2 P ALM S UNDAY March 25, 2018 Fr. Mark s Remarks Easter Masses With our celebration of Palm (Passion) Sunday, we enter the most holy week of the year! This week, the last confessions will be heard on Wednesday from 11:00am to Noon at St. John. Tuesday of Holy Week we will hear confession continuously from 3:00pm until 9:00pm at St. John s. Make this a part of your Holy Week if you have not gone during Lent. St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday Easter Vigil March 31 8:00pm Sunday April 1 9:00am & 11:00am St. John Church & Student Center Sunday April 1 8:00am, 10:00am, & 12:00noon I hope you attend, and invite family, friends, and neighbors to attend, the solemn and beautiful liturgies of Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Both are celebrated at each parish site at different times. On Good Friday evening at 7:30pm our MSU music scholars and the STA choir will present The Crucifixion, Sir John Stainer s Passiontide Oratorio at St. Thomas. The Blessing of Easter Food is at 11:00am at STA on Saturday. I love this Catholic, cultural tradition. I remember going with my mother as a child. There will be no evening Masses. Easter Hospitality! Our Easter Masses, like our Christmas Masses, are traditionally attended by many visitors, people who may have been away from the Church for a while and people who may not be Catholic. To all of them let us extend a special welcome during this Easter season! We will receive forty people into the Church at the Easter Vigil Saturday evening which begins at 8:00pm (No 4:30pm Saturday vigil Mass). This is admittedly a long but spectacularly profound and moving Mass. Remember that the Easter Sunday Masses will be quite full, so arrive early, welcome those home for Easter, and smile at and welcome our visitors. Pick up a copy of the parish brochure entitled Ministry of Welcome & Hospitality. It includes a number of tips for being a more welcoming parishioner, e.g., making an intentional effort to smile and greet other parishioners and visitors, especially those whom you do not know, offering your first name as you greet folks at the beginning of Mass, and sitting in the middle of a pew to make it more accessible for others to sit in the pew with you. We are all ministers of welcome & hospitality! These brochures are located in the formation racks at the various Church entries please take one. For those who will be travelling for Easter let me take this opportunity to wish you safe travels and a blessed and happy Easter Day. Spring break begins for many of our families the week after Easter. Be assured of my prayers for you. See you in church! Let us all make a special effort to welcome parishioners and visitors warmly this Easter! Blessings in this Holy Week! Please Note: The Parish buildings and facilities will be CLOSED on Easter Monday, April 2. Parking at St. John Church for HOLY WEEK Don t forget that parking is available in the ramp under the Marriott as the Grove St. Ramp fills up quickly. (Regular rates apply.) Also, the meters on and around M.A.C. Ave. are in effect all day from 8:00am - 3:00am. There will be one Mass on that day 6:30am at STA. There will be no Mass or Reconciliation at SJSC. 2

7 Rite of Christian Initiation Of Adults Update This Sunday the catechumens/elect and candidates and their sponsors had a retreat in preparation for the Easter Vigil. They reflected on the Paschal Mystery, the foundational saving event of Jesus Christ by which he saved us from our sins and gave us a share in the everlasting life of God. They discussed how the sacraments and all of creation lead us to God. This past Tuesday and this Sunday the inquirers ad their sponsors learned about the Mass. There are four main movements in the Mass. First, we gather, coming from many places and circumstances. The opening song unites us in a joyful spirit. We praise God through the singing of the Glory to God and the priest collects all our intentions in the opening prayer. Second, we listen to the Word of God. There are three readings which usually include one from the Old Testament, one from the epistles of the New Testament, and the third from one of the Gospels. The homily which follows breaks open those readings and applies them to our daily lives. This is followed by our statement of beliefs as found in the Creed. This movement concludes with the prayers of the faithful. Third, the assembly responds. Our gifts of bread, wine, and our monetary offerings are brought to the altar. These gifts symbolize the offering of our lives to God. During the Eucharistic Prayer our gifts of bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ and offered to God. We then recite the Lord's Prayer and exchange the sign of peace as an indication of our willingness to be one with the Body of Christ. Then we come forth to share in the body ad blood of Christ, God's greatest gift to us. This movement concludes with a prayer. Fourth, the assembly goes forth. The concluding rite includes a blessing and a dismissal which sends us forth to live out the implications of what we have just done in the Mass. We are meant to be the Body of Christ in the world, back in the many places and circumstances from which we gathered. If you have been thinking about exploring your interest in the Catholic Church, or if you know someone who has mentioned this possibility, call Pete Ries at , ext or him at pries@elcatholics.org. 7 Can You Help? We are in need of volunteers to assist with the Outreach Mass, Communion Services, and Rosary at various Retirement and Health Care facilities in East Lansing. With any ministry, it is important to keep in mind that it is the Lord's work. He assigns the tasks and uniquely gifts a variety of individuals to work together to fulfill His plan. The difference one person can make often seems minuscule, but what you re doing may make a big difference in the life and eternity of another person. The people in the various retirement and health care facilities rely on volunteers from St. Thomas/St. John to bring Jesus to them. If you feel a calling to help, please contact Deacon Ziggy. You can dcndavez@elcatholics.org, call his cell , or call the office at St. Thomas Aquinas Faith Sharing Questions for Next Sunday s Gospel We invite you to prepare for next Sunday s Easter liturgy, by reflecting on the Gospel reading for that Sunday: Another Altar Server Training Added Come one and all - brand new servers and those who want a refresher - to Altar server training on Friday, April 13, at 3:15pm in STA church. Those wishing to serve must be 10 years old (or close to it). Direct any questions to Denise Waytes at denise@elcatholics.org or Jn 20:1 9 or Mk 16:1 7 Then the other disciple also went in and he saw and believed. Do I trust in Christ s power, which I cannot see, more than the problems that I can see? Do I believe God is a good Father and only permits that which leads to greater glory for both of us?
