1 First Presbyterian Church Devotion for May As Christians, we can t love the whole world. But we should remember that God has placed us in a specific community at a particular time. We re called to love those around us. Loving them means serving them and in doing so, we become the best of citizens. C.S. Lewis The Lamb s Kin May 2012 A message from our pastor Bill Proctor Serving our community well through Mission Service and Outreach O ne of the aspects I find so appealing about First Presbyterian Church is its long history of supporting mission efforts both locally and globally. This truth recently came to mind as the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee begins the task of seeking to describe First Presbyterian to those who will be candidates for the position. This past weekend I had the pleasure of joining with others from the church in order to volunteer at a new home being built by Habitat for Humanity. Several of us were kept busy for a couple of hours applying sealer on the new cedar fence that encloses the backyard of the house. The house, located at 704 N. Adams, is being built with donations from nine local congregations First Presbyterian, Good Shepherd Episcopal, St. Paul Presbyterian, Thrivent Chapter Lutherans, Glen Meadows Baptist, Sierra Vista Methodist, Southland Baptist, Victory Christian Center, and Goodfellow Air Force Base Chapel tithes. I am pleased that we at First Presbyterian are a part of this ecumenical endeavor to provide affordable housing right here in San Angelo. In addition, through the ministry of our Mission Service and Outreach Committee, Chaired by Elder, Lee Puckitt, we have also provided one of the daily lunches shared by those who work on the Habitat House during the week. Three homes are being built on N. Adams, so do a drive-by and check them out. The dedication of the house is scheduled for Sunday, June 24. Maybe this is a good time to simply list once again the various local ministries and missions we support as a congregation United Campus Ministries, Project Dignidad, Adult Enrichment Center, Samaritan Counseling Center, Concho Valley Food Bank, La Esperanza Clinic, Meals for the Elderly, the Wesley Soup Kitchen, House of Faith, the Tom Green County Jail ministry called Through God Comes Justice, Faith in Action, the Pregnancy Help Center, Lamar Elementary School, and of course, Habitat for Humanity. Fully ten percent of our annual budget, meaning over $100,000, is devoted to the various missions we support as a congregation, which means your giving does more than just pay staff salaries and keep our church facility operating. Continued on page 2

2 P A G E 2 Continued from page 1 Dinner for Eight O ur next Dinner for Eight event is set for Sunday, June 10. Look for sign-up sheets throughout the church! We thank Johnna Page for continuing to coordinate this fellowship event! Beyond San Angelo we also support the work of the Medical Benevolence Foundation, which provides medical care in many third-world locations. We have also been long-time supporters of Presbyterian Home and Services, which provides residential care and other services to children and families including group homes and a foster home. Many years ago when I was a child growing up in a Presbyterian congregation in Dallas, Christian mission was always understood to be something that took place far away usually somewhere in Africa, the Far East, South America or even on some distant Pacific Island. We in the church now view mission as something that is not limited to what takes place in some distant location. Today, Christian mission is understood to be a ministry that can also be taking place right in our own backyard and community. It is true that we occasionally put together a mission team and head off to a distant place like Guatemala, but month after month, year after year, we are also faithfully supporting missions right here in San Angelo, seeking to make a difference for the cause of Christ in the community where we live. All of us are involved in mission because of the support we provide to so many agencies and ministries as a congregation. Again, on the subject of mission, this Sunday our guest preacher will be Jorge Santizo, Director of Promised Land Ministries in Guatemala. Jorge s family was once very prominent in the political life of Guatemala his grandfather was a high-ranking general in the Army and also served as Ambassador to Nicaragua. As a child, Jorge s father was free to run in and out of the Presidential Palace in Guatemala City. It was when the Santizo family made the decision to become faithful followers of Jesus that they walked away from the life of privilege they once lived in order to devote their lives to doing ministry among the poor in the numerous villages that surround Lake Atitlan in the highlands of Guatemala. I know you will enjoy having the opportunity to meet Jorge this Sunday and hear more about how God has called him and his family into ministry. As always, I look forward to seeing you in worship God bless you!
