1 RidgeVIEWS Volume 14, Issue 6 June 2014 The monthly newsletter of Ridgeview Mennonite Church As persons who attend Ridgeview Mennonite Church, we believe that God will guide us in discernment--individually and corporately. We expect and submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit among us. Our relationship with God and each other, and our awareness of the presence of the gifts and the fruits of the spirit, our practice of prayer, our love of the faith community, and our faith in God, empower us to listen for the voice of God to guide us in the discernment process. A paragraph similar to the one above is present in written form each time we come to the discernment table for leadership positions at Ridgeview, and so it should be. As people who affirm and proclaim the presence of the Holy Spirit as active in the world and our own lives it is right for us to acknowledge such in our decision making processes. This year the Ministry Team is asking the Ridgeview body to engage one another and the Spirit at an earlier point in this course of leadership discernment as we seek God s guidance for the Lay Minister positions in Administration and Community Life. To accomplish such discernment we are asking each Sunday school class to work together to discern one name for each position to be presented as nominees. June 8, 2014 is Pentecost Sunday, the day when we remember the wondrous and world changing event of the Spirit being poured out onto humanity. It is on this day that we will ask your Sunday school class to spend some time in prayer and discernment to generate these nominees. We are also asking that each class select a representative who will participate in further discernment with the nominees at a later date. Those not present or who do not attend Christian Education hour will still have an opportunity to submit names as well. We would also encourage you as class to invite others into your discernment time if appropriate. What follows are brief descriptions of these two Lay Minister positions for your consideration. Lay Minister of Administration: Purpose/Mission--To provide a link between ministry functions: carry out the administrative aspects of congregational life, carry out legal responsibilities of Ridgeview Mennonite Church, and relieve Ministry Team of administrative responsibilities. *Meets regularly with Ministry Team *Will serve as congregational chairperson and preside over congregational meetings *Will work with the Pastor(s) and Ministry Team in planning congregational meetings *Provides leadership to the Administration Commission who meet monthly Lay Minister of Community Life: Purpose/Mission--To provide oversight for community life and mutual care of the congregation and its neighborhood *Meets regularly with Ministry Team *Meets with commission members monthly or as needed *Will help coordinate activities that build community within our church family and also to our surrounding community *Will keep contact with those within community life structure *Attend meetings of Caring Team when appropriate *Will keep in touch with coordinator and prayer advocate Please be in prayer for this time of discernment in the weeks ahead. More information will be available the morning of June 8 for the Sunday school class time. Thank you for the energy and time you will give to this. REMINDER...June 22 through August 31, 9:00 AM Worship; 10:15 AM Christian Education
2 ALIVE WITH 55 Lisa High of Pequea Valley Library took us on a delightful journey of various hats, covering a century, from the 1860's through the 1960's. Starting with men's and ladies' top hats from the 1860's to Jackie Kennedy's 1960's pill box, Lisa talked of American history and showed us a variety of hat styles as they were popular in each decade. Some of the styles were the Homburg of the early 1900's, the Fedora, the Bowler, the Cloche of the 1920's, and the Grace (Kelly) of the 1950's. How interesting to note hat fashions as they changed through the years. We were encouraged to wear or bring a favorite hat or one with a story. A variety of hats were worn and stories shared with the group. May 13 our own Julie Sommers will share the story of her life, and the path it has taken her. It will prove to be an interesting morning, so do come join us. 4 REFUGEE FAMILY Five months have passed since our refugee family arrived. They are doing well Cit Thu is working and the 2 oldest girls are going to school at Head Start. Eh Ko Paw (oldest daughter) will start kindergarten in the fall. Each Sunday a van from Habecker church takes the family to their fellowship for worship. This has been a huge help in meeting Karen people and making new friends. Church World Service s 3-month commitment ended the end of March and our time will be completed the end of June. We would like to have a picnic with the family at the Intercourse Park on Saturday, June 28, if this works with the Thu family. Please mark your calendars more details forth coming. Also, Eh Ko Paw will need uniforms for school in the fall. This can be expensive and we would like to purchase the uniforms for them. Even though Cit Thu is working, it is part-time and money is tight. If you are interested in helping, please let us know. Also, Cit Thu mentioned he would like a guitar. So we are trying to find a used one. If you know of a good used guitar, please be in touch. Thanks again for your help, Loretta & Evie FUN NIGHT IN THE GROVE Wednesday, June 18 6:00 PM hot dogs & beverages provided every family unit bring a dish to share bring lawn chairs and a favorite outdoor activity VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL July 7-11 Intercourse Park JUNE INGATHERING.
