3 SOCIAL JUSTICE DUFRESNEY HAITI FOUNDATION AND ME Mortell, Doreen Trahon, and Tom Burns inspired me to join the Dufresnay Hai Foundaon aer last year's fundraiser. Rob Aer our January nor easter I le my flooded home in the bleak darkness of the coldest day of the year, my windows so iced up I couldn't see if Doreen's car was outside. By midaernoon, we were at the Port au Prince airport sweltering in the back seat of a truck, waing for Tom. Driving through the capital city is a sobering educaon with its scenes of distressing poverty and traffic snarls of insane proporons. The paved road eventually gives way to a limestone track wending its way to Dufresnay, a land of intense greenery, outstandingly beauful mountains, and the home of the amazing people who live in the Haian countryside. My husband David and I had been learning Haian Creole. He is a teacher at the Vassal Lane Upper School in Cambridge which has a sheltered English immersion program. David is beginning to converse with his Hai- an students and school staff, many who come to this country having no prior knowledge of English. We thought it would be great to learn the Rosary in Creole and teach it to the children at the orphanage. I brought 50 of Gloria Mooney s colorful homemade rosaries. We prayed together on the anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake that rocked Hai in You could see the gravity of the day in the faces of our Haian friends. It was humbling to pray in the company of Our Lady and the girls le motherless and fatherless by the earthquake. It is grafying to know that they are fed, sheltered, and loved by the people who donate to the Dufresnay Hai Foundaon. I told the girls that we are a family united by the love of God and that the people of St. Ann's in Hull would be praying for them. I asked them to pray for us. My other passion is combining the love of birds and nature with educa- on. I had brought along some field cards showing the most common of Haian birds with the names wrien in English, French, and Creole. It was a blast learning the bird calls from one of the local kids who could imitate I brought 50 of Gloria Mooney s colorful homemade rosaries. I wanted to excite the children by showing them endemics, birds that belong to their island, and nowhere else in the world. Can you say Jako, Perich, or my favorite, Tako? (Hispaniolan Lizard Cuckoo). I'm designing a children's nature field guide for our next trip. Helen Cross SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING VESPERS -SUNDAY, MAY 20TH 4:00PM Vespers (Evening Prayer) Vespers, also called Evening Prayer, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office. In the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church fulfills Jesus' command to "pray always" (Luke 18:1; see also 1 Thessalonians 5:17). Through this prayer, the people of God sancfy the day by connual praise of God and prayers of intercession for the needs of the world. The Liturgy of the Hours includes several specified mes of prayer. The most important mes, called the "hinge hours," are Morning Prayer (which takes place upon rising) and Evening Prayer (which takes place as dusk begins to fall). The other hours are the Office of Readings (a service with a biblical reading and a reading from the Fathers or Church writers or a reading related to a saint which may take place at any me of day), a Dayme Prayer (which may take place at Midmorning, Midday, or Midaernoon), and Night Prayer (said before going to sleep). Bishops, priests, deacons, and many men and women in consecrated life pray the Liturgy of the Hours each day. Their work is organized around this prayer, keeping God always at the center of their days. Lay people are encouraged to pray the Liturgy of the Hours as well, especially Morning and Evening Prayer. Many parishes in the United States schedule communal Morning and Evening Prayer on a regular basis. Evening Prayer gives thanks for the day just past and makes an evening sacrifice of praise to God (see Psalm 141:1). April 15, 2018 Page 3

On Monday, April 23, a naturalist from the Blue Hills Trailside Museum will be in the Saint Jerome School gym to present two excing animal programs for our youngest learners. Children will compare an animal's senses to their own and discover how animals use their senses to survive. This engaging program will include an interacve story, touchable natural arfacts, and a chance to meet a live animal! All current Saint Jerome School K0, K1, and K2 students will parcipate in this fun, inhouse field trip along with any new families who are considering enrollment for their children aged 4, 5, and 6. The show for all 3 year olds will be at 9:30 am and the program for 4 and 5 year olds will be at 10:30 am. Seang is limited. ANTHONY S, COHASSET Tuesday, April 24th 7:00pm St. Anthony s Parish, in collaboration with St. Mary s Parish (Hull), is sponsoring a Healing Mass for all who are seeking healing for themselves or loved ones... whether the desired healing is physical, emotional or spiritual. During the Mass, the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be administered to those who are sick or facing surgery or a major medical procedure.
