1 United Methodist Women Sunday October 30th We have much to celebrate on UMW Sunday, so we hope you will join us in worship on October 30 th! Salem will be welcoming a special speaker, Lisa Jones. Lisa is a Certified Lay Servant and Speaker from Brown Deer United Methodist Church. She has been actively involved at Brown Deer as Sunday School teacher/superintendent, Nurture Ministry Leader, member of Church Council, UMW President, youth leader, and other ministries. Lisa is a candidate for Certified Lay Minister, and has received training as a church planter. She is also involved in the district as a member of District Strategy team, District Committee on Ministry (DCOM), and the conference Nominations Committee. In her most recent role she was the Community Developer for Summerfield UMC. Lisa s ministry focus is Milwaukee, and she considers herself a missionary to Milwaukee with a missional focus on those not in the pews, the broken hearted, unchurched or de-churched. Her focus for ministry includes poverty, mass incarceration, rebuilding relations between the community and police, and human trafficking. Lisa considers her most important role to be a mother to her 23 year old daughter, Jasmine Jones. Plan to celebrate with us as we welcome Lisa Jones! Lisa will stay after church and talk with us informally over coffee and brunch. If you are planning on attending the brunch, please speak with Betty Henderson or Harriet Young as soon as possible so that they can plan accordingly! Salem Annual Charge Conference Salem United Methodist Church will be holding its annual Charge Conference on Monday, November 21 st at 7:30 pm. Presiding Elder will be Rev. Pray for the Churches in our District As a church in the Southeast District of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church, we have been asked to pray for specific churches and clergy at a given time throughout the year. Here are the following churches on the prayer list for November 2016: Nov. 7-13: Racine Evangelical UMC, Pastor Creighton Kaye, 676 members. Nov : First UMC in Racine, Pastor Jakes Sei Nov : Voker, 147 members. Trinity UMC in Racine (159 members) & Faith UMC in Racine (51 members), Pastor Don Francis. Nov. 28-Dec. 4: Salem UMC in Salem, Wisconsin, Pastor Keith Hewitt, 109 members. From Our Church Treasurer I have assumed the co-treasurer position previously held by David Feller. The Finance Committee extends a huge THANK YOU to David for his years of service. Be sure to thank him. I will be keeping you updated in the Sunday announcements and in the Tidings on our finances, along with some "Did You Know?" facts about our finances. Feel free to contact any finance team member or myself with any questions you may have or information you would like to see. Currently, for the year our financial situation is solid with income staying ahead of expenses. Though our checking account has a healthy balance, we must remember that much of that is actually funds dedicated to specific activities, purposes, and funds, such as the Food Pantry, individual groups, and designated giving. As of October 1, operating funds, those actually available to pay operating expenses, are at about $8000. For comparisons, our September expenses were $15,000+. Our apportionment payments are current through September. -Kermit Bohning DID YOU KNOW? So far this year, Salem has distributed the following designated giving: Food Pantry $1, Paul Webster $1, Native American Ministries $ Human Relations Sunday $25.00 UMCOR Disaster Relief $ One Great Hour of Sharing $440.00
3 An Update on Imagine No Malaria As of mid-august, the Wisconsin Conference s total giving to Imagine No Malaria was $1,033,612.80! Gifts from every one of the 460 churches throughout the Wisconsin Annual Conference were received. Gifts ranged from $5.00 to $60, and have made a significant difference in reducing the number of deaths by malaria. In 2008, a child died every 30 seconds. Now that rate has diminished to one every 2 minutes. You have made a difference! Thank you Salem for your part in this Ministry! Christmas is Around the Corner! Salem is adopting three families in need from the Christmas Clearing Council of Waukesha County. This organization has been serving children of Waukesha County since Many in Waukesha are desperately struggling due to unexpected job loss, death of a wage earner, divorce or abandonment, illness, disability, or other crisis. The Giving Tree will be going up in November, and we are counting on Salem s generous support to assist these three families in need during this Christmas season. We are grateful of the past outpouring from Salem. Please consider taking an ornament off the tree again this year and help bring the joy of Christmas to a needy family in Waukesha. Hope Center Thanksgiving Dinner & Auction This 18th Annual Fundraising event will be held on Thursday, November 17th at the Country Springs Hotel in Pewaukee. The night includes a gala dinner, silent and live auctions, raffles, and games. Hope Center has experienced an ever increasing number of clients coming to them for help. To that end, each year, Hope Center, holds its annual Hope Thanksgiving Dinner and Auction, which is a fundraiser for Hope Center programs that help the less fortunate in Waukesha County. For more information and tickets please visit hopecenterwi.org. Interfaith Holiday Giving This is Interfaith Senior Programs 12th year of hosting the Holiday Giving Program. This program provides a self-sufficiency care package to up to 500 low-income seniors and adults with disabilities living in Waukesha County. To receive a package, recipients must be referred through an agency (such as Interfaith, the ADRC or Waukesha Food Pantry), be low-income and have little to no family support in town. For many of the recipients, this is the only present they will receive this holiday season. Care packages include gift cards to the grocery store and pharmacy, postage stamps, gripper socks, personal care items, and handmade gifts like ornaments and door hangers. Salem s Outreach Ministry team will be collecting gift cards and postage stamps for this program during November. Watch for more information coming soon! Advent Study 2016 Down to Earth: The Hopes and Fears of all the Years Are Met in Thee Tonight Tuesdays at Noon (Soup lunch) Tuesdays at 6:30 pm (Soup supper) Nov.29, Dec. 6, 13, and 20 More than 2,000 years ago a baby was born in a backwater village of the Roman Empire - and the world was changed forever! In this 4-week Advent study, using the new book by Mike Slaughter (Down to Earth), we will explore the extraordinary story of how the Son of God chose to become a lowly human - and challenged us to respond with down-to-earth love, humility, lifestyle, and obedience. To ensure you get your book in time for the study, sign up on the poster in the narthex by Sunday, November 20th! Book cost is $10.00
4 Children in Church Saturday, December 3, 10:00 am - Noon Our Nurture and Evangelism teams are proud to bring back this event in honor of its past director, our beloved Sandy Tonz, who always did such a terrific job organizing and putting it on to the delight of many children and adults. Please join us for a pancake breakfast, including music, story time, a craft, and of course a visit and photo with Santa! Donation is $6.00 per person, and it is free for children under 2 years old. Please reserve seats no later than Saturday, Nov. 26 by signing up on the display in the narthex. Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 4! Come and find out what the real meaning of Christmas" is all about, on Sunday December 4th, as the children from Salem Church School perform, "A Charlie Brown Christmas"! They will present their performance during our 9:00 A.M. worship service. Join the cast members after the service in the Narthex where the Nurture Team will be providing refreshments. A little boy was in a relative's wedding. As he was coming down the aisle, he would take two steps, stop, and turn to the crowd. While facing the crowd, he would put his hands up like claws and roar. So it went, step, step, ROAR, step, step, ROAR, all the way down the aisle. As you can imagine, the crowd was near tears from laughing so hard by the time he reached the pulpit. When asked what he was doing, the child sniffed and said, "I was being the Ring Bear." A little four-year old girl prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets." A little boy was overheard praying: "Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time the way I am." A Sunday School teacher asked her little children, as they were on the way to church service, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?" One bright little girl replied, "Because people are sleeping." ****** Six-year old Angie, and her four-year old brother, Joel, were sitting together in church. Joel giggled, sang and talked out loud. Finally, his big sister had enough and said, "You're not supposed to talk out loud in church!" Joel responded, "Why? Who's going to stop me?" Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, "See those two men standing by the door? They're hushers." My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo, while I asked, "No, how are we alike?" My grandson replied, "You're both old." A ten-year old, under the tutelage of her grandmother, was becoming quite knowledgeable about the Bible. Then, one day, she floored her grandmother by asking, "Which Virgin was the mother of Jesus? The virgin Mary or the King James Virgin?" A Sunday school class was studying the Ten Commandments. They were ready to discuss the last one. The teacher asked if anyone could tell her what it was. Susie raised her hand, stood tall, and quoted, "Thou shall not take the covers off the neighbor's wife."
