1 March 2015 SonTimes Monthly Newsle er of Parrish United Methodist Church A Word from Pastor Chris Dear Members and Friends of Parrish United Methodist Church, Church Office: th St. East P.O. Box 375 Parrish, FL Tel: (941) Fax: (941) office@parrishumc.com Website: Office Hours Mon.-Thurs.: 9 AM - 4 PM Friday: 9 AM - 12 PM Just a few weeks ago, with worship on Ash Wednesday, we began the season of Lent. Lent is a 40-day liturgical season that begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Maundy Thursday. Sundays are not included in the 40-day count because every Sunday is a joyful celebration of Jesus' resurrection. Though not mentioned directly in the Bible, Lent has long been a tradition in the Christian Church. The 40 days of Lent recall the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, fasting and being tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:1-11). Lent is considered a time of penance and discipline as we prepare for the journey of Holy Week and the celebration of Easter. The sad truth is that often we spend much time each year preparing for the birth of our Savior and very little (if any) time in preparing to celebrate His resurrection! Yet the birth of Jesus is only meaningful because of His death and resurrection. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:27 that without the resurrection our faith is futile. Observing Lent helps us remember the entire story of Christ and prepares us to focus on that which is most essential for our faith. The journey of Lent, especially as we remember the darkness of Christ s final days, prepares our hearts and our spirits to truly celebrate the joy of resurrection. During Lent we remember the story of our salvation. Simply put, Lent prepares us to celebrate the fullness of what Easter means for us. Continued on page 6...

5 Children s Ministry Ethel Pawley Page 5 Children s Ministry is filled with many activities that enhance the spiritual growth of each child. It all starts with building a basic foundation of teaching on Sunday mornings. Offering age appropriate teaching to help children gain an understanding of Biblical principles gives each child a foundation on which to build their faith. But more important is offering a loving and caring environment in which learning can take place. Each week we have the opportunity to make an eternal impact on an increasing number of children. This becomes more evident as we approach Palm Sunday and the celebration of Easter Sunday. As we pray throughout this season of Lent, please remember to pray for our teachers who give sacrificially of their time and for all the children who will be attending our church and hearing the life changing story of our Savior s death, burial and resurrection. 9 Page 9 So we, through many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Romans 12:5 Prayer Blanket Ministry What a joy to see both prayer rails covered with blankets and quilts on Sunday, February 8 th, for all three services. What a blessing! Many thanks to the creative ladies who crocheted, knitted and quilted. Over 50 blankets and quilts were selected for someone in need. Several touching thank you notes have been received. Take a minute to look at the Prayer Blanket scrapbook in the Gathering Place. Also, add a pin to the map so we can see where all the blankets and quilts are giving comfort and joy. Thank you for the monetary donations which contribute to this ministry. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13 A Word from Pastor Chris cont. As we experience Lent together I pray you begin to feel the anticipation of Easter. And when, on April 5 th, we join together as believers and declare The Lord is risen, I pray our hearts will be bursting with the joy and hope that Christ came to give. Blessings, Chris
