3 SUMMER SERVICE REVIEW Olivia Ball, Nolan Tiani, and Caitlin Canavan, first- me summer service trip par cipants shared their reflec ons on the 2018 trip to Worcester at the end of Masses last weekend. In addi on, at the 11AM Mass Mary Dunphy shared her thoughts about being a chaperone. Olivia reflected that Through them [the leaders at their worksite], we were able to learn the value of hard work and what it mean to really put in all your effort towards a good cause. Father Fred and Chris never once took anything for granted or doubted their faith and that message will stay with us everyday for the rest of our lives. Nolan shared that he wanted to back out of the trip when two of his friends were unable to a end due to a family situa on. But, in the end though the work was tough [his group dug a trench for a founda on for a new two story building that would be low income housing] the best decision he made was to s ck it out and go on the trip. Caitlin, who worked at a day camp for underprivileged children, shared that she never did babysi ng because she didn t think she was good with children but through her site work she discovered that she was not only good with children but that she liked it! She taught many of the children how to make friendship bracelets and that was a great thing to leave the students with, though it was really hard to leave at the end of the week. Mary Dunphy, who has gone on 9 service trips shared the gi of seeing the students challenged, frustrated, red while growing and discovering their own gi s. Once again, it was a great trip and we are grateful to be part of this generous parish. Thank you. ABOUT CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Why do we celebrate Cateche cal Sunday? In 1935, the Va can published On the Be er Care and Promo on of Cateche cal Educa on, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church s teaching ministry and to honor those who serve the Chris an community as catechists. For the first few years a er Cateche cal Sunday was established, na onal cateche cal congresses were held in conjunc on with the celebra on. Beginning in 1971, the USCCB s Department of Educa on began producing materials to help parishes celebrate the event at the local level. When the Commi ee on Catechesis, now named the Commi ee of Evangeliza on and Catechesis, was named by the Conference as a standing Commi ee, it con nued to publish Cateche cal Sunday materials each year. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the third Sunday in September as Cateche cal Sunday. What Does the Word Cateche cal Mean? The word might be more familiar than you think. Many Catholics have used the word "catechism" for years, and they know it has something to do with the compendium of the Church's teachings. The root word, "catechesis," is from a Greek word meaning "to echo, or resound." Catechesis is the act of resounding or bringing the Church's teachings to the world. A catechist is one who teaches in the name of the Church. Why do we have a special day set aside to commission catechists? Catechesis is a dis nct and special ministry in the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, Catechesis is in mately bound up with the whole of the Church s life... her inner growth and correspondence with God s plan depend essen ally on catechesis (no. 7). This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fi ng that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the en re church community to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others. How are parents, the primary catechists of their children, recognized on Cateche cal Sunday? Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Cateche cal Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next genera on. This is why the rite of blessing of catechists used on Cateche cal Sunday includes an op onal blessing of parents and guardians. September 16, 2018 Page 3

4 R ELIGIOUS E DUCATION N EWS R G! It is very important that the Religious Educa on office have updated registra on forms from every family each year. These forms may be found on our Religious Educa on page. Also hard copies are available at the Parish Office and in the gathering space at the church. Registra on is not complete un l all forms and payment (in full or par al) are received. If payment is a hardship, PLEASE contact Cathy Bowes. No child will be excluded from the program because of money. To receive a tui on discount or waiver, you can reach Cathy at All conversa ons will be kept confiden al. We encourage you to pay online using WeShare. Simply go to stmaryhull.weshareonline.org! Monday: Grade 8: 4:00-5:00pm Grades 6 & 7: 5:15-6:15pm Tuesday: Grade 3: 4:30-5:30pm Grades 4 & 5: 5:45-6:45pm N C S If a scheduling conflict exist for your family this year, please contact Cathy Bowes to discuss other op ons. T N Wednesday: Grade 2: 4:30-5:30pm Thursday: Grade 1: 4:30-5:30pm Friday: Grade 5: 3:45-4:45pm As always, I will need teachers for the program. If volunteering to teach or co-teach is something you think you might enjoy or feel called to do, please let Cathy Bowes know. It is a wonderful way to grow in faith, serve the parish, and touch the lives of young people. What has worked well in the past, is to co-teach with another adult, this can lessen the me commitment for both volunteers. Parents or grandparents who volunteer as teachers will receive free tui on for one child. T. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN: VIRTUS TRAINING There is an Archdiocesan policy requiring all staff and ministry volunteers a end a training called Protec ng God s Children which is administered by the Catholic Risk Reten on Group under an umbrella called VIRTUS. Although this program was created in the wake of the sex abuse scandal, the reality is that children are abused every day by any number of categories of people. This program educates the par cipants on the subject of sex abuse, warning signs we should all be aware of, safety precau ons we should take whether here at church, in our neighborhoods, or even in our own homes and steps to take when we need/want to communicate concerns. It is not an easy topic for discussion but it is one that needs to happen if we are to truly consider our parish home a safe place for children. We will offer 2 training sessions: Thursday, October 7:00PM OR Wednesday, October 7:00PM (RSVP by 10/01/2018) If you are a volunteer in a ministry that is visible to the children- such as lector, Eucharis c minister, music or bell choir, Sunday morning donuts and coffee, teacher and you have not par cipated in one of these sessions in the past, then you are required to a end. We realize this is an extra commitment in your busy lives, but policy aside, we believe this is important informa on that will help us keep our children safe and keeping children safe should be a priority in all our lives. Thank you in advance for being open to par cipa ng in this program. Please RSVP to Cathy Bowes by 10/01/2018 with the class you would like to a end.
