2 2 A Note from Fr. John Holy Week and Triduum Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday Mass (liturgy). We celebrate Jesus triumphal entry in to Jerusalem. Jesus entered in triumph and departed in Crucifixion. The liturgy commences with procession and joyful song to celebrate Jesus triumph over sin and evil. The second part of the liturgy becomes solemn, celebrating Jesus suffering that gains us forgiveness from our sins. Triduum: Lent officially ends with the celebration of the Holy Thursday liturgy. The next three day are called the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday). Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist and priesthood. Jesus changed bread and wine into His body and blood, then shared it with the apostles to share with us. The institution of the Eucharist and washing of the feet are the main focus of this liturgy. We are reminded by Jesus that love (total self giving) and service are the focus of God s life. As we worship as the people of God, we do not become superior to others but examples and instruments of salvation for all. Good Friday celebrates that God loved us so much that Jesus died for us, so that we may be free of sin and enter into fullness of life. Jesus passion and death are sign of life and hope, not sadness but triumph. The mood of this liturgy is somberness not emptiness. Good Friday is a day of abstinence and fast. Holy Saturday celebrates the central mystery of our Faith: the paschal mystery (Jesus death and resurrection) Holy Saturday Liturgy consists of four parts: Fire and light: Jesus is the light of the world. The paschal candle is light. Liturgy of the Word: We share the salvation story and proclaim the resurrection. Baptismal Liturgy: Renewal of faith given to us in our Baptism. Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Holy Saturday Liturgy lasts about two hours. It is the fastest two hours of the year! The action in faith is electric: 1. Darkness to light 2. God s gift of salvation to His people 3. Renewing the gift of faith with which we are given the gift of divine life 4. Celebrating the full presence of Jesus in the Eucharist Please take time to celebrate the center of your faith. Celebrate the Octave of Easter with us. The Octave is the eight days which stretch from Easter Sunday to the Second Sunday of Easter. Mass will be held either at St. Pat s or at Newman Catholic each day. In the event of a funeral, you are encouraged to join us at the funeral Mass. S T. When you contribute to this collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. You are Invited Please join us for a reception in the parish hall following the Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday, March 31. Easter Water Newly blessed holy water will be available at all Easter Masses. Bring your containers from home, or bottles will be available. This water is used throughout the year for special blessings, daily prayer, and in your holy water fonts. Rice Bowl Through the CRS Rice Bowl, we can help people around the world who struggle to provide enough food to meet their families daily needs. We continue to pray for the needs of our brothers and sister all over the world as we share in the abundance we have been given. The money you ve collected in your Rice Bowl can be placed in the collection container in the sanctuary through this weekend. 3 M A R C H 2 5, Building for Community Update: Thank you for your continued support! What is the status of our fundraising? As of mid-march, our total of $1,900,000 includes pledges of $1,620,000 and parish savings of $280,000. Additionally, payment received on those pledges stands at $1,135,000. What is left to do? We need just $130,000 more to complete the entire project, which includes asbestos removal under the pews before replacement. That breaks down to about $2,300 per pew for our 56 pews. If we raise this additional amount, we can have new pews included in the August renovations of the church. April 15 is our deadline for this additional pledge amount. We have already received commitments for 21 of the 56 pews! Thank you to all who have supported this project throughout the past two years, and for additional gifts made toward our pews. If you would like to adopt a pew, please return the form you received or contact the parish office by April of 56 PEWS! Easter Vigil Reception Can you donate appetizers or other items for the reception following the Easter Vigil? Sign up sheets can be found that the church entrances, or you can sign up on the parish Facebook page. Easter Flowers Donations toward Easter flowers can be made in memory or in honor of your loved ones. Please make sure to print clearly the names on the back of the envelopes that were provided in the quarterly packets, or on your own envelopes. Names will be accepted through April 2. Hospital Visits Due to privacy laws, the parish is not automatically notified when you or someone you know is a patient at the hospital. Patients who wish to receive Communion from a pastoral visitor or priest must agree to be listed as Catholic on the admission sheet. This authorizes the parish and hospital spiritual caregivers to visit you during your hospitalization. If a patient does not do this, visiting clergy and pastoral visitors will not have access to his or her name and location. Please make sure that you have the hospital put you on our parish list, or have a family member call the parish office to request a visit from the priest.
