Congratulations to Randy and Holly Kelderman with the birth of their son Jett Owen. Next Sunday we will witness the baptism of Kaden Li Bryan son of Russ and Kendra Bryan at the 11:00 a.m. service. Pastor Sheldon will be on vacation from this week Wednesday through next Tuesday. OUR CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS: UTH STUFF UTH Group kickoff will be Wednesday, September 3 at Kiwanis Park. You may show up anytime between 6:30 and 7:00 pm. We will eat in the park and will end up at the Youth House to go over a few important things. Please plan to attend. On Wednesday, September 10 Calvary UTH will host a Parent s Night. This is a night for you to receive information, ask questions, see what a typical UTH night looks like and meet the leaders. It will only last an hour. Please plan to attend! 2

3 THURSDAY NIGHT ALIVE: Everyone is cordially invited to join the Thursday Night Alive Bible study as we begin our season this Thursday, September 4. We will be having a kick-off night of good food, games, lots of fun and fellowship, starting at 6:30 at the Calvary Youth House. We will dine on pizza (Dutch treat), dessert and drink will be furnished. All singles, couples and new members of Calvary are invited to join us. Questions? In the evening the sermon will be from Lord s Day #8 and Deuteronomy 6:1-4, God in Three Persons. CALLING ALL SOFTBALL PLAYERS: The annual PCGS Softball Marathon fundraiser will be held on Friday, September 5 through Saturday, September 6. We re looking for a fun-loving, hearty, early rising group of 9-15 players to play at 5:00 a.m. (yes, we were able to secure the best time slot again this year!) on Saturday morning (September 6). The only requirement is you must be 13 or older. A signup sheet is located on the Welcome Center Please sign up if you re interested in playing. Our manager this year is Kevin Bolt you may contact him or Brad Jungling with questions. Training camp will start soon! ALL GIRLS IN GRADES 3 8 are invited to join us for an exciting year of GEMS! We will start the year off with a Father or Special Guest/Daughter Night on Wednesday, September 10. Watch for more details about that night next week. Then, on September 17, be ready to lace up your shoes as we introduce you to this year's theme, "Walk the Micah Road". If you have a friend or know of someone who does not belong to a GEMS club, be sure to extend this invitation to them to join us for the year. It will be a fun, uplifting and inspiring one. We look forward to seeing you at GEMS! EXPERIENCE GLORIOUS FREEDOM EXPERIENCE THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE! Join us this fall as we study Beth Moore s, Living Beyond Yourself. This 11 week Bible study for women will lead us in an in-depth study of the fruit of the Spirit. We are offering two sessions: Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m., beginning September 10, and Thursday mornings from 9:00-11:00 a.m., beginning September 11. To register, sign up at the welcome center or call Bev at Books are available at Gosselink's for $ ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES: This fall we will be offering four adult education classes. Adult Education Classes will begin on Sunday, September, 14 at 10:00 a.m. You can sign up for the following classes at the Welcome Center. Christianity 101 A Course in Christian Discipleship led by Pastor Art: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to help a new Christian understand his or her faith in a deeper way? Have you ever wondered if you could be a person to help disciple a new believer? If these are questions that pique your curiosity, then please plan to attend Pastor Art s class this September called Christianity 101. The class is material that he personally has created and put into a booklet form. Pastor Art, during the Sunday s of September, will lead the class participants through the material so that they can understand Christian discipleship better and can be equipped to disciple a new believers. "Don't Waste Your Life", based on the book by John Piper led by Pastor Sheldon: Most people slip by in life without a passion for God, spending their lives on trivial diversions, living for comfort and pleasure, and perhaps trying to avoid sin. This class will warn us not to get caught up in a life that counts for nothing. It will challenge us to live and die boasting in the cross of Christ and making the glory of God our singular passion. The participant's guide will suggest daily readings from John Piper's book, Don't Waste Your Life, and will ask a few reflection questions to be answered between class sessions. Network - Spiritual Gifts Class led by Del Zuidema: Helps Christians understand who God has uniquely made them to be and mobilize them to a place of meaningful service in the local church. Each participant in Network will work through a series of assessments which leads them to discover their unique blend of spiritual gifts, personal style, and ministry passion. Loving Justice led by Randy & Brenda Nugteren: God is loving and powerful. He is able to work against some of the strongest forces of hate in the world. We can imitate God's justice by fighting against these same powers in our own lives. These studies will show how God wants us to love justice too. Topics we'll explore include: caring for our enemies, temptation of materialism, and prejudice. We'll also look at how these issues are being addressed by the presidential candidates.

4 CALVARY MISSION CIRCLE is planning to hold its first meeting on Wednesday, September 10, at Stoney Point. We will enjoy the beauty of God s Creation while studying our regular Bible Lesson. This lesson is Genesis 16-18:3, Lesson 8 in the booklet. We will leave from the church at 11:00 using the church van. Each member is asked to bring a small salad for our noon meal. Sandwiches, dessert and drink will be furnished. Guests are welcome. THE FIRST MEETING of the Calvary Book Discussion Group will be September 16. Morrie Blankenspoor will lead the discussion on the book Huckleberry Finn. Please call Dorothy Van Kooten if you do not want a book. THE CALVARY CADET CLUB will begin their season on Wednesday night, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cadet shop. We ask that all parents please see a counselor as they drop off their boy, as we have a permission form to sign this year. The fall campout will be Friday night and Saturday morning, Sept ember We ask that the boys bring a bike helmet and a Frisbee if they have one. The activities will be rappelling and Frisbee golf. We would like to invite any interested fathers to come out for Friday evening dinner and activities. If you wish to attend, please let us know on Wednesday, so we can get enough food. If you have any questions, call Tim Schut at in the evening. CALVARY EDUCATION FUND (please note change in dates): There will be two opportunities to sign up for participation in the Calvary Education Fund (Calvary Covenantal Plan) for the school year. The first will be Wednesday, September 17 from 7-9 p.m. in the Council Room and the second will be Sunday, September 21 at 10 a.m. in the Gathering Place. MEALS ON WHEELS: Calvary Church has been asked to deliver Meals on Wheels on Monday, September 22, and Monday September 29. We need 6 volunteers. However it works well if 2 people take each route so one can deliver while the other one drives. Plan to pick up the meals at 10:00 at the Community Center. Please sign up at the Welcome Center. SEVERAL PEOPLE have already been graciously offering to help Josh and Katie Branderhorst after the birth of their triplets. They very much appreciate these offers and want the congregation to know that a sign up sheet for volunteers to help them will be available at the Welcome Center starting in the beginning of October. Their thoughts at this time are that family members will help initially after the triplet's are born, and they would appreciate help from the congregation beginning around November 1st. Thanks in advance for your willingness to help. NEW BABY: We would like to celebrate with Chandra Van Wyk, who had a baby girl on July 3. Since Chandra lives in Ames, and is busy on weekends, we would like to throw her a CARD SHOWER. Please shower her with cards, and if you want to include checks or gift certificates, all the better. Would you consider helping out in the morning Coffee Break nursery once a month (or more)? We have a great need for helpers in the toddler nursery. IMMEDIATE NEED FOR A STORY HOUR PROGRAM COORDINATOR for Tuesday morning Coffee Break. Story Hour is the program for 3, 4, and 5 year old children, while their mothers are in Bible Study. A COPY of our worship service media is available in the library. If you are shut in and would like to receive a DVD/Video copy of our worship service in your home on a weekly basis, please contact Christy Van Zee, CALVARY IS SCHEDULED to lead the service at Bethel Mission in Des Moines on Tuesday, October 7. 5 A.C.T.S. This is probably one of the most-used and bestknown prayer formats. The acronym serves as an outline for structuring prayer. A The first part of prayer is adoration. We offer praise for who God is, for what God has done, and for what God has yet to do. C Adoration is followed by confession. We acknowledge our sins and our need for God s forgiveness. Our confession must be open, honest, and specific. T Next is thanksgiving. We thank God for his goodness and for his answers to our prayers. S Finally comes supplication, where we lay both the needs of others and our needs before God. Need a quiet place to pray? It will be held on Monday, September 1 from 7 10 am. Freewill donations will be accepted. MARK YOUR CALENDARS: The annual PCGS Softball Marathon fundraiser will be held on Friday, September 5 through Saturday, September 6 at Caldwell Park in Pella. This event has become a wonderful tradition of community building and fun for all ages. Please come out and enjoy some entertainment, good food and good company any time from 5:00 p.m. on Friday until 5:00p.m. on Saturday. Last year over $70,000 was raised to help offset the cost of tuition for Pella Christian Grade School families! YOU ARE INVITED to join the Gospel Singers Male Chorus for our season.
