Mission Statement The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
Letter from our State Leaders resources to provide strengthsbased case management services. Basically, we invest special time and attention in a few - with the expectation that, together, we can move them from the edge of poverty to a stable, self-supporting lifestyle, which can be passed down to the next generation. Dear Friends and Supporters of The Salvation Army in New Jersey: Thank you. Our hearts have been touched by the enormous outpouring of goodwill and generosity which enabled The Salvation Army in New Jersey to serve 708,884 people in We have the blessed privilege of seeing lives transformed day after day because of your willingness to invest in the lives of local children, adolescents, adults, and families who find themselves in need of a helping hand. We know that your support does not just translate into school supplies, meals, lodging, and utility assistance. It goes so far as to hold working poor families together when they face a financial crisis like a hospitalization or job loss. It helps men and women better themselves through education and training for future employment. It gives children experiences - like a week at summer camp or weekly music and arts programs - that inspire them and encourage them to pursue higher goals. It provides comfort and companionship to senior citizens, disaster survivors, and veterans. By partnering with The Salvation Army, you are not just meeting practical needs; you are offering hope for a brighter future. Speaking of hope, with your support The Salvation Army in New Jersey is making great strides in its "Pathway of Hope" initiative. Pathway of Hope, part of a nationwide endeavor, provides enhanced services to families with children desiring to take action to break the cycle of crisis and intergenerational poverty. Pathway of Hope is a collaborative approach utilizing existing Salvation Army and community Again, with your help, we are launching new and enhanced services in places all over the state - in places like Hazlet, Salem, Orange and the Newark Ironbound district. ESL classes are popping up in Perth Amboy, Englewood, and Morristown. After-school initiatives are taking shape in Atlantic City and Elizabeth. These are exciting times to be in The Salvation Army! We hope that you will not only continue to be an instrumental part of the ministry of The Salvation Army, but that you will invite others to do the same. We need you. We need an Army. May God bless you as you care for others. Majors Ivan K. and Christine Rock State Leaders The Salvation Army New Jersey Division 3

Transforming Lives In Newark Allie Marx, 16 years old, has been a member of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Newark Ironbound for more than eight years. In search of a safe place while her parents were at work, Allie quickly joined many programs and found her passion through the Performing Arts Club. After performing in many club musicals, she won the Hank Aaron Chase the Dream Scholarship, which helped provide voice lessons for Allie. Through Allie s club experience, she has had the opportunity to perform at many high profile events, including the Boys & Girls Club National Conference in New Orleans; the Boys & Girls Club National Youth of the Year in Washington D.C.; the Northeast Youth of the Year celebration in New York honoring Victor Cruz; and the Boys & Girls Club of New Jersey s Concert for Kids. In addition, Allie s success in the community resulted in her being recognized as one of the 100 People of Newark. We have all witnessed Allie pave the way for our kids to follow into the arts, says Zelia Oliveira, Programs Director of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Newark Ironbound. The club has allowed Allie to pursue her dream to the fullest she is a wonderful role model and we are excited to see the great things she will continue to do. Giving back is what Allie truly enjoys. She encourages club kids to follow their dreams and to be great at whatever passion they may have. Someday, Allie hopes to become a successful performer and is thankful to the club for always encouraging her to pursue her passion. 6
Transforming Lives In Morristown At The Salvation Army in Morristown, members of the Corps Community Center are often treated as if they are a part of one big family and that is exactly how the Rodriguez family was treated during their time of difficulty. Silvia Rodriguez, whose children are a part of the childcare center, explains in her own words how The Salvation Army came to the rescue in her family s time of need: The Salvation Army has been the light at the end of a tunnel during a time we thought everything was in darkness. My husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer in a period when things were already difficult, especially financially. My two young daughters and I were devastated, suffering for my husband. I often felt burdened not sure how I was going to be able to juggle my husband s health condition and staying strong for my daughters. But right at the face of all the adversity, that was when The Salvation Army stepped in with support and most importantly, love. Captains Paul and Eileen Valverde and their team treated us very well, like we were a part of their family. When we had no way of visiting my husband, the officers provided us with transportation to the hospital, which was over an hour away. In addition, they also covered all of our utility bills and rent for a month and gave us a huge food basket! For the first time in a while, I felt relief because I no longer had to stress over how to maintain our household while my husband was in the hospital. The Salvation Army provided me with the relief and strength necessary to support my family. I am unable to find the right words to thank The Salvation Army for what they did for my family so the best thing I can do is volunteer my time during the Christmas season, for whatever they may need, to express my gratitude to this 7 wonderful organization for their love, aid and support.
The Salvation Army Kicks-Off Red Kettle Campaign Launch and Giving Tuesday at Newark Penn Station The Salvation Army New Jersey Division kicked off its highly-visible Red Kettle Campaign on Giving Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Penn Station in Newark. The event took place during the commuter rush, and The Salvation Army s iconic Red Kettle stands, bells and live music drove excitement to raise funds that provided meals for families and individuals during the holiday season. The rainy weather didn't dampen spirits as the Newark Ironbound Boys & Girls Zee Club youth singers and The Salvation Army Brass Band got the crowd in the Christmas spirit with their performances throughout the event. Over 60 Salvation Army officers, State Advisory Board members and volunteers dressed in bright red I am a Volunteer t-shirts, spreading Christmas cheer as they distributed bells to commuters during the morning rush. Money raised during the Red Kettle Campaign supports holiday and seasonal assistance as well as other programs and services throughout the year. 8

The Salvation Army Celebrates 125 Years in Montclair! Beginning Friday, October 7, 2016, The Salvation Army in Montclair celebrated its 125th Anniversary with a full weekend of festivities. The three-day event began with a reception on Friday night in which members of the community who have supported The Salvation Army were invited to attend. Other activities that took place were a 5K run/walk at Brookdale Park which raised $3,000 towards youth programs; a community-wide health fair; the beautification of a local park fountain; a mini concert featuring Christian singer-songwriter, David Pettigrew; and much more! In addition, both Colonel Mark Tillsley, Chief Secretary and Colonel Sharon Tillsley, Secretary for Women s Ministries from The Salvation Army Canadian Territory served as keynote speakers and brought an inspiring word for those in attendance. To conclude the celebration, members of The Salvation Army in Montclair congregation took place in a short march on Sunday morning near the Corps Community Center, giving witness to their faith and bringing the weekend s events to an end. 10
The Salvation Army in Montclair has been an integral part of the community, serving over 32,000 individuals in a year. 11
Star 99.1 Honors The Salvation Army at 9/11 Empty Shoe Memorial The Salvation Army in New Jersey was honored by Star 99.1 FM (WAWZ) a radio station based in Somerset, New Jersey on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 with an event called The Empty Shoe Memorial. Throughout July and August, Star 99.1 staff were out in force visiting malls, churches, festivals and retail outlets to collect shoes for the memorial. 2,996 pairs of shoes were collected, representing every person lost in the attacks. The memorial was on display from September 10-18, We are proud to honor the heroes who demonstrated unparalleled courage on that day, says Scott Taylor, General Manager of WAWZ. We recognize specifically the valiant work of The Salvation Army at Ground Zero in the days and months following the attacks in providing physical and spiritual support to the rescue and recovery efforts." The Salvation Army is truly humbled to be honored by Star 99.1 FM for our work during 9/11, says Captain Cindy-Lou Drummond, Divisional Secretary for The Salvation Army in New Jersey, who was on-hand to accept the award. As our nation suffered one of the worst tragedies in our history, we are grateful that we were able to support people spiritually, physically and emotionally. It is in times of crisis and desperation, whether personal or in this case nationally, that we do the work we do not for the recognition but to help people in times of need. 12
Camden Kroc Center Partners with the Food Bank of South Jersey for Choice Food Pantry Doing the Most Good is always our goal. Without programs such as Retail Rescue, we would fall dramatically short of that mark. Thanks to a program titled Retail Rescue, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center in Camden has been able to partner with the Food Bank of South Jersey and the ShopRite of Garden State Pavilion in Cherry Hill, New Jersey to expand the amount of families served over the previous calendar year. Every Tuesday and Thursday, ShopRite fills a trailer with fresh produce, dairy, bread and meat which are then distributed to clients who have appointments for the Camden Kroc Center s food pantry. Through its membership with Feeding America, the Food Bank learned of Retail Rescue which connected donors directly with the emergency feeding programs that benefit from their generosity, said Kristin DeJesus, Food Resources Communicator for the Food Bank of South Jersey. The enabled agency program allows food banks 13 to extend their reach by servicing more donors and getting the food to the people who need it quicker. Over the last year, countless individuals received over 150,000 pounds of food which translates to over 55,000 meals! It is a program the Camden Kroc Center and the Food Bank of South Jersey hope to continue for many years to come.
