1 Contemporary Praise Worship Service The 1st Wednesday of our Summer Months (June 1, July 6, and August 6:30 pm Also, mark your calendars for Saturday, September 10, for our Outdoor Praise Worship at 6:00 pm! Pastor Jorge to Teach at Garrett Pastor Jorge will be teaching the Course of Study at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois from July and He will be available by cell phone at (262) or by to: pj@salemonthehill.org Pastor Jorge will be at Salem to preach on both Sunday, July 24 th and July 31 st. Ingathering Project Due to Salem s generosity we were able to send a check of $ to purchase personal dignity kits for those in need. These kits are sometimes sent around the world, but more often just around the corner to our U.S. neighbors. Due to the purchasing power of the Midwest Distribution Center in Chatham, IL, Salem will be able to supply 380 kits bringing support and hope to disaster victims. Thank you, Salem! Pray for the Churches in our District As a church in the Southeast District of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church, we have been asked to pray for specific churches and clergy at a given time throughout the year. (Salem will be on the list in the future.) Here are the following churches on the prayer list for June 2016: June: 27- July 3: Fe Hispanic Ministry in Milwaukee, Pastor Ada Rosado, and their 27 members. July: 4-10: Milwaukee: Kenwood UMC in Milwaukee, Pastor Dawn Helton-Anishinaabeqwa, their 142 members. July: 11-17: Luz a las Naciones UMC in Milwaukee, Pastor Erendira Serrata, and their 62 members. July: 18-24: Solomon Community Temple in Milwaukee, Pastor Afi Dobbins, and their 36 members. July: 25-31: Summerfield UMC in Milwaukee, Pastor Jennifer Emert, their 47 members. Have You Heard?? We are a church family and enjoy hearing these tidbits of wonderful news! If you have a photo, please that to the church office also (office@salemonthehill.org) and we ll include it. Spiritual Progress(ive) Dinner Food for the Spirit and Soul Thursdays, July 14 & 28, August 11 & 25 at 5:30 pm From the Spiritual Growth Team. You are invited to an informal discussion about how we at Salem Methodist Church can apply the Lord and His Word to everyday life situations. We will be discussing multicultural issues such as: Race Relationship, Immigration Issues, the Bible and Human Sexuality, and how we as Christians can use our unwavering faith to spread our love as well as embrace God-Rooted living. Please join us at a potluck on Thursdays, July 14 & 28, August 11 & 25th at 5:30 pm for appetizers, shortly followed by dinner and dialogue. We are looking for hosts! If you would like to host one of these evenings, please sign up on the kiosk in the narthex. Here is the schedule: July 14, Race Relationships July 28, Immigration Issues August 11, The Bible and Human Sexuality August 25, Sharing our Faith and Embracing God-Rooted Living
2 Volunteer Drivers Wanted: Each week, 5 to 10 Interfaith clients cannot get to the grocery store or medical appointment due to a shortage of volunteer drivers. With help from a just a few more individuals, we can ensure these seniors and adults with disabilities needing transportation will have this basic need met. Volunteer drivers are never locked into a schedule, but can choose the day, time and area they wish to drive in. Interfaith can share information about excess auto insurance coverage, mileage reimbursement and more. Contact Anna at (262) for more details. Three Hours or Less a Month: A person in the beginning stages of dementia is in need of a volunteer to attend Interfaith s new program, Spark! Air. This is a program for people in the beginning to middle stages of memory loss (and their caregiver). Some of these participants do not have a full time caregiver and they need a friendly individual to attend the programs with. We need volunteers to drive the participant to and from the event and partner with the participant during the program. As a partner, you will partake in a variety of artistic activities like painting, beading, storytelling with your participant. Spark! Air programs occur on the third Thursday of each month from 3:00 to 4:30pm in various locations in Waukesha County. School is out for summer, but hunger doesn't take a vacation... School is out, and while children are on vacation for summer, hunger does not take a vacation. Many children lose access to school provided meals, and families have to adjust their food budgets as childcare costs increase. Research has shown that poverty can impact a child's health throughout their life. Addressing the issue early and intervening as soon as possible eliminates those negative effects. The Food Pantry of Waukesha County is dedicated to addressing hunger and ensuring that every child in our community has access to nutritious foods to help them develop. Over 3,000 children are served every year through our Grocery Distribution and Weekend Backpack Program, giving families the food necessary to ensure their children are healthy and happy. Waukesha Food Pantry s 2 nd Annual FUEL UP July 30, 12:00-4:00 pm Last year the Food Pantry of Waukesha County invited the community to enjoy a selection of tasty foods provided by various food trucks all in an effort to support our mission. Join them this year on Saturday, July 30th to sample some delicious foods. The event benefits the Food Pantry of Waukesha County programming. Thank you for your support, Salem! Come support Pastor Jorge & Kurt Guenther s SENIOR SOFTBALL TEAM! As you may have heard, Pastor Jorge & Kurt are teammates again (Assistant manager Kurt traded for him in draft for the 3rd straight year). Their team are defending champs, and are currently 2-1 and tied for first place again! They would love to have you come out and watching them play. The games are Tuesday mornings at 9:30 or 10:45 am (see schedule posted on the kiosk) at 35th & Burnham St. in Milwaukee. Look for the team in the orange jerseys. Ask or call Kurt for details, ANNUAL CHURCH PICNIC: Sunday, August 21 Get ready for some fun on Casual Sunday, August 21st! Following the 9 a.m. service, we'll gather outside (weather permitting, of course) for games, food and lively conversation. We'll bring the hot dogs and fixin's, along with beverages. Come wearing your jeans or shorts and bring a dish to pass (salad, hot dish, fruit or dessert would be good). Feel free to bring a favorite outdoor or indoor game. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the narthex so we know how many tables will be needed. See y'all then!
3 Fan Yourself. When it is hot, we fan ourselves to stir up the air. We feel cooler with a breeze hitting our faces. Just that little bit of air can revive you when it is hot. Allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us can revive us too. When we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us it will strengthen us and give us that boost we need: "That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit." Ephesians 3:16 Beat the Heat! A summer devotional by Julia Bettencourt There are always things we can do though to cool off from the summer heat. The heat of the world can beat down on us too. We've got to protect ourselves from it. Here are a few ways to beat the heat! Spend Time in the Shade. One of the first things we can do if we are outside and it is hot is to get into the shade. As Christians the best place to spend time in the shade is to spend time with the Lord in prayer and praise. We need to just sit at His feet and talk to Him. When we are there up close to the Lord it cools us down. The Lord protects us: "The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. Psalm 121:5 Hydrate. The next thing to do to cool off is to stay hydrated. We need to drink in lots of water. Here we are with all that heat of the world beating down on us, and it takes so much out of us. It dries us out. What better way to quench our thirst than by reading and studying the Word of God? We need to memorize it and really reflect on it for a while: "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is." Psalm 63:1 Slow Down. When we are out in that heat just slowing down a little can help keep the sun from draining us. As Christians, we have to take the time to slow down and think before we get into trouble with our tongue and our actions. We don't want to become hot-headed: "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." James 1:19 Conclusion: We have all seen on the news what can happen when careless people leave their pets or even their children in extreme heat in a car. We cringe and wonder how anyone in their right mind could do that, but how careless are we with our lives? Do we expose ourselves to the extreme heat of sin? I know I need to get in and cool out in the shade. I need to stay close to the Lord more; be refreshed with His word and allow the Lord to lead. I need that cooling off and lifting up that only Christ can give. So, what are you doing to beat the heat? A very heartfelt thank you to my Salem family for such a nice reception on June 5th. I also thank you for the beautiful cross and monetary gift. You made me feel truly special and each of you has played a part in my life and future ministry. -Marie Broege A Summer Prayer Long warm days The pace of life slows A time for picnics and rest in the shade Lord, help me to rest awhile in the cooling shade of your presence. Slow down my restless heart and fill me with gentle compassion for all people. Amen
4 Summer around Salem We are grateful to those of you who take such loving care of our grounds, foundation plantings, and flower beds at Salem. Thank you!
