2 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 9, 2018 Fr. Mark s Remarks I have found this prayer, by St. Francis de Sales, to be helpful during difficult times and hope you may find it helpful, too. Do not look forward to the trial and crosses Of this life with dread and fear. Rather, look to them with full confidence That as they arise, God, to whom you belong, Will deliver you from them. He has guided and guarded you Thus far in life. Do you but hold fast to his dear hand, and He will lead you safely though all trials. Whenever you cannot stand, He will carry you lovingly in his arms. children. For more information contact Pete Ries at , ext or pries@elcatholics.org. There will be no 4:30pm Mass on Saturday, September 22, so that we all can attend the Diocesan Assembly Mass celebrated by Bishop Boyea and more than 100 priests and deacons. We hope you will join us for the full day of activities or any part of it! For more information and to register see Have a blessed week! We will have Anointing of the Sick each third Saturday of the month after the 4:30pm Mass. The next Anointing of the Sick will be after the 4:30pm Mass in the Chapel at STA on Saturday, September 15. Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow. The same Eternal Father who cares for you today Will take good care of you tomorrow And every day of your life. Either he will shield you from suffering or He will give you the unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then and put aside all useless thoughts, Vain dreads, and anxious imaginations. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of welcoming adults interested in becoming Catholic. This process happens year round in our parish. A new group of people seeking to learn about the Catholic Church is about to begin Tuesday, September 11, 7:00-9:00pm and Sunday, September 16, 2:00-4:00pm both at St. John. Individuals choose the time best suited to their schedule. Most of the people who inquire about becoming Catholic do so because someone they know and respect invited them. You are the perfect person to invite another to learn about the Catholic Church! Think of a family member, a co-worker, a classmate, a neighbor, or a friend. Each of us can share the gift of faith we have received. Also, consider being a sponsor for one of the inquirers. This fall there will also be a group for teens and 2 The Diocesan Assembly takes place in TWO WEEKS on Saturday, September 22. If you haven t yet registered, be sure to do so soon, as space is limited. Over 9,000 people are registered! The Assembly is for all Catholics from throughout the diocese and you are welcome to attend the full day of activities or any part of it. The Assembly will include an outdoor Eucharistic Procession, inspirational talks and music, family activities, religious displays and vendors, Mass celebrated by Bishop Boyea and more than 100 priests and deacons, and much more. Visit elcatholics.org/9-12-religious-ed-enrollment to learn all about our 3 different programs. You can also register and pay online! jhamilton@elcatholics.org with any questions. Be Opened When we are open, we enter a relationship, a text, or a situation without preconceived ideas or attitudes. Where in your life have you been closed off and needed to be more open? How does it feel when you think about being more open? What kinds of emotions come up? As a family, take a walk down your street. Invite each family member to look at the neighborhood with new eyes, as though they had never been on the street before. Do they see anything that may have gone unnoticed? When the family gets home, encourage each person to count the number of things that were seen with new eyes. How did it feel to be open to seeing new things in their neighborhood? What difference would it make to always be open to God? (excerpt from Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families ) The Mass BIBLE STUDY will continue on Wednesday, October 3, 10:00-11:45am with the discussion of the final chapters of The Book Of Revelations. In addition, the Bishop Barron videos on The MASS will be shown in the Fireplace room at STA, 9:15-9:45am, for six weeks. All are welcome to join us for any or all sessions. Space is limited, please contact Carol Ann at if you are planning to attend.

6 Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults New RCIA Group Begins This Week A new group of people interested in learning about the Catholic Church begins this Tuesday, September 11, 7:00-9:00pm and Sunday, September 16, 2:00-4:00pm, both at St. John Church and Student Center. Individuals choose the time which best suits their schedules. You are welcome to attend with a friend or to come alone. Participants include undergraduate and graduate students, year-round East Lansing and area residents -- people of various ages. The sessions stress: answers to your questions, conversation, and hospitality. If you have been thinking about learning more about the Catholic Church, now is the time to call Pete Ries at , ext or pries@elcatholics.org. If someone you know has expressed an interest in learning about the Catholic Church, please share the above information with that individual. Also, we are still seeking additional RCIA sponsors for this group. An RCIA sponsor walks with the candidate on his/her journey of faith. The sponsor tries to attend the RCIA sessions with their candidate. They are a friendly presence helping their candidate begin to become familiar with some of the beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith. Sponsors answer basic questions and offer encouragement. If you would be willing or would like to find out more about this role, call Pete Ries or him.
