Over 1 million youth are arrested every year in the US, with 500,000 sent to one of nearly 1,400 detention centers across the country. On any day 57,000 youth are serving a sentence in a facility - the juvenile justice equivalent of jail. Family relationships, community connections, education and employment are all interrupted and negatively impacted. Straight Ahead Ministries believes that this time of crisis can become the first step towards a transformed life. Straight Ahead Ministries began as a small bible study group in MA. Two Gordon-Conwell seminarians wanted to establish a program for children in detention to learn more about the bible and Christianity. Straight Ahead Ministries has expanded in the last thirty years and now exists in 40 states, 35 countries, and seven languages. Straight Ahead Ministries now offers a variety of programs for youth ages who have had experience in detention. They continue to provide bible discussion groups along with substance abuse recovery discussion groups, leadership development, case management, job and school support, and other programs. One of their programs is the Breaking Bread program. The youth gather on Fridays to serve a meal to Main South folks. The youth prepare the meal and then socialize with the folks who come into the space. This program takes place on Friday afternoons from 3-5pm Straight Ahead Ministries in Worcester currently actively case manages 40 youth and serves 200+ youth on a regular basis.

2 CBL students are welcome to assist the youth in preparing the meal they serve to Main South folks. This program runs on Fridays from 3-5pm. Catholic Charities believes that every person has the right to life, housing, food, shelter, clothing, and health care, and that all should be enabled to participate in the decisions that vitally affect them. Emergency Stabilization and Homeless Prevention Program: Catholic Charities Emergency Stabilization and Homeless Prevention Program provides a food pantry, a community clothing closet, case management, financial education and budgeting guidance, community referrals, Thanksgiving baskets, and back-to-school supplies for folks who are in need. The Food Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 11:30am to 2:30pm. Individuals and families living in zip codes and can pick up food every 30 days from the pantry. The pantry is also available for individuals and families living in surrounding towns.

3 Those folks can visit the pantry every 60 days. Per month the pantry services approximately 2,000 people and distributes 8,000 pounds of food. Students are welcome to serve in the food pantry. The pantry is open from 11:30am-2:30pm Monday through Friday. Volunteers must serve 11:15am-1:15pm Monday through Thursday only. Pre-Service Requirements: Orientation meeting with site supervisor, CORI form, Volunteer application Volunteers Needed: 2 per day (5 maximum) The Mustard Seed 93 Piedmont Street, Worcester, MA Michael Boover mbhoundofheaven@gmail.com The Mustard Seed Catholic Worker is a house of hospitality in the Catholic Worker movement, an apostolic movement begun in 1933 by Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day. The intent of the movement is to give flesh to the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth and Catholic social thought by doing the works of mercy and opposing the works of war. Our mission is to perform the corporal and spiritual works of mercy at a personal and social sacrifice, to nurture and promote a culture of concern and generosity so that human suffering is relieved and a better society not only envisioned but lived as a microcosm of what can be pursued more widely by allies and friends. The Mustard Seed (founded in 1972) is a community of faith, hope and love that has manifested as a living room, as a refuge for the hungry, lonely, and homeless and as an ideal (that in the ideal) is what a Christian community looks like or should look like in practice. Our community is committed to: prayer, personal and communal conversion of life, clarification of thought (lifelong learning), the building of a society where it is easier for people to be good and a work culture that sees labor as sacred and that upholds small-scale agriculture and artisanship as virtues and hopeful means for building a new society in the shell of the old. The Mustard Seed has a major role in feeding the hungry. The house of hospitality at 93 Piedmont Street offers a free meal to Worcester s hungry. The community has fed the hungry for over 40 years and has also worked on behalf of peace and environmental and social justice in many campaigns and initiatives over that time. The community remains committed to the Catholic Worker vision as espoused in its Aims and Purposes published each May in the Catholic Worker newspaper. Students are welcome to serve in the food pantry and then join in the shared meal, which feeds families in the neighborhood (approximately families served each week). The pantry is open from 4-5:45p on Wednesdays followed by a shared meal that runs until 7pm (therefore, the time requirement is

4 from 4-7pm). This would be a particularly great option for students interested in Catholic Social Teaching, as the supervisor of the pantry is well versed in CST and the Catholic Worker Movement. Pre-Service Requirements: Orientation meeting with site supervisor Volunteers Needed: 1-2 Pernet Family Health Service Food Pantry 237 Millbury Street, Worcester, MA Emily Linhares, Director of Family & Community Development (primary contact) elinhares@pernetfamilyhealth.org ext. 224 Pernet Family Health Service is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, DPH-certified home-health agency working with individuals and families to provide family-centered, health and social services that lead to long term strengthening and enhancement of family and community life. Pernet runs an emergency food and infant supply pantry. Residents of Worcester s zip code can receive food from the food pantry once a month by showing identification. To obtain baby and infant supplies such as formula, baby food, cereal and diapers, clients must show proof of child (such as a birth certificate or WIC card). Supplies are given out in quantities to last approximately three days. Clients are also encouraged to talk to trained staff and volunteers about long-term hunger solutions such as Food Stamps and WIC. The Emergency Assistance Program is possible through grants from Project Bread, the United Way of Central Massachusetts, Rachel s Table and the generous contributions of local groups, individuals, churches and the Worcester County Food Bank. Pantry hours are: Mondays, 1:00-3:00 PM; Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11 AM - 3 PM. Students are invited to serve at Pernet s food pantry. Students can either work during the pantry hours or volunteer to assist with grocery shopping (Mondays at 9:30am). Students should serve for one weekly 2-hour time block. 5 St. John s Parish opened in Worcester, MA in It is a Roman Catholic church with a mission to serve the poor. Located in the heart of downtown Worcester, the church beckons all believers, especially immigrants and the poor to a place of solace and hope. St. John s embraces Southeast Asian, Spanish and African parishioners. For decades, St. John s Food Pantry has provided sorely needed food to more than 1,000 people annually. Their Free Meal Program serves more than 1,000 people each month. St. John s rectory is a sober house, and St. John s provide meetings for those in Alcoholics Anonymous. St. John s also reaches out to those recently released from prison and offers spiritual guidance and moral support. Students are welcome to assist with the meal program at St. John s Xavier Center (next door to the Parish). From 6am-10:30am Monday thru Friday, St. John s opens its doors to those who are food insecure. Students are invited to serve a 2 hour shift on any day during that time frame.
