Next, we ll talk about the Siege of Jerusalem, by Sennacherib. This is an interesting historical incident because we have: Assyrian accounts Biblical accounts Historical accounts Sennacherib ( BC) Hezekiah ( BC) Conquered Israel Contemporary: Homer After: Hosea, Isaiah, Micah 2

The Biblical Account Isaiah chapters 33 and 36; 2 Kings 18:17; 2 Chronicles 32:9. The invasion is mentioned by Herodotus, who does not refer to Judea and says the invasion ended at Pelusium on the edge of the Nile delta. [2] 7

Now we ll talk about the siege of Lachish. Lachish is important because it has good history behind it several references in several different locations. We re also interested in what the wealth of information about Lachish says about the lack of information about other historical events (key!). 14

The Lachish Mural 8x80 feet Discovered in 1847 by Austin Henry Layard Found in Sennacherib s palace (Nineveh) Records the siege of Lachish in detail 17
Details from The Lachish Mural The siege Sennacherib and his army Assyrian siege weapons Israelite captives 18
Evidence at Lachish today: An Assyrian siege ramp at Lachish (today) Arrowheads are still found at the site! 19
What does this prove? We should note: There is an abundance of information/proof/evidence about the siege of Lachish even though Lachish was the last city sieged during the Assyrian invasion under Sennacherib This failure/success is evident in the Lachish mural that Sennacherib constructed a monument, not to the conquest of the capital city, but to the second most powerful city in the land 20

Moabite Stone Describes: How Moab was oppressed by Omri King of Israel," as the result of the anger of the god Chemosh (2 Kings 3) Mesha's victories over Omri's son (not named) and the men of Gad at Ataroth, and at Nebo and Jehaz 4
Black Obelisk Shalmaneser III was king of Assyria The obelisk confirms the reign of Jehu, king of Israel (2 Kings 9 10) Also is the most ancient image of Israelites (Jehu bowing before S. III) 5
Ketof Hinnom Silver Scrolls Ketof Hinnom is the location ( Shoulder of Hinnom ) These would have been used as some sort of amulet worn, for example It took three years to unroll these due to age and preservation These contain the oldest surviving texts from the Hebrew Bible (7 th century BC) Includes assorted blessings from Exodus, Deuteronomy, Numbers, Daniel, Ruth, Nehemiah: Exodus 20:6 showing mercy to thousands of them that love Me and keep My commandments Deuteronomy 5:10 showing mercy to thousands of them that love Me and keep My commandments Deuteronomy 7:9 keeping covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations Daniel 9:4 keeping covenant and mercy to them that love Him, and to them that keep His commandments Nehemiah 1:5 keeping covenant and mercy for them that love Him and observe His commandments Numbers 6:24 26: 6:24 Yahweh bless you and keep you; 6
6:25 Yahweh make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; 6:26 Yahweh lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. 6
