ST. LOUISE DE MARILLAC PARISH COMMUNITY Living The Gospel. { Together } PASTORAL & FINANCIAL REPORT JULY JUNE 2014 OUR PARISH MISSION: St. Louise de Marillac is a Roman Catholic community called together as a family to worship, to minister, and to evangelize. As true disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to renew His love and spirit by sharing our time, talent, and treasure. REASONS TO GIVE THANKS 5,181 Registered Families 1,645 Stewardship Families Donate to Weekly Offertory 52 Ministries 750+ Adult & Youth Volunteers 15,256+ Volunteer Hours 1,425 Events & Activities Hosted 2 Priests 3 Deacons 1,012 Masses+ * * Not including weddings & funerals Pastor s Message A Disciple s Heart Brothers & Sisters, The Pastoral & Financial Report for the fiscal year is an incredible testament to God s work through you in the building of His Kingdom. The information on each page reflects the prayers, work, generosity and faith of so many people. The talents, gifts, and financial resources that you so generously give toward achieving our goal of sharing God s love is amazing. This report is our way of saying thank you and celebrating all that you have accomplished in the name of Christ! It gives me great joy to see the dedication and greater good accomplished by our community. But there is more to be done. In 2015, we will begin the first projects of our Living Our Faith Campaign. Our prayer is that the restoration of our sacred worship space will ignite our hearts on fire for God and in service to each other - creating a parish community even more dedicated to accomplishing great things in the name of our Savior. Would you take 10 minutes and look at this report? Review it with a heart full of gratitude to God for His many blessings, and prayerfully consider again...were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us? this year, What does God want to do through me to joyfully accomplish His will? May we all seek to be the hands and face of Christ, for each other and to our community. In this way we will truly have a Disciple s Heart. Yours In Christ, Fr. Robert Fulton, Pastor Luke 24: E. Covina Boulevard Covina, (626)
The Church I See... The Church I See is equipping and sending ordinary people to live extraordinary lives; The Church I See is filled with a people who are united, praying, and full of the Holy Spirit; Pastoral Council Jim Gilroy, Moderator Complying with the guidelines established by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, St. Louise de Marillac Pastoral Council serves the Pastor and the members of the parish. As a group of dedicated volunteers, our primary functions are to investigate pastoral matters, to consider them thoroughly and to propose practical conclusions regarding them. Our Council consists of parishioners of diverse backgrounds allowing us to offer unique and varying opinions on the matters presented - yet working in harmony providing recommendations with one strong voice. Each task presented to the Council is studied, reflected upon and a conclusion is recommended to the Pastor to show how the Council feels he should act upon the matter. The Council acts in a consultative capacity only and does not implement any of its recommendations. As Moderator, I am proud of the work accomplished by this Council. With much time spent writing, discussing and reflecting on the documents which form the foundation and guidelines by which we function, we can operate effectively and in the best interests of the parish. The Council has studied and recommended action on many issues, including our capital campaign, facility renovations and spiritual and social issues which impact the mission of our parish. Looking to the future our goals are to increase spirituality throughout our St. Louise family and to inspire each of us to take active, expanded roles within our community, through fellowship, and a renewed faith. It is an exciting time to be a part of the St. Louise family, and we look forward to how God will work through each of us to accomplish His mission. Our Pastoral Council provides pastoral leadership and counsel to the Pastor on behalf of our parish family. Volunteers currently serving on the Council: Walt Allen, Rosa Celera, Mary Noel Cunningham, Linda Ekeomodi, Jim Gilroy, Glen Golden, Rose Joyner, Brian Lee, Mary Grace Lima, Gary Philip, Perry Rivera, & Sandy Verdegem Ex-Officio: Ray Elder, Business Manager The Church I See joyfully and generously serves and meets the needs of the hurting; The Church I See is committed to raising, training and empowering the next generation of Catholics; The Church I See respects and loves the individual right where they re at, providing the sacraments for their spiritual nourishment and growth; Yes, the Church I see could very well be our Church St. Louise de Marillac 452 Adoration Hours hours we have spent before the Blessed Sacrament 101 Baptisms 141 First Communions 107 Confirmations 12 Marriages 7 RCIA - Adults in Formation 5 Quinceaneras TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION 490 Faith Formation Students Elementary & High School 138 Summer Bible Camp Kids 82 Youth Events Elementary & High School 102 Holiday food baskets FEEDING THE HUNGRY 105 Clients/families served St. Vincent de Paul Homeless shelter dinners 315 Bags of food to hungry families 2,200 Homeless/laborers served box lunches 6,337 Visits to Homebound Eucharistic Ministers bringing communion to those who cannot attend Mass 966 Anointing of Sick parishioners receiving the Anointing at First Friday Masses, convalescent homes, and visit requests 208 Number of days confession available not including penance services MAKING DISCIPLES HEALING THE SICK & HURTING
So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1Corinthians 13:13 FEEDING THE HUNGRY Have you ever wondered why God doesn't just provide for the needy, feed the hungry or heal the hurting? He does... through us! Eucharistic Ministers visit 10 convalescent homes/hospitals to bring communion to those who cannot attend Sunday Mass. St. Louise supports special Archdiocesan collections for Catholic Relief Services, Holy Land, Retirement Fund for Religious & Priests, World & Home Missions, and others. Holiday food baskets, food pantry and support of a winter homeless shelter meet the physical needs of those most in need. Your generosity provides resources we can share with other Catholic organizations, such as Comboni Missionaries and local Catholic high schools. Faithful Living TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION Creating programs that build hope and confidence in our young people - helping them thrive as strong, faithful Catholics and members of our community: Students explore God s calling on their lives, and are asked to encourage seminarians and religious during Vocations Week with letters of support. A retreat for girls ages equipping them for their developing relationship with Christ and His Church. 5 young ladies were guided through preparation for their Quinceaneras. Equipping our young people and nurturing their spiritual lives with guest speakers, bible studies, Mass on the beach, retreats, and participation in local and national Catholic youth events, such as Youth Day at Religious Education Congress and the Steubenville Conference. Reinforcing our compassionate approach to social justice issues, through activities such as the 30 Hour Famine, food/ clothing drives, working at a homeless shelter, and a variety of service projects. MAKING DISCIPLES With a commitment to our great commission of bringing people into a relationship with Jesus and His Church, we make an impact on the lives of our parishioners and the surrounding community through sacraments, liturgies and social events: Monthly adoration of Blessed Sacrament with addition of 24 hour quarterly Adoration. Establishment of prayer ministry, Liturgy of the Hours, which is prayed every SaTurday. Training and certification of volunteer catechists and parish school teachers in the major themes of the faith and Church teaching. Weekly bible studies provided for youth and adults, with special devotions for the rosary, chaplet of divine mercy and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. 2 Daily Masses and 7 Sunday Masses, with Masses celebrated at 3 convalescent homes each month. Sharing the good news and joy of our faith by participating in community events - City Council meetings, community parades, and Concerts in the Park. Parishioner fellowship through a variety of events, ranging from family movie nights and musical concerts, to luaus, women s tea, and parish picnic. HEALING THE SICK & HURTING Compassion transforms the lives of people we serve everyday: The Sacrament of Reconciliation is provided with confession times provided 4 days of the week. Pastoral Counseling for those who are hurting or in need of one-on-one spiritual guidance. Helping 12 families through the annulment process leading them to forgiveness and healing. Communicating the good news of God s unconditional love to those incarcerated, through our Detention Ministry led by our Deacons.
Grateful Giving & Sharing! Parish Disbursements Parish Receipts Jesus entrusted us with a mission & your gifts bring this mission to life! Your financial support of St. Louise has enabled us to support the staff, ministries and facilities that inspire all of us to live an authentic Catholic life. Our Sunday offertory envelopes [Envelopes & Plate represent more than 70% of our parish s annual income. When combined with other weekly gifts [Holy Days & Facility Maintenance], Sunday offertory envelopes represent almost 80% of income. In the past five years, our parish has not been immune to economic challenges. Trying to balance parish expenses with a decreasing or flat level of weekly financial support leaves little margin for unexpected and increasing expenses. The Parish Finance Council consists of parish volunteers who meet monthly to provide financial leadership and counsel to the Pastor on behalf of our parish family. Those serving on the Council are: Bruce Beaumont, Dave Cunningham, Paul Fecteau, Pete Gautreau, Chris Hagerty, Deacon Al Valles, Sandy Verdegem Sunday Offertory Envelopes* vs Expenses * Excludes special collections Envelope Revenue Fiscal Year
Statement of Cash Receipts & Disbursements Fiscal Year July 1, June 30, 2014 Your offertory gift is so much more than an envelope. It is a tangible reminder that each of us make up the church and that it s our responsibility to keep the lights on and the doors open - to support each other and help our parish grow. We ask more families to participate and to consider increasing weekly giving as we use resources to impact our community for Christ and His Church. Currently, 1,645 of our registered 5,181 families donate to our weekly offertory collection. Together we have accomplished wonderful things for God s kingdom, but there is more work to be done. As we look forward to 2015 and beyond, we will continue to be good stewards of the treasure you have entrusted to St. Louise - in service to God, His people and His Church.
St. Louise de Marillac School L egacy of E xcellence Student Enrollment 306 / School Families 207 Grants received for classroom technology & school marketing 10% of parent population is St. Louise alumni Parent Service Hours 11,000+ Junior High Student Service Hours 1,500+ Transitional Kindergarten classroom expanded to double its original size For nearly half a century, St. Louise de Marillac School has been offering students a well-rounded education infused with Gospel values and Catholic tradition. Our students graduate with a strong academic foundation provided in a faith-filled P rincipal s R eport environment and continue Dr. Denise Valadez their faith journey by enrolling in our Confirmation program and becoming involved with youth ministry. Last year, we added a Transitional Kindergarten [TK] class to our school. Beginning with a class of 20 four-year-olds, we followed the academic and social standards developed by the Archdiocese for TK programs, and our students far exceeded all standards and expectations! This summer, we expanded the TK classroom, which doubles the space in which they learn, work and play. School Board Dave Cunningham, Chairman As Chairman of the School Board I am proud of the student and staff achievements highlighted in this year s Pastoral Report. While the School Board does not set policy or make curriculum or personnel decisions, we do serve as an advisory committee which counsels Dr. Valadez and Fr. Robert on the direction of the school. As business leaders, educators and more importantly parents, we are committed to nurturing the mind and soul of each student. The School Board is enthusiastic about changes implemented during the school year with progress made in several key areas: revitalized faculty and staff, expansion of Transitional Kindergarten, technology upgrades and enhancements to curriculum. There is a "buzz" of excitement throughout the school community, as advances continue to be made. Working together with parents, St. Louise will continue its reputation as a 21st Century educational institution founded on the principles of our Catholic faith. Thank you for your continued prayers and support. God bless you! At the end of the school year, we said goodbye to several well-loved teachers who retired. Sharon Durkan, Mary Lou Fimbres, Eleanor Lysecky and Sandy Parise served our school for a combined total of nearly 100 years! Their dedication and commitment to Catholic education is one we recognize and celebrate. St. Louise de Marillac School values its partnership with the parish. We recognize that as the largest ministry of the parish, we want to take an active role in parish life. Our students participate in annual food and clothing drives and volunteer for various outreach activities in the local community. Our expectation is for students to live by the words of St. Louise de Marillac and serve with hearts filled with the pure love of God. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I would like to thank the parish community for your continued support of the school. I ask for your continued prayers as we strive to advance to higher levels of learning in a faith-filled environment. Peace and Blessings, Dr. Denise Valadez, Principal
