2 Dear Parishioners: "Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We're reminded of the innocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typically has in front of children. Yet here we are. Jesus' response goes further back then the Mosaic law. "From the beginning, God made them male and female... the two shall become one flesh... what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve possessed original innocence. How eager they were to encounter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We're quick to find a way around difficult moments. In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in today's Gospel. His invitation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today -- now! -- by grace. Indeed, "the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." (LPI) We will be offering an anointing of the sick mass for those who feel the need for spiritual, physical or emotional healing on Saturday, October 13, at 10 am. Have you ever wondered about the origins of the words and gestures we experience at Mass? Join us in A Biblical Walk Through the Mass. This is a five part program on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. The program begins on 11/1/2018 with meetings on 11/8, 11/15, 11/29, and 12/6. The program includes an easy to read textbook covering the parts of the Mass, a workbook, small group discussion, and a video featuring Dr. Edward Sri that explores the topic for the week. Cost of the textbook and workbook is $20. Knights of Columbus Meeting Change Due to changes in the parish schedule, our KC council will be changing their monthly meetings to the 3rd Monday of the month. Social Justice Corner One of the 7 principles of Social Justice: CALL TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND PARTICIPATION The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society in economics and politics, in law and policy, directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. 5 Holy Family News I've been able to invest more time in our classrooms in the last few weeks, and have been chatting with teachers about the teaching and learning that takes place in their classrooms. There are some really engaging things happening, (reenacting the black plague, service learning projects, coding robots) and we continue to work toward improving our engagement. As I type this, later today I will meet with all Holy Family teachers, and we will share some of the best classroom techniques we have used to leverage novelty in the classroom for the sake of piquing student curiousity. It would appear that the classrooms are becoming increasingly vibrant as we all continue to grow in our respective roles, and as always, the students are the beneficiaries! Ken Glaser will be speaking at the afternoon session and three couples will lead our breakout sessions which will focus on different stages of marriage.
