2 For one hundred and twenty-five years, the kettle has been one of The Salvation Army s most beloved and recognized symbols, no question. But the kettle is just a first step, a bridge to something much greater. When you give to the kettle, your donations go in support of the vast network of programs represented by our Red Box programs like our soup kitchens that provide food for the hungry, our shelters that give people in need a place to sleep, and our day-care centers that ensure quality care for underserved children. The Red Kettle and Red Box are vehicles that help us achieve what is The Salvation Army s ultimate goal: bringing help and hope to people who need it the most. LT. Yicel, to The Salvation Army and all our supporters, whose son, Demitrius, went from struggling with anger issues to a happier place when he discovered a passion for playing guitar while attending The Salvation Army s after-school program. 4 COMFORTING THE SICK AND LONELY Salvation Army Community Care Workers Deliver Christmas Joy I DIDN T THINK I D HAVE A CHRISTMAS. An elderly hospital patient, upon receiving a holiday visit and gift from Salvation Army Community Care workers, who bring holiday joy to thousands of patients, young and old. 5 I HUG EVERYBODY, BECAUSE I JUST THINK EVERY- ONE NEEDS LOVE. AND AT THE SALVATION ARMY, EVERYBODY GETS LOVE. THEY DO. Jackie, who earlier in her life experienced abuse, abandonment, and illness but who has now found love and acceptance as part of The Salvation Army family and working with children from The Salvation Army s after-school program. Superstorm Sandy evacuee Cecil Lloyd-Bey, who returned to his renovated Far Rockaway home this past summer thanks to the financial support of The Salvation Army and the efforts of Friends of Rockaway, SBP (formerly St. Bernard Project), AmeriCorps volunteers, and others who cared. At right: Cecil Lloyd-Bey cuts the ribbon on his renovated home. The Salvation Army provided 100% of the funding for the project. 8 FROM THE RED KETTLE Ring That Bell! The Salvation Army Kettle Turns 125 in 2016 KEEP THE POT BOILING. The words from a sign, placed by Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee, next to a pot he d set up at a San Francisco ferry landing in 1891 in order to collect money for Christmas dinner for the poor. Captain McFee s boiling pot is considered the prototype of the collection device that would go on to become one of the world s most renowned symbols of giving The Salvation Army Red Kettle. 6 THE SALVATION ARMY GREATER NEW YORK DIVISION
