1 First Presbyterian Church Devotion for March T he average Christian in the US spends 10 minutes per day with God; meanwhile the average American spends over 4 hours a day watching TV. Perhaps TV is not your thing maybe you don t even own one. But how about your time and your resources? How much of your money is spent on yourself and how much is directed toward God s kingdom? How much of your time is dedicated to pursuing your life and your goals, and how much is focused on God s work and purposes? God doesn t want religious duty. He doesn t want a distracted, half-hearted, Fine, I ll read a chapter...now are You happy? attitude. God wants His Word to be a delight to us, so much so that we mediate on it day and night. In Psalm 1:3, He promises that those who do so are like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Continued on Page 2 The Lamb s Kin March 2015 A message from our Pastor the Rev. Bill Proctor God continues to call new members into our community of faith T his past Sunday, First Presbyterian had the privilege of welcoming 13 new members. Here are some interesting stats that you may not notice as you read through the bios of each new member. First, these new members come to us from a wide variety of church backgrounds. Among the mix are a former Orthodox Presbyterian, a former Korean Presbyterian, a former member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, another who grew up in two different Hispanic Presbyterian congregations in Houston, a former member of the Four Square Church, a former Primitive Baptist, some former Methodists, and a former Catholic. As I said to the congregation last Sunday, you may want to Google a few of those denominations such as the Four Square to find out more about them. Second, these new members represent parents of nine children under the age of nine, as well as one teenager. The youngest of the children are four months and five months old respectively. No wonder our Sunday School classes for children are looking so full these days! Third, these new members also represent parents of six grown children and grandparents of eight. Fourth, two of these new members have also served as Elders and Deacons in other Presbyterian congregations. I hope you will enjoy reading more about our newest members in the article that follows on page 2. In other news, this coming Sunday we will have the privilege of welcoming nine members of this year s Confirmation Class. Three of the young people will receive the Sacrament of Baptism, which will certainly be a highlight of the service. Their bios will appear in next month s newsletter. In the meantime, as we continue in this time of transition as a congregation, and await the action of Tres Rios presbytery, God is still at work calling men and women, young and old, into this particular community of faith. This reality is such good news for us to celebrate. Finally, many thanks to all of you who helped to celebrate my birthday this past Sunday. Having Happy Birthday sung to me at both services, as well as a huge birthday cake following the second service, was very kind. Next year my birthday will not fall on a Sunday, so I hope to have the day slip past without as much recognition. Blessings to you!

2 P A G E 2 Continued from Page 1 People who are obsessed with God have an intimate relationship with Him. They are nourished by God s Word throughout the day because they know that 40 minutes on Sunday is not enough to sustain them for a whole week, especially when they will encounter so many distractions and alternative messages. Francis Chan Crazy Love Jerri and Sherrell Brown First off, before going any further in my introduction of them, Sherrell is the Mr. and Jerri is the Mrs. I am told their names have caused some confusion from time-to-time. They are parents of two sons and grandparents of four. They are coming to us from First Presbyterian Church in Odessa, where Jerri served as a Deacon and Elder. Sherrell has always worked in sales and continues to do so while Jerri has worked in education and is now retired. Jon Castillo Jon is married to Diamond and they are parents of six children, with the oldest being seven and the youngest being just four months old. You will often see a good number of those children sitting with Joel or me here on the Chancel steps during the Children s Moment each Sunday morning. Jon grew up in the Korean Presbyterian church. Jon is in the US Army, where he is stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base as an instructor. Marilyn and Gary Flage The Flages are coming to us from St. Mark Presbyterian Church here in San Angelo, where Gary served as both Elder and Deacon. Gary works for San Angelo Real Estate and Marilyn, who is now retired, once worked for the San Angelo Symphony, as well as the United Campus Ministry at Angelo State University. Marilyn is also a Treadwell, meaning she is related to Brian Treadwell and that ranching family here in the church. Summer registration for Angel Academy will begin April 1. FMI, call Dawn on a Mon. or Wed., Hannah Goodman Hannah is married to Creel, who is already a member of this congregation, and they are parents to Alexia and Sawyer. Creel and Hannah were actually married in this church. Hannah grew up in Marfa and Eldorado, where she was a member of the Methodist churches in those two communities. Hannah is also a granddaughter of Jane Shurley and niece of Pat Shurley, and she works as a hairstylist at Reflections Salon. Charles Grabowski Charles is married to Angie, and he is coming to us from an Orthodox Presbyterian church background. Charles works for General Mills, which means that he travels across this part of West Texas making sure the products General Mills sells are properly displayed in stores like HEB and Wal-Mart. One of the things Charles taught us is the number one selling product for General Mills can you guess what it is? It is Honey Nut Cheerios. Continued on Page 5 T H E L A M B S K I N

4 P A G E 4 Thankful Hearts March 8 MISSION OPPOR- TUNITY: Another mission trip to Guatemala is planned for July 18-25, This year, we will focus our mission work on construction, children, youth, and a new women s ministry project. Call Joel FMI, Dear FPC: Thank you so much for the fantastic box of Valentine s treats! I think you stuffed enough goodies in there to keep me well stocked until Easter at least. You are a wonderful church family and such a blessing to your college students. Thanks again, Elise Kappelmann Dear Deacons: Warner and I appreciate your thoughtful card and kind words. You are such a caring and hard-working group and we appreciate all you do. Our church reaches out in love because of you. Love, Janet & Warner To our friends at FPC: Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers Sunday, Feb. 8 and thanks to Casey Puckitt for delivering them. Casey was extremely nice and we had a short visit; but a good one. Phyllis and I joined FPC about five years ago and have enjoyed that time. So many good and friendly people. The leadership of the church is outstanding and we thank God that He has put us in this place. Thanks to someone that has sent a lap afghan, it has helped to keep me warn on these cold days. Thanks, Phyllis & David Crews From St. Paul Presbyterian Church On December 20, over 1300 boxes of food with more than 62,000 meals; worth of groceries were distributed to 302 families with 1,330 individuals in the Concho Valley. Every one of the 702 children in those families received at least one age appropriate gift. For over 20 years, St. Paul and our partners have provided food at Christmas time for this in the Concho Valley who could use a little extra help. Thank you for being a part of this ministry. Continued from Page 2 Beckie Talamantez and Rick Guerra Between the two of them they are parents of three boys, the youngest of whom is just five months old. Beckie is coming to us from a Catholic background, while Rick grew up as a Presbyterian in Houston. Beckie happens to have once worked at the Reflections Salon with Hannah, and they were very surprised to run into each other at our first new member s class. Beckie now works at DeMarco s Spa. Rick works for West Texas Gas. Julie and Tim Pucci I bet many of you thought Tim and Julie have been members for a long time since they are so active in the life of the church. Tim is a Lieutenant for the San Angelo Police department, and comes to us from a Four Square Church background. Julie, as most of you know, serves as our Music Ministry Coordinator, a position in which she has done an outstanding job I might add. Julie comes to us from a Primitive Baptist Church background, and they are parents to Ryan. Carolyn and Bill Quillin Bill is a retired banker having worked in both Amarillo and Odessa, and now is a semi-rancher on Carolyn s family land south of San Angelo. One of Bill s claims to fame is that he attended high school in Dallas with Bob and Cybee Hamblen. Carolyn grew up here in San Angelo, and they are parents of two sons and grandparents of two. They are coming to us from a Methodist background. Welcome to our church family!
