In fact, it is a biblical phone: it observes Sabbath. If I haven t reset it recently, I get a message You haven t reset your phone in 7 days. Even my phone knows it needs a reset now and then, and I only expect it to last a few years. You and I need a reset every so often, too. Many people choose the new year as a time to start something, stop something, change something. So, like Dr. Phil asks, How s that working for you? We are starting a series in January 2019 called Reboot. Because like our electronic devices, we all need a new start now and then. For Reboot, we ll be taking a fresh look- P lan to Move Forward Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control. Galatians reminds us that, there is no law against things like these. But that doesn t make them easy. Want to reboot? Could your life use a bit more Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Selfcontrol? Join us on Sundays in the new year as we take time to Reboot! 2 P a g e 2 C h u r c h M a t t e r s I Wi ll... Pastor Steve always leaves his kids, Eliza and Liam, by telling them, Make good choices. They always respond, I will. Whether they do or not is debatable, but they still try. We too at Euless First are working hard to make good choices as we move forward to where God is calling us. We are looking at all of the ministries of Euless First, as well as the leadership, structure and our dreams for the future, and are attempting to make good choices, but know we have to be open to saying I Will. We are challenging all of Euless First United Methodist Church to take the time in 2019 to see when you will say I Will. Find something new you have never done before, or find something you have only thought of doing, and dive in. Say, I Will. to God, to Euless First, and to our future! Look for more info in the coming year for I will events! From the Pa s tor Winston Churchill once said that We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us. How s your vision? I don t so much mean your physical vision. I mean, how s your vision for what God will do with our future? As we start in 2019, as a Church, we are standing at a very significant place. We look back on years, decades, more than a century, of worship and fellowship and study and service all based on the same site. But by the end of this year, we will be able to see, physically see, the new space that will serve as our base in the future. Maybe for the next 142+ years! Winston Churchill once said that We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us. The buildings we will occupy for the next 2 years have shaped the way we worship, the way we fellowship, the way we serve. Some of this shaping has been good and helpful, some of it has actually hindered ministry and growth. Within less than 2 years, though, we will be in a new building, which will be shaped differently. This means our ministry, our worship, our fellowship, and our service will all be shaped differently than they are now. To try to transfer precisely who we are and exactly what we do now, from this building to a new building, would not be faithful to the ways God offers to lead us. Since these exciting new times are just ahead of us, I want to invite you to join me in a goal I have set for myself for the year I am going to do something different. I might sing in the choir one week. Maybe I ll spend a month in a different Sunday School Class; perhaps I ll even offer to teach a children s Sunday School Class for a week. The possibilities are almost limitless! Will you join me? Will you try something new and different for you in the life of our church this year?

3 V o l u m e 8, I s s u e 1 P a g e 3 E uless Kids A new year, and a new beginning. At least that is what a lot of people believe. We tend to forget that we can start fresh and new with Jesus at any point in our lives, not just the new year or Monday morning. Healing especially can begin at any time of the year. During January the kids will be learning about Jesus and some of the many people he physically and emotionally healed. I recently have learned a Student Ministries lot about healing, although I think the more important lesson I am still working on is patience! Healing can take more time than we initially imagined or hoped for. The Christmas season sometimes leaves us feeling broken, in need of healing, and patience. When getting caught up in the hustle and bustle, we can get lost and hurt. But God heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds (Psalm 147:3 CEB), which is the primary scripture for this month. Also this month, we will still be working on our mission projects of letter writing and bracelet making for the students in Belize. I love how the kids have embraced this project and worked so diligently on it. We will soon have a gathering to make sure we have enough for all the students. Be on the lookout for details! -Jamie Nalley, Director of Children s Ministry Before anything else, let us say a big "thank you" for your support of our Christmas Project that helped provide Christmas for local high school students who fall through the cracks of other Christmas programs - your generosity helped 15 students in need! Thank you! We can't predict what weather January will bring, but we know it brings excellent Chili, Soup, and Cornbread! We're issuing a call for entries in the annual Chili, Soup, & Cornbread Cook-off fundraiser to support the E1ement Students in 2019 on Sunday, January 27th. It s a great time to eat, fellowship, and aid our student ministry's activities financially - including CTCYM each summer. Each one is worth $.10, and dimes add up quickly to dollars! Thank you for supporting us in this endeavor. Online Giving Link Adapted, - from Rev. Anne Lau Choy, Saint Paul United Methodist Church, Fremont, Calif. People tend to think stewardship is about money. Stewardship, however, is fundamentally about what we do with what we have. It is about what we love because what matters to us is how we spend our resources, time and skills. It is essentially about love, and love begins with God s love. The doxology is what we sing when we give our offering to God. We praise God from whom all blessings flow. We give God thanks for all that is and all that God has created. Our offering is a response to that gratefulness. One doxology moment, during our capital campaign last year, before we collected our total pledges, we heard faithful testimonies, and people stepped up to serve, care, worship and offer generosity. Clearly, God was doing amazing things, and we were grateful for the opportunity to be part of it. In Exodus, we see how the people gave their riches to build God s sanctuary. In Exodus 36, the skillful ones who were building the sanctuary came to the priests to tell them that the people were bringing too much and to tell them to stop. They already had enough for what they were instructed by God to do. Can you imagine that people would need to be told to stop giving? Why would they give so much and be so generous? I think it is out of overwhelming gratefulness to God. When have you been overwhelmed with gratefulness for God? Remember how you felt and what you did because of it. How is the Holy Spirit nudging you to share God s love generously with others? Take time prayerfully to consider how God is calling you to give and build God s kingdom, doing what matters to God. In that reality of God s love for you, consider how God is calling you to act in gratefulness. How will you use the resources you have now to build God s kingdom?

6 P a g e 6 C h u r c h M a t t e r s L eadersh ip is a fresh start for Euless First United Methodist Church. We are excited about all the possibilities and the path forward. God has called us to share our mission to follow Jesus a bit better today than yesterday, and we are continually looking for the best way to move forward. We have several ways that we are working toward this in First, Euless Leadership will be starting the year with an orientation session on January 6th. This orientation will be for all leadership. We will have time to go over the structure and the responsibilities of each committee. The Orientation will be at 12:00 p.m. and lunch will be served. Second, we will have a retreat for all leadership on Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12. This will be a time when we will review our mission and finalize a vision statement. This will help us define 2019 and our goal for it. Finally, we will be holding another book study for all leadership. In fact, anyone is welcome to join us. We will be studying Multiply Your Impact: Making the Leap from Church Maintenance to Gospel Movement by Paul Nixon and Christine Latona. Look for more information coming soon. We have provided a list of all leadership (currently finalized) for the coming year. Please pray for these leaders and for our next steps! 7 V o l u m e 8, I s s u e 1 P a g e 7 T h e United Methodist Ch u r ch in 2019 Big things are happening in the United Methodist Church in 2019! If you have not already heard, there is a called General Conference in February to make a decision about statements of sexuality and LGBTQ issues in the United Methodist Church. The Committee on Reference will meet in advance of the 2019 Special Session of the General Conference to determine whether petitions submitted by organizations and individuals are in harmony with the call to the special session. The meeting will take place January in Irving, Texas. Please continue to be in prayer about this entire process. If you would like to read the different proposals that the called conference will vote on, please visit general-conference special-session. D i s c i pleship Jo u r ney Euless First will be presenting an expanded Discipleship Journey small-group study program this Winter to help persons follow Jesus together a bit better today than yesterday. We understand that our journey with Christ is one that takes action to learn more. Registration is available on the connection card of the bulletin as well as online. Here is what we are offering in regards to short-term studies soon. Slightly Bad Girls of th e Bibl e Good women behaving badly: a spiteful boss, a defiant employee, a manipulative mother, a desperate housewife, an envious sister...honey, we know these women. We've lived with them, worked with them, or caught a glimpse of them in our mirrors. Now let's take a look at their ancient counterparts in Scripture: Sarah mistreated her maidservant, Hagar despised her mistress, Rebekah manipulated her son, Leah claimed her sister's husband, and Rachel envied her fertile sister. They were far from evil, but hardly perfect. Mostly good, yet slightly bad. In other words, these matriarchal mamas look a lot like us. Join Pastor Rachel and Jo Tarrh in a fun study to look at these women of scripture and see the parallels in our own lives. This study is 8 sessions, costs $10 and will begin January 13, 2019 at 5:15 in the Swor Parlor.
