1 ST. ADALBERT Roman Catholic Parish 550 Lansing Street * Schenectady, NY * (518) July 17, 2016 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Brightly beams our Father s mercy from His lighthouse evermore! To us He gives the keeping of the lights upon the shore. Our Parish and God s Mercy Have No Borders All Are Welcome Here Join us for Mass at the Lord s Table Saturday 4:00 P.M. Sunday 9:00 A.M. or 10:30 A.M.!
2 WELCOME! Thank you for sharing in our journey during this Holy Year of Mercy December 10, 2015 to November 30, 2016 PLEASE, VISIT US AGAIN SOON! Taking a New Look at the Story of Martha and Mary Once one knows that the Bethany home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus was not only the inn where the unclean, outcast, poor, and oppressed folks in society during Jesus time on earth found respite and mercy but also the place where Jesus chose to take his day off from his public ministry than the Gospel account of the too busy Martha in the kitchen and the dutifully attentive Mary at the feet of Jesus can be seen from a new perspective. We can take away an important lesson to guide us in our relationships with others and in how we minister as disciples of Jesus. Jesus message is NOT - as many homilists suggest - that Martha was doing something bad. In fact, Martha was performing necessary Corporal Works of Mercy, and must have had a good spiritual life since she (not one of the Twelve Apostles) was the first person in the Gospel to get it - that through Jesus folks had sure and certain hope in sharing in a new life with Jesus after death. She arrived at this understanding BEFORE the events of Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter. The Apostles would not get it until sometime AFTER the Resurrection. So what then was Jesus message for Martha, then, and us, today? It is simply this: that the preparation, task-doing, and hands-on work was a PART of Ministry. Indeed, a necessary part of ministry. Folks don t get fed, healed, sheltered, clothed, etc. without some labor being done. The better part is actually being with - spending time with - actively listening to - and developing a relationship with the person to whom one is ministering - actually ministering to/serving one another. It isn t just writing the check, cooking the meal, donating the clothes, etc. that help others. One needs to actually come face-to-face with and develop a relationship with others - allowing oneself to be both serve/give and be served/receive. Martha and Mary were both ministering to Jesus. Making him feel welcome and at ease in their home. The difference is that while Martha was doing things FOR Jesus, Mary was being WITH Jesus. Trying to find the right balance of doing for and being with is a challenge. But it is something that we need to keep working at every day. EVERY MONTH IS "NATIONAL SOCIAL SECURITY ONLINE" MONTH Please pray for the Resurrection unto eternal life of Wanda Hunt We Welcome New Parishioners Contact the parish office to register. Current Parishioners Take Note Does the office have your most up to date contact info? Home phone, cell phone, address, etc. Checking to make sure it is up to date and keeping the parish office informed of any changes would be most helpful. We need everyone to give something. Learn more about what your contribution does to bring God s Mercy to so many in our diocese STAY CONNECTED WITH THE CHURCH OF ST. ADALBERT Parish Website Parish Bulletin Online Go to: Type in: Church of St. Adalbert and Schenectady, NY in the boxes Click on Latest Bulletin Have you ever stopped to appreciate the many celebrations we enjoy in this country? For example, did you know that July is National Baked Beans Month? It's also National Hot Dog Month. If beans and hot dogs are not on your diet, that's okay--it's also National Blueberry Month! July also happens to be National Ice Cream Month--something almost as American as apple pie (National Apple Pie Month was in May). As you're marking your calendar to keep all of these festivities in mind, we want to make sure you're aware that every month can be National Social Security Online Month! As you're taking all of these commemorative foods out on a picnic (July is also National Picnic Month), take your laptop or tablet with you so you can visit Whether you want to see what's new at Social Security with our news section, find an answer to a question with our frequently asked questions section, or plan for your retirement with our "Retirement Estimator" or "Benefits Planners," you can do it all easily at our Web site. Make a part of your recreation (July is National Recreation Month). Visit our History page to learn all about the history and early days of Social Security. Resting on a blanket under a tree is a fun way to spend a picnic, but if that begins to get boring (July is National Anti- Boredom Month), you'll want to tune into some of our fun public service announcements featuring Patty Duke, George Takei, Chubby Checker, and Don Francisco at If you're feeling ambitious and ready to retire, you may even decide to apply online for benefits as you're enjoying your baked beans and ice cream. You can apply easily in as little as 15 minutes. Patty Duke and George Takei will tell you all about it in the online videos. If you go to our home page, you'll find our most popular services listed on the left-hand side of the page. These include getting or replacing a Social Security card, applying for retirement or disability benefits, applying for Medicare, and getting "Extra Help" with Medicare prescription drug costs. There is so much you can do at Social Security's Web site you may find yourself celebrating National Social Security Online Month throughout the year.
