2 From our Corps Officers Captains Michael & Christine Harris Dear Friends: Let us start by saying what a privilege it is to serve God in this community. We never ceased to be amazed at the amount of work The Salvation Army is able to accomplish, and it can only be done due to the generosity of people like you. Thank you. As your read through the pages of this annual report you will see a lot of numbers. Statistics are a necessary part of what we do, but I feel they hide the reality of our ministry. For every 1,000 people there are 1,000 stories, each one needing to be told. These faceless statistics hide the child whose only true encouragement to excel at school comes from the Boys & Girls Club volunteer who sits down with them. They hide the man coming through our doors, cap in hand saying, I lost my job and I have nowhere else to go but the Shelter of Hope. They obscure the elderly couple whose power is about to be turned off in the middle of winter because they simply cannot afford to pay the bill. This year you have enabled us to help these folk; you have been a shield of protection for them; you have helped The Salvation Army in May God bless all who read the pages of this annual report. OUR MISSION STATEMENT The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelic part of the Universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

4 Programs & Services How The Salvation Army is : F a m i l y S t o r e s 8 s t o r e s... The Salvation Army of Hickory operates eight Family Stores in its service area. Each Family Store offers great new and slightly used clothing, household items and other stuff that is another man s treasure. Revenue generated from our Family Stores helps provide the resources necessary to offer our community a hand up, not a hand out. S t o r e L o c a t i o n s A s t o r e n e a r y o u... Granite Falls Hickory High Country Maiden Marion Morganton Newton Taylorsville B o y s a n d G i r l s C l u b A s a f e a n d f u n p l a c e t o b e... Through The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs in Burke and Catawba Counties children and youth are provided educational after-school and summer day care, gang prevention education, sports and recreation, and character building programming which shape them into caring, responsible, productive young people in our community. Spiritual direction is given to children and youth through Corps programs.

5 Programs & Services How The Salvation Army is : C r i s i s H e l p C e n t e r S h e l t e r o f H o p e V o l u n t e e r s M e e t i n g t h e i m m e d i a t e a n d s h o r t - t e r m n e e d s... The Emergency Assistance program offers financial assistance with mortgages, rent, and utilities through our offices in Hickory, Morganton, Granite Falls, Taylorsville, Marion and Boone. Additionally, through this program, thousands of families receive seasonal assistance from The Salvation Army with toys for their children, food, furniture and clothing, helping them make the holiday season joyful and festive. Through this program people are able to stabilize their crisis situations and maintain self respect and dignity. 7 2 b e d s a n d a s a f e e n v i r o n m e n t... The Shelter of Hope is a safe and secure place for homeless men, women, and children to stay while their basic human needs are met. Residents receive two meals a day (breakfast and supper) and are provided with clean linens and all necessary personal hygiene products. Guidance and direction are given each client toward transitional and permanent housing opportunities. G i v i n g b a c k i n a v a r i e t y o f w a y s... in 2011, 997 individuals assisted The Salvation Army at events such as The Catawba Valley Christmas Bureau and World Day of Play. In addition individuals, Church groups, civic clubs and local businesses helped serve in the Shelter of Hope, mentor the children in the Boys & Girls Club, help out in the Family Stores and painted and cleaned our facilities. These are just a few ways you can give back to your community through The Salvation Army.

6 Programs & Services How The Salvation Army is : C o r p s - C o m m u n i t y C e n t e r A t t h e h e a r t o f o u r p r o g r a m s a r e i t s W o r s h i p C e n t e r s. Our corps-community centers serve as a place of worship for our community. Each Salvation Army officer is ordained as a pastor and serve as director of all corps activities. In addition to weekly worship opportunities, corps activities include Bible studies, men s and women s fellowship/service groups, religious and social youth programs, music education, and volunteer work. D i s a s t e r S e r v i c e s R e a d y a t a m o m e n t s n o t i c e.. We assist victims of both natural and man-made disasters. Always among the first on the scene of major disasters, The Salvation Army officers and volunteers are trained to meet all kinds of emergencies by providing food, shelter, clothing, spiritual & grief counseling, and comfort to victims. C a m p W a l t e r J o h n s o n C h a n g i n g l i v e s o n e s u m m e r a t a t i m e... Continuing a long-standing Salvation Army service, and a long history of Salvation Army camping in the Carolinas, in Denton, NC since Each summer, June-August, we are able to send youth for sleep away camp. Swimming, hiking, fishing, boats, high-ropes course, rock climbing wall, crafts are just some of what camp offers. Situated on High Rock Lake, for a week that can literally change their lives.

A couple of years ago while Ringing the Bell outside of Wal-Mart here in Hickory a lady stopped and asked me What does The Salvation Army do? I answered by paraphrasing Mathew 25:35. For I was hungry and you gave me food I was thirsty and you gave me drink I was a stranger and you welcomed me She said well that s a pretty good thing to do and placed a donation into our Kettle. The following are just a few examples of how the Army has put your support to use in our community during 2011; Together we provided homeless people lodging every night of the entire year. Served two hot meals per day to the hungry. Provided financial assistance to those in need. Provided children who need us most with a safe place to grow in character and improve their study skills through our Boys & Girls Club programs. Thank you for your generous support over the years.
