HOW LINCOLN COPED It is commonly known that Abraham Lincoln occasionally struggled with depression. He had reason for bouts with melancholy. He lost his mother as a youth, he had little formal education, he lost several elections, he was hated by many and thought to be a fool by others. When he was a young man, he considered suicide at least twice - once at age 26 and again when he was 32. Lincoln once wrote: "I am now the most miserable man living." How did he cope? He found a good deal of help through humor. He sought out hilarious anecdotes, "down-home" funny stories and tales of the bizarre, and he laughed while telling them to others. Lincoln knew that "A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones" (Proverbs 17:22, NRSV). Lincoln's faith in God also helped. A firm believer in God, he was a man of prayer and public worship. He attended the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, where a plaque now designates the pew on which he sat. When Lincoln's son Willie died, a Mrs. Pomeroy told him that many Christians were praying for him. Lincoln replied, "I am glad to hear that. I need their prayers." Then he continued, "I will try to go to God with my sorrow." Upon Lincoln's death, General William Sherman said, "Of all the men I ever met, he seemed to possess more of the elements of greatness, combined with goodness, than any other." TITHING IS A GIFT OF LOVE It is important to remember that tithing is an attitude of giving. The amount you give or how it compares to the gifts of others doesn t really matter. What matters is that when you give, you give of yourself, all your loving concern, your affirmation of devotion to God, your good will to humankind, and your service to Christ. When you give with this spirit, then you are giving the fullest capacity of your spiritual, physical and mental resources. A true gift is a portion of your self. When you give in this manner, you become an instrument of God. It is the gift of love. 5

6 FROM THE CONSISTORY: In an effort to evaluate the progress toward the goals that prompted the change to two morning services, the Consistory will be asking the congregation to fill out a short questionnaire. A preview of that questionnaire is printed below for you to study throughout this week. Copies of the questionnaire will be handed out by the ushers to high school and older Calvary members during the morning services of Sunday, February 25. A few minutes will be given at the end of each service for you to fill out your answers. People will be collecting the questionnaires as you exit the sanctuary. If you need more time to fill out the questionnaire or write comments, you may take it home, but kindly return it by that evening to the Welcome Center. Calvary Congregational Questionnaire Please circle appropriate age group: Grade 9 Age Answer the following questions by circling one of the numbers to indicate your personal opinion: 1 = Yes 2 = I am leaning toward yes 3 = I am unsure 4 = I am leaning toward no 5 = No Has the rationale for two morning services been explained well enough? Do you have a positive attitude about the change to two morning services? Are the morning worship start times appropriate? Have you observed an increase in visitors due to the change to two morning services? Has going to two morning services provided a more welcoming atmosphere for inviting guests and visitors to worship at Calvary? Have you personally invited an unchurched person to attend worship at Calvary? Does Calvary Church encourage and assist you in reaching out to members of our community? Does the leadership of Calvary Church demonstrate by example that outreach is a priority? Please use the other side of this sheet to express any additional comments. 6
