July 2014 The Voice O f P e n t e c o s t L u t h e r a n C h u r c h As forgiven children of God, we, the Pentecost Family of Faith, are committed to show everyone Life in Christ. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Last month I wrote to you about some of the unexpected things and that will occur in the midst of living missionally because we cannot predict what will happen. This month I d like to challenge or encourage you to partake in an Out and About Adventure As we begin to live missionally, we find ourselves trying things we have never tried before. We find ourselves uncomfortable, challenged, and in situations where we can t predict the outcome. As you begin to explore living missionally, you will learn to embrace new challenges and ideas. The purpose of this task is to help you develop a Beginner s Mind a mind that is willing to embrace the unpredictable, the uncomfortable, and the new. Your assignment (should you choose to accept it) is to go out to dinner sometime this month with just your spouse or your spouse and 1 other couple or a small group of friends. From there, try and choose at least 3 of the following tasks to complete. Be bold. Take risks. Try something new. While at dinner, ask to speak to the manager and compliment an employee. While at dinner, before you pray before your meal, ask your server how you can pray for him/her. Get 3-5 other people you don t know to pose for a picture with you. The picture should be a band cover photo. Eat at a restaurant you would not normally eat at. Find a bookstore and ask someone there what book they are currently reading. Go to a coffee shop and buy the order of the next person in line. Use public transportation to get to dinner. Give away an article of clothing to someone who needs it. Greet someone in a different language. Take time to reflect on your adventure with your spouse or a friend. 1. Why did you choose the tasks that you did? 2. What was most challenging? What seemed to be the easiest? Why? 3. Were there any unexpected outcomes or experiences during this assignment? 4. As you tried something you haven t done before, what were your emotions? What were you thinking in your head? 5. How is embracing a Beginner s Mind a critical element in learning to live missionally? God s blessings as we continue the Missional Journey together!! Pastor J

Sometime during the service the ushers will collect these cards and give them to pastor who will pray for the person or event written on your card. Thank you so much for such a huge number of tabs donated to the Ronald McDonald House. We appreciate your support of the House. You truly make a difference in the lives of the families who stay with us! Sincerely, the Staff and Volunteers of the Ronald McDonald House Remember to save the tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. This includes tabs from soups, vegetables and pet foods too. Continue to bring donation items to the Parish House for an impending fall rummage sale to be announced. Your generous giving is what makes a successful sale. OUTREACH THANKS Thank you for supporting our community project for HALO and our outreach for seniors at Lincoln Lutheran. There is a container for donations under the narthex bulletin board. Like to read? We offer books for adults and children in the basement Fellowship Hall. Just return when you re done. Happy reading!
If you stood still enough, and listened hard enough, you could just make out the squeak of a carriage on a dusty plank road..what a wonderful book club gathering at Gretchen and Jeff Hansen s place! Thank you so much for welcoming us all, and giving us a tour and sharing the rich history of your lovely home! We picked a little, talked a little, cheep, cheep, cheep, talked a little more, then picked a little more! The weather cooperated enough to let us eat outdoors, and eat we did! Enjoying cucumber salsa and chips, fresh watermelon, strawberries, raspberries, apples and fruit salad, stuffed mushrooms, pulled pork, roast possum & potato shish kebob (though it tasted like bratwurst..), cinnamon rolls, three varieties of cookies, ice tea and other adult beverages and rye bread with dip we watched the sun dip below the western sky and discussed the unique attributes of The Testing, by Joelle Charbonneau. There were comparisons with the Hunger Game series, and a robust discussion of the characters and unique plot twists. Overall a good review, and some are already reading the 2 nd book in the series. We enjoyed having Susan Murcek s cousin Karen join us all the way from Connecticut! (And she made sure to read the book before she came!) Get ready for some heavy reading for next month, The 34 Ton Bat, by Steve Rushin. This is The Story of Baseball as Told Through Bobbleheads, Cracker Jacks, Jockstraps, Eye Black and 375 Other Strange and Unforgettable Objects. Steve Rushin is a Sports Illustrated writer, and we can look forward to an interesting foray into the sport of baseball. We will be meeting on Saturday, July 19 6:30pm at Pastor & Courtney s home at 1518 N. Main St. Come join us as we toss around our viewpoints and see whether or not Mr. Rushin homered or went foul! Any questions about book club, please contact Kathy McGregor at Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. John 14:27 While reading my devotion the morning of June 21 st, I was reminded in a good way about my car accident on March 28, While coming home from Maundy Thursday church service, I was in a car accident with my son and grandsons. My son was driving by my request and we came to the intersection of Ohio Street and Durand Avenue. I was turned to the back talking to my grandsons when I felt a bump. When I turned around the car was going over the median and we ended up traveling at a high rate of speed 400 feet entering Pritchard Park, eventually hitting a tree. Seeing my son slumped over the wheel, nonresponsive, seemed unreal. The main reason for writing this to my congregation is the peace and quietness that followed me throughout the accident. This surely was God s peace filling the car. He was in total control and I felt His peaceful presence in my Jeep. It was truly a peace that passes all human understanding. The boys didn t cry out in fear, and I felt deep inside the love of God no matter how things turned out. I experienced God s peace first-hand. I knew His love filled the car and I felt so content. God is love. His words are true. Throughout my recovery I felt Him and because I had His peace first-hand I trusted Him for my healing. This was an experience I will never forget, not only for the healing of my injuries, but for Him showing me He is with me always. Janet Greco Please label your food pantry donations for the refrigerator or freezer. Some pre-made labels are in an envelope taped on the freezer. This helps the food pantry coordinator to keep track of donations intended for the pantry and those to be used for specific occasions in the church. You can also contact Sheri Hansen at or jhansen347@wi.rr.com.
Stewardship Corner It s Summer but our bills still have to be paid. We hope you ll remember to send in your offering even if you are on vacation. Stewardly Tip: God Cares Don t you find it frustrating to do stewardly things: reduce, reuse, recycle, turn off the lights when they re not needed, lower the thermostat in winter or raise it is summer, minimize engine idling walk more, use transit more, not wasting my times, etc. yet there are so many that just don t seem to care. Just know that God cares do it for Him! The Stewardship Committee met with Pastor Jacob and started working on a special service for August 17. We re planning a Noisy Offering for the kids (big and little if adults would like to be part of it, too). We ll give you more on this in the bulletin and August newsletter, but it includes saving your change (although we ll take paper money, too,) for a special project at Pentecost. Let s Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord! Pastor Jacob is also planning a mini series (3 week) on Stewardship for October. Stewardship by Action Sheri Kinney shows God s love in action through her work. Sheri owns A Polished Look where you can get your fingernails and toenails polished in just about any color. For those who are unable to make it to her shop, she also makes house calls just like doctors used to do. Many people in our congregation have benefitted from her visits, lifting the spirits of those who are too ill or unable to get out. Sheri was also part of the Block Party one year in the children s play area. She made many little girls happy that day with their beautiful fingernails. Speaking of Love in Action How about Vern and Betty Schattner celebrating their 67 th Wedding Anniversary in church June 14 th! Vern was also the oldest father in church that Saturday (Father s Day weekend). It s all in the family! When Abigail Ekstowicz was baptized on June 22 nd, she wore a dress that has been worn by the daughters, granddaughters, and great granddaughters of Mary Boudreau. Mary said the dress is 57 years old now and only one granddaughter missed wearing it because two granddaughters were baptized on the same day. Sharing the dress would have been kind of difficult that day. Thanks to Pam Sinclair for sharing some of the history of the dress with us, saying she had worn that same dress when she was baptized. Pictured are Ashley Heldt and daughter Abigail. Our Favorite Hymns list is up to 49 now. Of those, we have used at least 16 in Sunday services so far with plans to use Days of Elijah in our first Sunday outdoor service. If you haven t had time to list your favorites, there s still time. Or you can just give your list to Joyce Hasko at any time. Please put your name on it so we know whose favorites we re using. Raynae is even training her dolls and monkey to help out with singing as she made them song books.
Father s Day Weekend at Pentecost We looked for oldest and youngest Father/Son and Father/Daughter combinations attending church together Father s Day weekend. Here are the pictures we got. Vern Schattner easily won the oldest dad spot Saturday night (Vern and Daughter Lois Perman) Tom Hasko must be youngest(?) Saturday (Rachel, Tom, Dan) Fathers, Sons and Daughters on Sunday Bill Hasko with Tom and Tim (oldest) Pastor Jacob with Tyler (youngest) Trung Bitner with Lucy Pastor Babel had 3 generations (Alyssa, Pastor, Cheryl Lynn) while Shane Honoré brought 4 generations (Grandpa Bill Smith, Mom Debbie Honoré, Shane, sons Austin and Collin)
Pentecost Lutheran Church Invites Children to Weird Animals Vacation Bible School: Where Jesus Love Is One-of-a-Kind A summer kids event called Weird Animals VBS will be hosted at Pentecost from July 27 to July 31. At Weird Animals, kids will learn about some of God s most creative creations! They ll participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, make and dig into yummy treats, experience cool Bible adventures, and collect Bible Memory Buddies to remind them they are one of a kind. Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes with The Tail End a celebration that gets everyone involved in living what they ve learned. Family members and friends are encouraged to join in daily for this special time at 8:15. Kids at Weird Animals VBS will join an international mission effort to share God s love by providing water for school children in India. Weird Animals VBS is for kids ages 3 to 12 and will run from 1 to 4 on Sunday and 6 to 8:30 Monday through Thursday. 8 Save the Date Sunday, September 14 th 50 Years Behind the Organ Joyce Hasko Mark your calendars now -- We invite you to join us on Sunday, September 14th at 9:00 AM when we celebrate with Joyce Hasko, who is enjoying her 50th year behind the organ at Pentecost Lutheran Church! To those of you who know Joyce, you know that she has always had a passion for music in worship and we look forward to a worship service filled with favorite hymns, accompanied by organ and a host of instrumentalists. Maybe she worked one of your favorite songs into a worship service, or found the music and a soloist to sing a song that had a special meaning to you or a loved one, provided an opportunity for you to explore your vocal talents as a soloist, or with a small group or the choir, or perhaps you are one of the many brass, woodwind or string instrumentalists that have accompanied hymns with Joyce at Pentecost Lutheran Church or another setting over the years. Whatever your connection may be, Pentecost Lutheran Church invites you to celebrate with Joyce this September!
