One way Deacon Doyle responded to the call of our church was to simply ask those who could afford it to donate $8.00 for blanket for someone who had none. He likely had no idea the impact that simple ask would have on donors and on receivers - nor that it would continue well past his time here. This month your simple contribution will go to My Brother s Keeper to purchase blankets for those who have none. My Brother s Keeper is a vibrant, welcoming Christian ministry with locations in Easton and Dartmouth, MA which delivers furniture and food to families in need. Their mission is "To bring the Love and Hope of Jesus Christ to those we serve. The English Cursillo Weekends for the Archdiocese are being held at the Campion Center, Weston, Massachusetts. 3 DUFRESNAY HAITI FOUNDATION 2017 TRIP VIDEO Dufresnay Haiti Foundation will be showing a video in the gathering space after all Masses on the weekend of February 11/12th of our latest trip to Haiti in January Some of the things we accomplished are: We repaired 1 house that had been damaged by Hurricane Matthew. We provided medical care for an at-risk 16 year old mother who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl Emily (named after one of our volunteers). Most certainly a miracle of God. We took 37 Saint Rock orphans to a day at the beach with a pizza party. None of these children had ever been in the ocean. These are just a sampling of the many things we do with the money that is generously donated to us. We sincerely appreciate and thank you for all of your support. 4 NOTES FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR - JOE SCOLASTICO Our offertory hymn this week is a setting of a poem by St. Theresa of Avila. St. Theresa was from Avila, Spain, and was the founder of the Disclaced Carmelites. Her main work involved the reform of religious life at the time of the Reformation which had become less prayerful and more worldly. At the time, many disagreed with her, in fact, some thought her visions were from the devil. But she persevered. In 1970, Pope Paul VI made her a "doctor" (one who has made major, authoritative contributions to the faith) of the Church, for her contributions to prayer life. She along with St. Catherine of Sienna were the first women saints to be given such a title (Pope Benedict XVI later named another female doctor of the Church, St. Hildegard of Bingen). She is the patron saint of Spain. In the poem, St. Theresa points out that although we ourselves are not Christ, we are the ones who should carry out his work and mission. Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours. Social Justice The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most I need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty. - Pope Francis Wikipedia defines social justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities and privileges within a society. The term social justice was coined by a Jesuit priest, Luigi Taparelli D Azeglio in the 1850 s when he was writing articles to combat the problems arising from the Industrial Revolution such as housing, fair wages, and child welfare. The issues equated with social justice are not much different today and possibly even more numerous and affecting more people. How do we discern what we need to do to respond to the injustices in the world? As Catholic people we have the guidance of the Church s social teachings a rich treasure for building a just society. There are seven themes that are the heart of our tradition (for more information: uscb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/cathoic-social-teaching ) As we strive to be that great society that the Pope spoke about, our own parish movement through the social justice ministry calls each one of us to activism and volunteerism, it provides each of us the opportunity to find a passion for justice, and it invites each of us to respond to the needs of the oppressed and the struggling. Pope Francis emphasis on the plight of the poor and marginalized has brought new energy to the work of service and social justice. He reminds us: Jesus tells us what the protocol is, on which we will be judged. It is the one we read in Chapter 25 of Matthew s Gospel: I was hungry, I was thirsty, I was in prison, I was naked and you helped me, clothed me, visited me, and took care of me. Whenever we do this to one of our brothers, we do this to Jesus. Caring for our neighbor- for those who are poor, who suffer in body and in soul, for those who are in need. This is the touchstone. Through our Social Justice Ministry the opportunity exists to be the servant we are all called to be through our Baptism, through the teachings and the life of Jesus Christ, and through the teachings of the Catholic Church. By focusing on one need each month you have the opportunity to prayerfully and thoughtfully respond. Donating because you believe in the mission or just giving what s in your pocket is the difference between living your faith and passing by the table. Our next cause will be Dufresne, Haiti which we will be in the Social Justice Corner throughout Lent. Please be sure to stop by the table and prayerfully and thoughtfully donate to this important global concern. Upcoming Events Glastonbury Abbey SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM: 4- week program starting on Tuesday, February 7 th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Morcone Center, Music in the Pews.and You! Join Br. David for an informative and fun-filled series as he presents how the development of music in the Christian church came to express an ancient tradition. These four sessions will cover earliest musical history, how music came to be written down, what those odd symbols mean and how to find your voice in this wondrous tradition. Don t be afraid. FAITH AND FILM: Thursday, February 9 th at 6:30 p.m. A Late Quartet (2012), R, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, and Catherine Keener. Members of a world-renowned string quartet struggle to stay together in the face of death, competing egos and insuppressible lust. Movie starts at 6:30 p.m., with discussion afterward. Come early with friends and bring a sandwich! Tea, coffee and snacks will be served. No registration required. Donations gratefully accepted. WEEKEND RETREAT: February th, FEAR Face Everything and Recover, with Abbot Thomas. Our life isn t always a walk in the park. We have periods of regret, sorrow, hope and joy which make our life, our life. Fear is the emotion that prevents us from moving forward psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. Fear imprisons us and keeps us from celebrating and living to our full potential. This retreat will allow us to examine our fear and shed light on how it prevents us from achieving who God calls us to be. This is the time to walk across the threshold to a new freedom from fear, leading us to a new life in Christ. Suggested Offering: $190, includes 2-nights accommodation and meals. 5 Wellspring s Drowned Hogs Event Last Saturday, Deacon Jim, his daughter Jennie and Jennie s daughter Josie (not pictured) took the ice cold plunge into the water at the 22nd Annual Wellspring Drowned Hog event, and came out smiling! All for a great cause! Thank you Jim, Jennie & Josie! RENEW RETURNS! A time of reflection, prayer and conversion. Renew Yourself This Lent With... When: How: What/Where: Starts the week of March 6th and runs for 6 weeks, meeting once per week Sign-Up Saturday/Sunday after Masses, weekend of 2/12 & 2/19 Small faith sharing communities in homes of fellow parishioners. We have offered several Renew programs over the years Healing the Body of Christ, Renew, Arise all of them were offered through the materials of the Renew International organization. Many hundreds of people in our parish have been engaged in small group faith sharing throughout the three programs and many new and lasting friendships were formed and enriched by this faith sharing experience as demonstrated by the following quote of a past participant: ticipant to determine an action they want to implement in the upcoming week (and this is something they can tell others they will do or silently commit to.) It is hard to try to explain in print how transformative these evenings can be, though we hope reading the quote within may help. But it is safe to say that for many, Renew truly renewed their hearts and minds. And most importantly as individuals grow stronger, the group and by extension the parish, also grows. Participating in previous Renew programs at St. Mary s was one of the best and significant experiences in my faith journey. The small group setting is the perfect place to reflect, discuss and challenge myself to think about how God is present and an integral part of my life. I m also very thankful for the opportunity it gave me to personally meet and form bonds with my fellow parishioners whom I would not otherwise have gotten to know. The discussions were faith filled, important, relevant and open. While we encourage fasting during Lent from good things of this world to help us desire the better things of the next this Lent, feast on prayer, friendship, and positive action through a small faith sharing community. Your Easter joy will be enhanced for having this experience. The program brings people together in homes, much like the early Christians, creating small faith sharing communities. A leader will guide the evening though every participant will have an accompanying book. There will be prayer, readings from sacred scripture, reflections to be read, and then sharing among participants.
