Our work is Christ-centered and client-centered. Therefore, it is our mission to serve each client as a child of God created in His image and likeness. We fulfill immediate and long-term needs for our clients 365 days a year; providing warm meals and emergency financial assistance, as well as counseling, housing and family reunification. In 2014, we touched the lives of 94,419 men, women and children in the Diocese of Arlington. However, the amount of people who call for help is growing daily. Their voices are urgent, desperate; perhaps we are their last best chance. Just as they rely on us, we rely on you, the faithful and people of good will in the Diocese of Arlington. Your gifts of time and treasure bring hope and healing to those in desperate need. 2

5 Whatever we needed and whenever it was, Catholic Charities was and still is there to help us. As the days pass, I feel more comfortable here than I was in Nepal. Bhim and his family lived in a refugee camp in Nepal for 17 years. As a legal asylee, Bhim was welcomed into the United States by Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) office. They found and furnished an apartment for him, helped to integrate him into the community and found him a job. He started out as a security guard at GEICO Insurance, but after hard work and promotions, he now works in their claims office. This year he was able to purchase a home in 5 Fredericksburg for himself and his family. Migration and Refugee Services

6 The St. Lucy Project Highlights from 2014 Opened three new counseling locations on parish campuses: St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Colonial Beach, St. William of York in Stafford and Holy Family in Dale City Increased total number of counseling locations to nine: six parish campuses and three office locations, enabling our services to be available near those who need it most Distributed 729,000 lbs. of food to the hungry Received a large financial donation to re-energize our food program from there The St. Lucy Project was born to feed the hungry and nourish the soul Served 23 parish pantries and 22 ecumenical pantries across the diocese Awarded a refrigerated truck to deliver healthy and perishable food throughout the diocese Housed 98 people between Christ House Men s Transitonal Shelter and St. Margaret of Cortona Family Transitional Residences, including 31 children Encouraged residents to participate in individual and group therapy, financial and computer literacy, Bible studies and parenting classes to enhance their transformational experience Welcomed more than 2,000 volunteers who put their faith in action by donating more than 70,000 hours of their time to Catholic Charities Saved more than $1,582,000 because of our dedicated volunteers 6

7 Goals for FY15 Continue adding Catholic-based counselors and counseling locations at parish campuses across the diocese Increase outreach to the elderly by sharing Best Practices with parishes across the diocese Launch The St. Lucy Project with a new distribution hub in Manassas and relocate pantries in Front Royal and Leesburg Double the amount of food distributed in 2014 by delivering 1.5 million pounds of food to needy families in our diocese Expand our healthy food initiative by acquiring a second refrigerated truck to deliver fresh food to the 21 counties in the Diocese of Arlington Expand our legal services and staff so we can serve unaccompanied minors Increase parish participation through volunteerism to support the New Evangelization I m finally able to be the father my children deserve. I m not sure where I d be today if I hadn t come to Catholic Charities for help. I think this place saved my life. St. Margaret of Cortona Family Transitional Residence Greg s life was spiraling out of control because of an undiagnosed mental illness. He had lost his job and his family. Greg sought the help of Catholic Charities and began weekly therapy sessions with one of our licensed counselors. It s the first time in three years that he has had steady employment. Most importantly, his relationship with his children has drastically improved. 7

9 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Pregnancy and Adoption Support From the very first time I called the Catholic Charities office, their professionalism and compassion was overwhelming. They knew the journey I was on and could anticipate my questions before I could ask them. Knowing that my son is in the hands of parents that I got to select is such a comforting feeling. Knowing that he s getting the life that I could not provide helps confirm my decision. A mother who made an adoption plan for her son through our Pregnancy and Adoption Support program 9

I was lost out there. They really try to pick you up at your lowest level whether it s finding a job, helping with your personal relationships or pretty much anything that benefits you. I honestly don t know how I would be managing without Catholic Charities and Christ House. Jordan was suddenly on his own after being forced to leave his own home by an alcoholic stepfather. Unable to call on other family members, Jordan was homeless and only 20 years old. He found a home at Christ House. He was able to get back on his feet and begin following his dreams of finishing his education and joining the Air Force. 11
