If your definition includes compelling characters, a riveting plot and a satisfying ending, you ll find a few of them in our 2013 Annual Report. There s just one twist. They don t really end! Instead, because you demonstrated such compassion in the past year, the men and women you ll meet in the following pages have many exciting chapters ahead as God unfolds His plans for them. With His grace, they have overcome troubles you and I, thankfully, can only imagine. You had a hand in each of these stories and you re a vital part of ours here at The City Mission. Each meal, each night of shelter, each hand extended with the love of Christ is made possible by your generosity. I wish I could say with certainty that 2014 will bring more stability and security to Cleveland s neediest people. I do have hope and it s my prayer every day. But even if the tough times continue, I thank you for your partnership in serving our poor and homeless brothers and sisters. I wish you all the best in this new year. Psalm 127:3 Reaching Out With hope Many thanks for strengthening our community in 2013 by helping to: Serve 13,165 hot meals to hungry children and teens. Welcome 313 children and teens to club activities in a safe, wholesome environment with positive role models. Host 235 children and teens at day camps during the winter, spring and summer breaks.

5 As the needs of families and young people in our community and at Laura s Home grew in 2013, your support helped Pathways grow, adapt and meet those needs head-on.

5 5 As the needs of families and young people in our community and at Laura s Home grew in 2013, your support helped Pathways grow, adapt and meet those needs head-on. Some things didn t change at all: We awarded scholarships to 22 well-deserving high school graduates, many of whom were the first in their families to attend college. And our internship program gave 18 young men and women practical experience in urban ministry. What did change is helping Pathways extend our reach in the community: Our new partnership with Youth for Christ of Greater Cleveland provides expanded programs to middle and high school students affiliated with both YFC and Pathways. Conducted out of the Pathways building, these new programs are already impacting more young people than ever before. We also brought Pathways programs directly to the children of Laura s Home. For the first time, a resident youth worker is engaging these boys and girls in positive, life-affirming activities right on site. And our popular Music Connection has relocated to a central neighborhood church, giving students easier access to the program and increasing participation. Watch for more news and developments throughout 2014!

Your gifts helped to: Serve 56,382 hot, nourishing meals to hungry men. Provide 26,902 nights of shelter to homeless men. Support 827 homeless men by meeting basic needs and offering transformational programs.

7 I chose to come to The City Mission and thankfully, it was the right decision. In fact, to see Andre today, you would say it was the best decision he s made!

7 7 I chose to come to The City Mission and thankfully, it was the right decision. In fact, to see Andre today, you would say it was the best decision he s made! When Andre lost his job, just keeping money in his pocket was a struggle. I did what I had to do to survive, he says, and I got arrested. That was God telling me to slow down and make the right decision this time. By the grace of God, I got a chance to come to The City Mission. Andre wasn t sure what to expect when he arrived at the Mission, but was happy to learn about the culinary program. I like to cook, Andre says. I m going to learn the basics as well as the advanced stuff. It s an art form. Andre also appreciates the opportunity you gave him to encounter Jesus Christ. Going to chapel every day, church on Sunday, meetings it does draw you back to God. Today, Andre sees how much your gifts have helped him and other men at the Mission. You see a homeless person, but there s a story to that person, he says. There are a lot of guys who have been through the wringer in life and this is a place of refuge. It gives people a chance. It s a blessing for them and for the donors as well. Thanks to you, more men like Andre realized their potential in 2013 and continue to work toward fulfilling lives in Christ in the year ahead....blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. Reaching Out With Kindness Many thanks for comforting hurting women and children in 2013 at Laura s Home by: Serving 57,482 meals in a secure, welcoming environment. Providing 46,253 nights of safe shelter to women and children. Helping 608 women and 514 children find safety and a renewed sense of hope.

9 Wanda took her first drink at age 14 and the consequences followed her all through adulthood. She always thought she was doing fine, but eventually, she says, Everything just went down the drain.

9 9 Wanda took her first drink at age 14 and the consequences followed her all through adulthood. She always thought she was doing fine, but eventually, she says, Everything just went down the drain. She couldn t work enough hours to pay her rent and she had two young children to raise. I really had to get myself together for them, she says. Facing homelessness for the first time in her life, Wanda called Laura s Home. She joined the program and stepped out on the path to sobriety. Once she stopped drinking, Wanda says, I m doing the right things. I m a new Wanda. It s so wonderful to feel free! I m sober, I feel good. I never knew all these years that I needed to get help. I m glad that I came. Wanda s son and daughter are glad, too. At Laura s Home, they have plenty of activities to keep them occupied, including the Pathways after-school program. Today, Wanda is paying off her debt in the Living Free program and looks forward to living independently again. I m going to keep rising to the top, she says. I m strong! Much of Wanda s new-found strength comes from the classes your support helps to provide. They give you a lot of healing and encouragement, she says. 10 10 Inmate Outreach Services they loved me with a true christian love. Reaching Out With friendship Many thanks for donating Bibles and sharing the Gospel with prisoners through: 232 chapel services, Bible studies, and meetings that touched the lives of 4,763 men and women. 509 personal, one-on-one visits to men and women by our staff chaplains. 96 visits to prison facilities throughout Ohio. Monthly correspondence with more than 2,735 inmates.

11 11 Inever thought I would be in prison. I never thought I would be homeless. I never thought I would be in this much of a crisis, says Anastasia. But crushing depression had led to a suicide attempt and subsequent choices resulted in a prison term. While she was incarcerated, Anastasia s family and friends all abandoned her. Thanks to you, Anastasia found fellowship through The City Mission s Inmate Outreach Services. Monthly sessions with chaplains Nate and Brent helped her to open her heart to Christ and reach out for the support she so desperately needed. She learned about Laura s Home and asked if she would be welcome there. Brent looked at me with so much compassion, she remembers. He said, You are more than welcome. That was the first time I felt encouragement from someone outside the prison walls. Without Inmate Outreach Services, Anastasia says, I have no idea where I would be. They ve given me so much more than just a place to stay. They loved me with a true Christian love without expecting anything in return. Anastasia still struggles with depression, but your gifts provide her with the loving support she needs to keep moving forward. If I weren t here at Laura s Home, I don t think I d be making those strides. Your compassion throughout 2013 helped many incarcerated men and women look forward to a stable, productive life after prison. Look for more of Anastasia s story in the March issue of His Hands!

In 2013, 1,925 active City Mission volunteers and groups provided 25,816 hours of service, valued at over $551,432, to lift up the needy. We offer special thanks to the 129 first-time volunteers and groups who gave of themselves this year.

13 13 The most precious gifts The City Mission receives are those from former clients gifts of treasure or, in the case of Thomas Okulovich, the gift of time. Thomas stayed at the Mission for only a few weeks with his mother and younger brother when the family was temporarily homeless. But that time left a lasting, positive impression on the 10-year-old. He grew up to join the Marine Corps, only to be medically retired when he contracted Hodgkin Lymphoma. Thomas recovered but was unable to work. He had time on his hands and a heart for the poor. When his mother suggested he contact The City Mission, he checked it out and offered his services. Because his military training was in security, that s where Thomas started at the Mission. But he was open to any areas where he could be of service. Even if it s answering phones or doing data processing, it s more purposeful and rewarding in my life as a Christian than if I were to be making money and pursuing a job for myself, he says. To those considering giving of their time, Thomas says, Don t do it for any other reason except for Christ. It s not to make yourself feel better about doing something for the homeless. It s about your love for Christ; that s what motivates me every morning to come here. I want to help His own that are in need. See our full range of volunteer opportunities at

14 internships serving kids, serving christ When Brittany Kimlingen came to Laura s Home as an intern, she hoped to make it more of a career than a stopping point.

14 14 internships serving kids, serving christ When Brittany Kimlingen came to Laura s Home as an intern, she hoped to make it more of a career than a stopping point. Today, as The City Mission s Youth Program Supervisor, it seems her prayer was answered! Brittany is actively involved in bringing the Pathways programs to the boys and girls at Laura s Home. It s meeting their immediate needs, socially, academically, recreationally and spiritually, she says. The unique aspect of having the program onsite, says Brittany, is that it has an impact not just on the children, but on the family. Having ministry there every day, that s consistent and centered in Christ, will help (the children) break the cycle of poverty and have successful, fulfilling lives. Brittany says it s also great for the mothers as they learn to build healthy family relationships. Every month, activities are based on a common theme, like compassion or gratitude. One month, children made cards to take to a local nursing home. It was cool to see the kids get excited about doing something for somebody else, Brittany says. Moving forward, Brittany would like to see more mentoring, more servicerelated projects and a program based on father absence issues. In the meantime, says Brittany, the best way you can continue to help is by coming and giving your time and your prayers.
