ORGAN & INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT At the Wantirna Seventh-day Adventist church, 119 Mountain Hwy, 7pm on Saturday July 14..Come with your friends and hear students from the David Clark Suzuki School of Music, Avondale, NSW, who will be favouring us with items selected from the works of J.S. Bach, Karg-Elert, Matthias, plus cello and trumpet solos. These students have attained a high degree of excellence, having played in such venues as the Sydney Opera House. The organ on which they will be playing is an Allen Digital Bravura L-333 model being 3 manuals with a 32 note AGO pedal board. Having 58 stops to choose from, this organ produces the most exquisite sounds allowing for piquant flutes to the solid Bombarde. It is also equipped with GeniSys voices that include many contemporary orchestral, theatre organ sounds and effects, percussion and drums. This event promises to be a highlight to all music lovers. Lloyd Grolimund is the Aussie Pastor who runs a TV ministry on Channel 9 that within 10 months received 20,000 viewers and brought in a host of visitors to church every week! He is the pastor of New Hope SDA Church in Sydney and will be coming to Bundoora SDA Church Plant from June 29 July 1 to speak on the theme of Personal Conversion and the Holy Spirit. Pr. 5 Mark B Vodell IT s WORTH A THOUGHT Hezekiah s Tunnel In ancient times to protect oneself it was a good thing to live in the city. These days I think it is safer to live out of the city but that s another topic. As cities developed the walls became bigger and stronger, and so for those attacking - a siege was the popular strategy. Surrounding the city they would not let people in or out and if possible they would attempt to cut off the water supply into the city. The ancient Assyrians were a dominant group from around 2500 BC to around 600 BC and controlled large amounts of land that cover parts of modern day Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran. At times during their reign they expanded their empire south to as far as Egypt. When the Assyrian King Sargon II died a number of states chose this opportunity to rebel and stop paying tribute to their conquerors. This was around 700 BC and the king of Jerusalem at that time was a bloke called Hezekiah and he joined the rebels. He knew the Assyrians would be back to subdue the protesters and so he began making preparations to defend his city. In addition to a good food supply Hezekiah worked to ensure that the city would have its own supply of water just in case the Assyrians from the north came down and implemented a siege. So what they did was cut a tunnel through solid rock from the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam a distance of 533 metres and when they finished like all good projects they made a stone plaque at one end of the tunnel to record their achievement. However over time great things often get forgotten and so for many years there was no evidence of this amazing engineering project. Although the Bible mentions the pool of Siloam numerous times and in both 2 Kings 20 and 2 Chronicles 20 the story is recorded about this amazing construction that occurred thousands of years ago, there did not appear to be any other evidence to support this story. Until in 1838 Edward Robinson re-discovered the tunnel and then in 1880 a teenager by chance noticed the inscription on the wall of the tunnel near the Pool of Siloam. Today that stone plaque known as the Siloam Inscription, is in the Istanbul Museum of Archaeology. Some years ago my wife and I walked through Hezekiah s tunnel in water up to our knees with only the light from my camera. Although narrow and tight in places I was excited to be in a biblical site that has not changed in appearance for 2700 years. But more importantly as I reflect on the story behind Hezekiah s tunnel I am once again reminded that history, archaeology and the Bible match up. While in today s society those with a purely secular worldview will question the reliability of the Good Old Book it is often because they are ignorant of the very tight and detailed evidence that supports Scripture. Although attacked by princes, philosophers, politicians, poets and even priests the Good Old Book still stands as a beacon of light that points to the Creator God.
