3 Page 3 Mary, Queen of Peace Parish November 18, 2018 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This coming week brings us to our nation s observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday on Thursday, November 22 nd, and to this celebration that has such a deep resonance with our Catholic notions of Eucharist giving gratitude. As we approach and prepare for this national day of thanks, I want to express my own gratitude to our parish staff, both pastoral and administrative ministers, to our parish leaders in all areas of the life and mission of MQP, and to all our parish members and households for all you do to prayerfully and generously support our community of faith in everything the Lord Jesus calls to be and to do in worship and prayer, in evangelization and catechesis, in outreach on behalf of justice and charity, in our social life and community building, and in all the spiritual and material needs that we face in carrying out his command to Go out to all the world and tell the Good News. It is a great joy and privilege to serve as the pastor of this parish, and I am deeply grateful for all the ways in which it has blessed my life with so many friends, partners, colleagues and coworkers. A reminder as the Thanksgiving draws near that there will be two opportunities to celebrate Thanksgiving here at MQP this year. First, on Wednesday evening, November 21st, at 6:30pm, MQP will host an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service. Pastors and ministers from the various Christian churches on the Sammamish Plateau will lead the prayers of thanks and praise that we will offer. A simple reception will follow the service, and those who attend are asked to bring something to share for the reception, such as a plate of cookies or brownies, some simple finger foods, or the like. Second, on Thursday morning, November 22nd, at 9:00am, a Thanksgiving Day Mass will be celebrated at MQP for any and all who are able to attend. People are invited to bring to this Mass an item or two from the Thanksgiving Day dinner you plan to serve, and these items will be blessed as a sign of the blessing that extends to the whole of the Thanksgiving feast. Father Bryan Hersey, our Weekend Assistant Priest, will be the principal celebrant and homilist for the Thanksgiving Day Mass, as I will leaving earlier that same morning to fly down to San Jose, California, to spend Thanksgiving, and the week to follow, with my family my father, my siblings and some nieces and nephews. I want to thank Father Bryan for his generous assistance to me, and to the parish, in celebrating not only the Thanksgiving Day Mass at MQP, but also for covering all the Masses on the weekend of November 24 th/25th for the Solemnity of Christ the King. Father Jan Larson will cover the weekday Masses during my absence, and I will be returning to MQP, and resuming my regular duties, on Friday, November 30th. Please know that you will all be in my prayers throughout my time away, and that I eagerly look forward to being with you for the start of the Advent season and the beginning of the new Liturgical Year. Grace and peace to all, Fr. Kevin PRAYER CORNER Please pray for those who are ill: Raymond & Jane Urh, Stephanie Salvaroska, Lydia Engstrom, Bob Marimon, Carmen Manipis, Anna Bero, Tia Jensen, Mike Kaiser. 4 Page 4 Mary, Queen of Peace Parish November 18, 2018 Stewardship of Time, Talent & Treasure GOD Gives It All, Then Calls Us To Share Become Involved In Parish Life, It Is Filled With Blessings Weekly Stewardship Message The reading today speak of the end of the world and the coming of the kingdom. The bishop s pastoral on stewardship says clearly that that life to come is in continuity with this present life through the human goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now. May our good stewardship help us to be numbered among the chosen on the last day! Stewardship of time and talent opportunities within the parish Our parish encourages everyone to give at least two hours of their time each week in prayer and service, beginning with Mass. Whatever gifts you ve been given, be thankful...and find a way to share them. If you have not already done so, please consider doing so this week. Cards were mailed to all households registered in the parish last week and there are cards available in all the pews, or at the welcome table in the vestibule; also available in the vestibule are boxes where you can deposit your pledge card. The commitment of so many of you is truly inspiring. Our hope is to get as close to full parish participation as possible. Should a financial pledge not be possible, please consider turning in a card and simply writing Prayer on the card as your contribution to the drive. Your prayers are a valuable contribution and also add to the total of those who actively participate. If you currently participate in Simplified Giving and wish to increase your contribution, please make note of that on your pledge card. If you would like to continue at your current level, please indicate Renew under the Simplified Giving Portion of your card. These responses will save follow up steps on our part. If you would like to sign-up for Simplified Giving, follow the instructions on the card; if you have any question feel free to call the parish office , ext. 125, and speak to our bookkeeper, Linda Liaw. The process for giving electronically is simple, and there are different options for dates and methods. Stewardship and Employer Matching: If you would like to help maximize your parish giving, please check if your employer has a Matching Gift program. There are several programs that can be matched at the parish by many employers, Microsoft and Boeing being among those. Please contact the parish office with any questions you might have A new Alpha Session will begin in January! What is Alpha? Alpha is not so much a course, but an experience. Each Alpha experience brings together people from every walk of life. Alpha provides an opportunity to meet others and chat about some of life s big questions in an open and friendly environment. Weekly sessions typically include: a meal an intriguing video talk small group discussion Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for everyone and anyone. To date more than 250 parishioners and guests have participated in MQP Alpha. The beauty of Alpha is that there are no questions that are too hostile, too silly or too simple. Alpha has no prerequisites whatsoever. We come together with one another as we are, free to be ourselves. Alpha is for people who enjoy great food, laughter and learning in a fun and non-threatening atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile. Questions: Alpha@mqp.org Stewardship in the Bigger Picture: So many give so much of their time and talent here at MQP. The many programs here take a whole community of volunteers: Outreach, Faith Formation, Social Life, Garden and Grounds, Upkeep of Facilities, Office tasks, all happen at a high level because of the over 1000 people who give of their time. There are many ways that parishioners help without ever being noticed. Thank you all for the many ways you witness your faith!

To sign up for an hour each week or to be a sub adorer please contact: Lorna Richardson at: (425) or lmmrichardson@hotmail.com Every Wednesday we pray for one of our ministries. On November 21st we will be praying for: Funeral Receptions When the Sacred Host is publicly exposed, Jesus is on His Eucharistic throne to receive your adorations, to listen to your confidences, and to console and alleviate your sorrows and trials. When Jesus is offended everywhere, when His royal dignity is mocked and His sovereignty denied, it behooves noble souls to come and acknowledge publicly that He is our beloved Sovereign and divine King, and that to Him all praise, honor, and glory are due. (from The Holy Eucharist, by Jose Guadalupe Trevino.) Sacred Story Do you ever wonder what to pray about? How about everything that s happened to you today. Every encounter, every challenge, every disappointment and every delight of daily life is part of your sacred story. Be not afraid: Fear comes from the enemy of my human nature. Find out more by contacting us at sacredstory@mqp.org Legion of Mary Mary is an object of terror to the powers of hell. She is terrible as an army set in battle array (Song 6:10), for, like a wise Commander, she well knows how to dispose her power, her mercy, and her prayers for the confusion of the enemy and for the benefit of her servants. ~St. Alphonsus Liguori~ The Legion of Mary meets Mondays at 1:30 p.m. downstairs in the library. Please join us as a guest. 10 Page 10 Mary, Queen of Peace Parish November 18, 2018 Dear Mary Queen of Peace - The Mary Queen of Peace helps support 400 households that visit the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank (IFCB) each week. The families that we serve live in the Issaquah School District and come from diverse backgrounds. Our families find themselves needing a little extra help for a variety of reasons: job loss, under -employment, health issues, emergency situations, car accident, temporary or long-term crisis or fixed / limited income. With your efforts and support we help solve food insecurity for our community. In 2017 MQP donated 7,152 pounds of food and 2018 year to date contributions equal 4,184 pounds of food. With an average bag of groceries weighing 15 pounds, MQP has provided 755 bags of groceries in the last year and half. That's food that is directly benefiting our most vulnerable populations. 30% of the people we serve are children and another 30% are senior citizens. Many of our family's are on fixed incomes and struggle in our community to get their basic housing, food and essential needs met. The goal of ending hunger begins with our creative community partnerships like the one the IFCB has with MQP. In addition to contributing food to the IFCB, MQP has helps by donating over 260 bags of clothing every year. When families can shop for gently used clothing and household items on our racks they can save their resources to pay their rent, utilities and to subsidize their food needs. With your support we distributed 292 Easter basket to children who may have otherwise not received one. We know that Easter morning for the families you support is going to be filled with joy, as children get to search for Easter baskets that were thoughtfully made for them with love. Thank you for continually doing your part to make life better for families in need.
