2 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST June 3, 2018 Fr. Mark s Remarks Congratulations to Deacon John Marchiorlatti who will be ordained a priest for our diocese on Saturday, June 9 at St. Mary Cathedral at 10:30am. The future Father John claims St. John Church & Student Center as his home and he will preside at a Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June 10 at Noon at St. John. Everyone is cordially invited to both. He grew up in East Grand Rapids, MI and St. Paul the Apostle parish. John says apart from his mother and father two other people that were influential in his decision were two of his pastors and the example of other holy, kind, and gentle priests. In high school he took 12 varsity letters in cross country, wrestling, and track. He attended the University of Michigan and earned dual degrees in economics and theatre. He attended St. Mary Student Parish in his undergraduate years. John then attended Carnegie Mellon University and the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management. While there, he attended St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA and the Newman Center there. For my mother, I could that see the most important thing in her life was her Catholic faith and this too was the very same thing that I cared most about. His mother was a long term cancer survivor. For about 30 years she would be on and off rounds of chemotherapy to keep the cancer at bay. From her I witnessed what redemptive suffering looks like. Heidelberg, Germany. I would walk around the base praying either the rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet. It was there that he encountered a priest who asked him if he ever considered priesthood. Before going to Germany I was planning to go to Hawaii and work with the Pacific Command. But the Lord had other plans. While in the process of discerning whether I should apply to seminary and looking for a home diocese, I returned to Michigan when my father had a stroke and was in poor health and my mother s cancer was finally getting the better of her. My mother died while I was in the process of applying to the seminary. John did enter Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit where he received his Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained a deacon at St. Thomas Aquinas in East Lansing last year. John did his Internship Year at St. Francis of Assisi parish in Ann Arbor and will be assigned after priesthood ordination to St. John Parish in Davison, MI. I want to thank John for sharing his road to the priesthood with me and allowing me to share it with you. I hope you can join Fathers Gary, Ryan, Jerry, and myself in celebrating his ordination and/or first Mass. Fr. Jim Lothamer will be the homilist at Father John s Noon Mass at St. John Church & Student Center. Keep Father John Marchiorlatti in your prayers this week. Have a blessed week! John entered Thomas Cooley Law School for his J.D. While in Lansing, he attended his adopted home parish St. Thomas Aquinas/St. John Church & Student Center in East Lansing. This is when I got to know John. It was here that he was surrounded by a faith community and lively student group that helped him to be more courageous and willing to follow God s call. Father Joe Krupp also had an influence on him while he was here and we both helped him to be more open to the prompting of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of the Blessed Mother. Before entering seminary he worked for the U.S. Army Office of the Judge Advocate, European Command in 2 Prayers for Priests June Calendar Don t forget to pick up a copy of the June Prayers for Priests calendar. This month several of STA/SJSC past Priests are included such as Fr. Jim Lothamer (June 5), Fr. Michael O Brien (June 17), and Msgr. Michael Murphy (June 28), to list a few.
3 Faith Sharing Questions for Next Sunday s Gospel Are You Registered as a St. Thomas Aquinas/St. John Church & Student Center Parishioner? 5 Rite of Christian Initiation Of Adults Update This Sunday the catechumens, candidates, and their sponsors gathered to consider the topic, "Jesus, the Good Shepherd. The metaphor of the Good Shepherd helps us understand the close relationship each of us has with Jesus. He is the good shepherd who has laid down his life for us, his flock. He offers us a relationship of trust, safety, and life. As Jesus' disciples, we are challenged to become shepherds for others through a life of service. June 21 is the start of our new summer series (previously named Third Thursdays) now called FUN IN THE SON! 6:00-8:00pm in Fr. Mac Hall. You will be fed, will have fun, will meet staff members, and make new friends with those in attendance. If you are new to the parish in the past few years, PLEASE come and be welcomed by those who have called this large parish home for many years. Children are WELCOME so bring the family! This past Tuesday and this Sunday the inquirers and their sponsors continued their consideration about God by exploring what the bible says about him. They learned that God cannot keep his goodness to himself but shares it through the wonder of creation, including the creation of each of us. God wants to enter into a relationship with each of us. God has redeemed us. He loves us with the tenderness of a mother. God wants to dwell with us. (John 14: 23) P.S. All those who came to the Third Thursdays in the past, please come to the new FUN IN THE SON! as you know how much fun we had. Advance signup is needed for the food. 7 High School Summer Youth Group starts Wednesday, June 6, 6:00-8:00pm Summer Youth Group is open to all students who will be in 9th grade to just graduated in the school year! Our summer youth program is one of my favorite things to do here, and all the students who participate agree. We'll meet weekly around a meal to discuss topics, go on trips (a trip to my dad's dairy farm in Fowler, MI, eat in downtown East Lansing, etc.), have fun, and grow in community. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. Request for donations towards Steubenville and LEAD This year, we are excited to have our largest group in a long time going to Steubenville (June 29-July 1) - 36 spots! We also have one student participating in the LEAD program, which is a week long retreat before the conference focused on leadership and discipleship. I attended both retreats when I was in high school, and they were both absolutely essential in my formation to the man I am today. Many of our students have had profound experiences at Steubenville conferences in the past. These retreats are fairly expensive ($325 per student), and we are seeking donations to help offset this cost, especially for students who have requested scholarship money to cover their retreat cost. jhamilton@elcatholics.org with questions.
