Bob Hogan, BBD, Director of CCCR, will be offering this training session on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm at the Catholic Center for Charismatic Renewal (CCCR). This program will be for anyone who wants to grow in wisdom and strength to live a full and balance approach to living and ministering in the Holy Spirit. In my 48 years in the Renewal I see people who become unbalanced in some aspect of their life in the Spirit. This program will help us to grow in maturity in the Holy Spirit. Topics include: 1) Balancing Prayer life, Ministry, and Family/Community. 2) A Balanced Approach to Prayer Ministry: a. Listening with Compassion and Discernment for Evaluation and Wisdom b. Faith and Evangelization c. Repentance and Forgiveness d. Healing (emotions, memories, thinking) e. Deliverance f. Empowerment with the Holy Spirit g. Ministry under authority and understanding your limits 3) Balancing Service and Holiness. 4) A Balanced Approach to Action and Waiting on the Lord: Serenity Prayer. Bring a sack lunch. 4 Back to the Basics By the grace of God we celebrated the 50th Jubilee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal last year and what a year of celebration it was! Many reading this message right now have been part of the Renewal for nearly the entire 50 years; many are new to the Renewal. With that in mind I am going to be printing some Back to the Basics teachings periodically for those of us who have been around for awhile and for those who are just now experiencing this great relationship with the Holy Spirit. All of us can benefit by taking a step back once in awhile to renew our understanding of some of the basic principles. This first entry is from our Director, Fr. Bob Hogan, BBD, and is entitled, Explaining Catholic Charismatic Renewal. I hope you enjoy! - Dan Dúet, Asst. Director for the CCCR Many people do not have a very clear understanding about the Ecclesial Movement called Catholic Charismatic Renewal, which is an Association of Pontifical Right (has the support of the Pope and is directly under the Vatican) in the Catholic Church. Also, people who are involved in Charismatic Renewal do not always explain this Renewal Movement in a clear way. Here are five basic focuses of Charismatic Renewal. These descriptions can be used to help people understand better the rold of Charismatic Renewal in the Church. 1 - Charismatic Renewal Focuses on the Role of the Holy Spirit in the Church Charismatic Renewal seeks to be a reminder in the Church of the importance of the Holy Spirit. We all need God s divine love, power, wisdom and guidance in our lives, which comes from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit teaches us how to pray; makes us holy; makes scripture and sacraments come alive for us; gives us spiritual gifts to serve; gives us a desire to evangelize; and forms us into the body of Christ. The Scriptures teach us that it is important to learn to let the Holy Spirit be our daily Advocate/Partner. 2 - The Value of Receiving Baptism in the Holy Spirit Pope Benedict XVI said in 2008 on Pentecost: Today I would like to extend this invitation to everyone: Let us rediscover, dear brothers and sisters, the beauty of being baptized in the Holy Spirit; let us be aware again of our baptism and our confirmation, sources of grace that are always present. Let us ask the Virgin Mary to obtain a renewed Pentecost for the Church today, a Pentecost that will spread in everyone the joy of living and witnessing to the Gospel. In the book, Baptism in the Holy Spirit by the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services it says: Baptism in the Spirit is a life-transforming experience of the love of God the Father poured into one s heart by the Holy Spirit, received through a surrender to the lordship of Jesus Christ. It brings alive sacramental baptism and confirmation, deepens communion with God and with fellow Christians, enkindles evangelistic fervor and equips a person with charisms (spiritual gifts) for service and mission. All the popes since the beginnings of Charismatic Renewal in 1967 have affirmed the need for an adult affirmation of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation). Charismatic Renewal calls this the baptism in the Holy Spirit, which is the phrase that is used by John the Baptist and Jesus. Catholic Charismatic Renewal offers Life in the Spirit Seminars that give a person a chance to be prayed with for baptism in the Spirit. The seminar proclaims the basic gospel message of God s love; salvation in the Jesus and becoming his disciple; new life in the Holy Spirit, which explains the role of the Spirit, ongoing growth in the Spirit; and transformation in the Spirit. 3 - The Value of Receiving Charisms (spiritual gifts) for Service and Evangelization Charismatic Renewal prayer groups help their members to receive the spiritual gifts that allow God to work through us. We become manifestations of the Spirit to help build up the body of Christ and demonstrate that Jesus is alive and among us. Charisms (spiritual gifts) allow God to work through us (Continued on next page) September Page 4

5 (continued from previous page) with divine love, power, wisdom, inspiration and guidance. It is not just our own efforts, but God working through us. Jesus said that the harvest is rich but the laborers are few. We need more people who become laborers with God, allowing God to work through them with spiritual gifts, which equip us to do God s work. 4 - The Value of the Prayer of Praise and Worship New people coming to Charismatic Renewal groups may not be used to the expressive style of prayer in our groups. We follow the Psalms in the bible that call us to praise, rejoice, sing, shout, clap, raise our hands, and worship God in prayer. This prayer of praise helps us to grow in union with God, and take on an attitude of praise, and the presence of God, in our lives. The Catechism of the Catholic Church; explains that praise is the form of prayer that recognizes most immediately that God is God. It lauds God for his own sake and gives him glory, quite beyond what he does, but simply because HE IS By praise, the Spirit is joined to our spirits to bear witness that we are children of God Praise embraces the other forms of prayer and carries them toward Him who is its source and goal (God, the Father). (#2639) 5 - The Value of Prayer Group Communities It is good to have faith-renewing experiences like Life in the Spirit Seminars, retreats, A.C.T.S., Cursillo, Parish Missions, etc. However, the bible makes it clear that we grow the most in the Holy Spirit when we are regular participants in some kind of ongoing faith-sharing and prayer group. Catholic Charismatic Renewal in San Antonio has about 50 prayer groups (English and Spanish) that help people to grow as daily disciples of Jesus, led and empowered by the Holy Spirit. We come together for prayer, learning, support, and service of our local parishes and archdiocese. The Catholic Center for Charismatic Renewal supports these efforts with ongoing teaching, leadership training, and renewal events. Much more could be said, but these 5 areas give a basic focus and explanation. I hope this summary helps you in explaining Catholic Charismatic Renewal to other people. A little humor can go a long way... One day a man was praying and God appeared to him. Though he was startled, the man asked, What is a million years like to you?. God responded, Like one second. The man then asked, What is a million dollars like to you?. God answered, Like one penny. Mustering up all his courage the man asked a final question, Can I have a penny? God replied, Sure. Give me a second A Religious Ed teacher was walking around the classroom, observing her kindergarteners while they were drawing pictures. As she got to one girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "Oh don t worry, they will in a minute." Real Bulletin Announcements: A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the parish hall. Music will follow. The topic for next weeks homily will be "What Is Hell?" come early and listen to our choir practice. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. This evening at 7 pm there will be a Hymn Sing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. September Page 5

Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. - II Corinthians 6:2 Saturday, August 18 - at the CCCR - Using the Scripture above and under the watchful eye of OL of Guadalupe, Matt Arizmendez leads the Night of Renewal on behalf of the English Service Committee with the theme: Now is the Time! Following an insightful and challenging presentation, everyone was invited to be individually prayed over by one of the prayer teams. Most remained afterward for fellowship and refreshments in the upstairs kitchen/dining room. Thanks, Matt!!
