves asking, thanking, reciting, conversin, meditation and quiet. We need to be educated about the value of the prayer of praise. The Mass is filled with prayers of praise, including the Glory to God, the Preface and Holy, and all the acclamations. Priests, deacons and religious (as well as those laypersons who pray the Liturgy of the Hours) start their day with the Invitatory Psalm, Come, let us sing to the Lord and shout for joy to the rock who saves us; let us greet him with praise and thanksgiving and sing joyful songs to him (95). Mary s Magnificat (Lk 1:56-55) is a beautiful prophetic prayer of praise. Paul exhorts us to be filled with the Holy Spirit, addressing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts (Eph. 5:18-20). The Purpose of Praise The purpose of praise is related primarily to God and secondarily to us: Our primary focus is to honor God by proclaiming, rejoicing, and uniting ourselves with God for his own sake and for what he has done. Three forms of honoring and praising God are found in the Psalms: 1) Proclamation Praise: The Holy Spirit working with our minds/memory to proclaim and announce to God, and to ourselves, the good news of what God has accomplished and the truths (Continued on next page) DEC JAN Page 5

6 (Continued from previous page) of our faith. Our minds and memories become rooted in God. Psalm 96:2-3 calls us to announce his salvation day after day. Tell God s glory among the nations; among all peoples, God s marvelous deeds. 2) Jubilation/Rejoicing Praise: The Holy Spirit energises our spirit with joyful praise. Our spirits and bodies become rooted in God. The infilling of the Holy Spirit lifts up our human spirit to paise God in the joy of the Holy Spirit. Psalms 66, 95, 98, 100 call us to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. We are called to be expressive: lift up your hands (Ps 134:2); clap your hands; shout to God with joybul cries (Ps 47:2). 3) Union Praise/Worship (loving adoration, longing for the presence of God): The Holy Spirit fills our heart with a longing love for God: The love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirirt 9Rom 5:5). Our hearts become rooted in God. This brings a simpler, slower, softer, more repetitive expression of longing for God (Psalms 42, 63, 84), union with God s love (Psalms 118, 136), and abiding in God s presence. We can repeat slowly the names and titles of Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit, or phrases of love and trust (Jesus, I trust in you; Your steadfast love endures forever; My Lord and my God; My God and my all; etc.). The three forms of praise root our whole selves (mind, memory, spirit, body, heart) in God. As we honor God, we become transformed. We are transformed by developing an attitude of praise, which creates a spirit of faith and overcomes negativity. We find ourselves rejoicing in the Lord always and giving thanks in all circumstances (I Thes 5:16-18; Phil 4:4-7). We are transformed by evangelizing ourselves, as we proclaim the good news about the character of God and what he has done. Praise roots the good news more ddply in our hearts and minds: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teachy and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God (Col 3:16). We are transformed by the Spirit being joined to our spirit (Rom 8:16-17, 26-27). We become open to the presence of the Spirit, deep worship, and the manifestations and gifts/charisms of the Spirit. As we proclaim in praise that God is in charge, our spirits become more open to letting the Holy Spirit influence us and empower us with his gifts for ministry. (to be continued in February Charisletter) The Innkeeper Yes, they came to my inn at Bethlehem, and how well I remember the couple; it seems but yesterday. He was a manly sort of a man, the kind that would cause you to look again if you saw him once; kindly and dignified, with a long beard; a strong man with quiet manner. There was something that charmed me about the woman who was with him, one could see that she might soon become a mother. It rather worried me that I didn't have a place for them, but so many had come for the registration, you know. Sanballat, rich merchant, had come down from Damascus; Thaddeus, one of my old customers, had come up from Gaza. A party from Hebron came just at nightfall, and, since I knew them all, I could not turn them away. Joseph told me that he was from Nazareth, up in the hill country of Galilee. He thought, of course, he could have a place to stay. And, as he asked me, he looked toward Mary and knew that I would understand. I did understand, and I tried to think which of the men I could ask to move and make place for the couple. But how could I ask these customers of mine to inconvenience themselves: After all, I did not know Joseph and Mary. I said to myself, O well, somebody will look after them. I must not disturb the others, and it is a beautiful star-lit night. Here, I have it, finally I said to myself, we can make room for them in the manger, and some way they will get along. I have wondered a lot about them since they have gone. I wish now, that I had said to the men in my inn, "We must make a place for this man and this woman from Galilee!" But I didn't, and I am sorry. After all, they might, have been people of consequence. DEC JAN Page 6
