5 IT s WORTH A THOUGHT EVIDENCE You probably haven t heard of the Tel Dan Inscription, but for a piece of stone that was written on about 900 years before Jesus walked the dusty roads of the middle east, it sure has generated a good deal of excitement. The Tell Dan Inscription was discovered in 1993 in the northern region of Israel and when the inscription was translated the first non-biblical reference to King David was discovered. For years skeptics had ridiculed many of the stories found in the Bible as being simply exaggerated myths and legends that were developed over time. However this reference to the House of David was another game changer. Perhaps you may have come across someone who is surprised that you believe in Jesus. It may be a raised eyebrow or a comment like elves and fairies at the bottom of the garden, Santa Claus and Jesus are all just part of a good imagination with the obvious message being that it s time to get serious and believe in the real stuff. Two thousand years ago a bloke called Paul wrote: while we do not look at the things, which are seen, but at the things, which are not seen. For the things, which are, seen are temporary, but the things, which are not seen, are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18 This is the same Paul who spent his early years running around having Christians killed because of their beliefs. Eventually he was confronted by the reality of the man Jesus. The Bible writers do not tell us how Paul died but it is widely believed that he died a martyr s death possibly in Rome. Early sources from 95 AD to 392 AD such as Clement, Dionysius, Tertullian, Eusebius and Jerome all state that Paul died a martyr in a similar manner as John the Baptist. Just as Paul encountered the evidence and realised that he needed to adjust his views, so too are many thinking non-believers who examine the data and are changing their minds. We need to recognise that when people are comparing Jesus with Santa and the fairies, they do so only through ignorance. For those who don t believe in the Bible, the study of archaeology must be avoided at all costs, because the spade and the shovel are continuing to dig up the evidence that supports the Old Book. It is this Old Book that refers to Jesus as the Son of David and we know He changed the world and if you accept Him he can change your world too. It s worth a thought.
