2 WELCOME! Thank you for sharing in our journey during this Holy Year of Mercy December 10, 2015 to November 30, 2016 PLEASE, VISIT US AGAIN SOON! WHAT KIND OF PARISH DO WE WANT TO BE? For all the years that I have been going to the Berkshires in search of a peaceful pause, there was one place that I had been meaning to go to but never seemed to get to. As I began to cross the street after parking my car, I looked down and saw written on the pavement the words You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant and an arrow pointing the way. After years of journeying, the white, wooden tower of the Old Trinity Church, which once was Alice s home and is now the Guthrie Center, rose before me over the leafy treetops billowing in the warm summer breeze. What caught my eye first, was a van with a long table with various beverages from water to lemonade in front of it. A banner welcomed bicyclists to stop for refreshment. And they did, including a couple with a dog carrier on one bike from which a golden retriever disembarked (pun intended). The dog eagerly received a dog biscuit from a volunteer host and scampered across the lawn in front of the church turned local and international community outreach center as well as museum to Woodie and Arlo Guthrie then proceeded to lie down and find solace in the shade. Taking in the dog relaxing, bicyclists taking in liquid refreshment, folks eating plates of food from the free weekly community meal, and other folks either chatting, reading books, or just stretched out catnapping on the lawn, the words of Isaiah 55:1 all who are thirsty, come to the water! came to my mind. Though a stranger, I felt a real sense of community as locals and tourists interacted joyfully with each other. I felt completely welcome, a sense of inner peace, and felt the presence of the Holy Spirit at work in this place. It was a place that though housed in a traditional looking old New England church building lacked aloofness, rigidity, pretense, and fear of moving forward so often found in most places of worship across the spectrum of faiths and denominations. After over 2 hours of engaging with other folks and soaking in the experience, I finally walked back to my car and drove away filled, wanting only in the sense that I wished wrap up the essence of this place of welcome, prayer, and service to other in a to-go box and bring it home to our city. 3 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time As we, the members of St. Adalbert Parish, prayerfully discern: the future mission of our parish the way that each member of the parish can use their individual gifts to serve that mission the best use(s) of our parish properties to serve that mission we call on Saints Joachim and Anne to pray with us, and intercede for us before their grandson, Jesus St. Joachim and Anne, pray for us! HARVEST FESTIVAL Sunday, October 16, 2016 VOLUNTEERS To make this years Festival a success volunteers and donations are required. Signup sheets are located in the gathering area of the church. GRANDMA S ATTIC Donations for Granny s Attic and collectables can be dropped off at the Parish House during office hours. Items must be clean and useable. BAKED GOODS We need pies, cakes, breads, cookies, cupcakes, Chrusciki, Babka, bread, and other baked goods. In a few weeks, we will post the times you can bring donations down to the parish center and instructions on how to package your product. HARVEST OF GOLD DRAWING This year, a portion of the drawing proceeds will be used to convert the living roomdining room in the Parish House into a multipurpose Parish Community Room. A very special 1st Prize is being added this year. Books of drawing tickets will be mailed to parish families at the beginning of September. August 14, 2016 BIRTHRIGHT of SCHENECTADY Current Needs: diapers sizes 4 & 5 gently used, clean clothing Newborn to 5T. There is special need for boys clothes in all sizes donations of diapers may be placed by the crib in the gathering area of our worship space. WORKS OF MERCY GOOD NEIGHBOR PROGRAM The Good Neighbor Program provides clothing care packages to local schoolaged children in need. Current Needs: special need for junior girls size 315, ladies size 4 16 pants, small to extra large tops gently used or new boys & girls clothing all sizes. new socks and underwear special need for ladies sizes donation boxes are in the church s gathering area We need your help to sign up at least 10 additional advertisers to be able to continue bringing the weekly parish bulletin to you without any cost to the parish. Encourage local businesses and service organizations that you patronize or are associated with to become an advertiser in the St. Adalbert Parish weekly bulletin.
