1 MEET THE CAMPOLO SCHOLARS A YEAR IN REVIEW DEAR PARTNER IN MINISTRY, When we launched the Campolo Center for Ministry less than two years ago, we had an ambitious, long-term, strategic goal to raise up a new generation of pastors and Christian leaders. We longed to see talented young people serve and revitalize our churches and help our communities of faith navigate the challenges of the day. ROBERT GAUTHIER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Our long-time supporters and new friends agreed this was an effective way to support the church what Tony calls God s instrument for changing the world while also honoring Tony s decades long, faithful service to the Kingdom of God, Evangelical Christianity and his alma mater, Eastern University. Well, during these past two years, I ve had the privilege of sharing Tony s and Eastern University President, Dr. Robert Duffett s vision with our friends and supporters all over the country. Then, when two generous friends offered to help us realize this vision by sponsoring students preparing for full-time Christian service, we were thrilled to launch the Campolo Scholars pilot program last fall. Now that we ve had a year of meeting and praying with, mentoring and encouraging Scholars. As Tony says in his enclosed letter, you have every reason to be proud of and encouraged by our inaugural cohort of Campolo Scholars. They are committed and passionate, smart and sensitive to God s leading. So, here they are! As we look forward to them returning for their sophomore years and as we review applications for a second cohort of Campolo Scholars, please keep Tony, our students, faculty and staff and all of us at the Campolo Center at Eastern University in your prayers. 3 OUTREACH IF YOU LOOK AT THE BIBLE, YOU CAN SEE SO MANY TIMES WHERE MUSIC AND DANCE IS USED TO THE GLORY OF GOD. MY HOPE IS TO OPEN A CHRISTIAN DANCE STUDIO THAT CAN HELP GIRLS LIKE THE ONES I MET IN THAT CLASS GROW THROUGH DANCING AND IN THEIR FAITH. E M I LY PA S T I N D O U G L A S S V I L L E, PA CHARITY IN SCRIPTURES, LOVE IS NEARLY ALWAYS USED AS A VERB, NOT AS A FEELING. Twice a week, Michelle and her classmates go into the city. They do traditional work like putting together food bags for the homeless, but more importantly in Michelle s view, they build relationships with people who are struggling. Calling people to all-out Christianity is an ambitious thing. Sometimes people in leadership are afraid to scare people away to challenge them too much, or ask them to give too much. But that doesn t do justice to the seriousness of what we re called to. And the result is a lot of suffering in our cities. MICHELLE MILES W O O D S TO W N, N J This is where she thinks leaders who have gone through the Campolo Scholars Program will make a difference. We need God s people around us for things like this, and the intentional network and building each other up that happens in the Campolo Scholars Program is shaping a generation of leaders that does this. A generation of leaders that knows the other side of the world which may be right down the street from us.

4 MUSIC What if Christian songwriters took their music to the next level? What if in addition to inspiring the church, their music went out among the lost and broken and invited them in? LENISE MORALES PHILADELPHIA, PA One of the biggest challenges Lenise sees for the church is the number of people who have been hurt by Christians, or consider themselves unlovable by good people. Rather than try to talk them out of their own pain, Lenise wants to use her art to touch them. I WANT PEOPLE TO MEET JESUS IN MY SONGS. background is in worship music which reaches who are already believers she has been inspired to write songs that might not be church songs; songs about day-to-day things that invoke hope and can invite people into an encounter with God. She explains: Music can show people that they aren t the sum of their sins. And when a church stands on the idea that we must love people for who they are, while still inviting them into the Truth rather than going for the popularity vote, anything is possible. WILL ABBOTT WEST CHESTER, PA During his freshman year, Will has passionately pursued his spiritual studies and has been eager to glean as much wisdom and teaching as he can from Tony (who in turn has been impressed by his intellect, inquisitiveness, and desire to serve others). Will is inspired by Tony s vision for ministry, which combines personal evangelism and social justice, and he looks forward to serving the Church and building the Kingdom when he graduates. THE CAMPOLO SCHOLARS PROGRAM MOTIVATED ME TO GO OUT, TO SPEAK TO THE NEEDY, TO SING TO HARD AUDIENCES WHO NEED THE GOSPEL THE MOST, TO DO HARD THINGS I WOULD NEVER HAVE DONE BEFORE, BECAUSE I D BEEN INSPIRED TO LOVE PEOPLE.

5 A WORD FROM TONY Dear Friend, Campolo Scholars pilot program. Scholars. They are a great bunch the vanguard of a proactive movement that seeks out and equips the best and brightest young Christians for work in the ministry. We are looking forward to taking on new scholars and investing in them. We will continue to offer programs to encourage young people to serve the church. And we will provide lectures, mentors and resources to aid young leaders in their development and maturing. There are two ways to participate: Scholarship Fund support now will help Campolo Scholars in the future. Larger gifts will help endow this program for years to come. Our Team support now will provide staff to oversee CCM operations and to develop and run programs. and enhance this work to equip the best and brightest young Christians. P.S.
