God tells Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, / before you were born I dedicated you, / a prophet to the nations I appointed you." God has created each one of us with purposefulness and gifts to use for the building of the kingdom of God. In the gospel we see Jesus at the beginning of the work for which he has been dedicated and already he is facing resistance and violence. In this first altercation he is able to pass through the midst of the angry mob. He has work to do and a mission to accomplish. At the end of his ministry in Jerusalem instead of passing through the crowd he will submit to it and give his life. In all that he does, Jesus is animated and led by love, the love that St. Paul talks about in his letter to the Corinthians. BAPTISM CLASSES If you are desiring Baptism for your child or have been asked to be a godparent, and are an active practicing Catholic, there will be a 2-part series of classes on Saturdays, March 2 and March 9, from 10 a.m. 12 p.m. at St. Cecilia's (the building above the back grass area). It is a requirement by the Diocese that parents and Godparents take a Baptism class in their parish. This is a wonderful time to meet new parents in the parish and begin your journey of faith together. There is a $25 fee for materials. NOTICE SPANISH MASS TIME CHANGE Beginning next Sunday, February 10, 2019, the Spanish Mass time will change to 1 p.m. This will change the time of Eucharistic Adoration on the First and Third Sundays of each month to begin at 2 p.m. WORLD DAY OF THE SICK MASS Monday, February 11, 11 a.m. St. Patrick Church Luncheon to follow after the Healing Mass. Everyone is invited. PARISH MISSION The final countdown is on!!!! It's just a matter of days!!!! Our parish mission begins next Sunday night, February 10. We have been planning, preparing, and praying that God would bless these four days in a mighty way. Come with an expectant faith... Expecting God to bring you into a new place with Him. BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Introduction to This Weekend s Readings Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-5, Jeremiah is also a prophet who finds no welcome in his hometown. He receives the call from God as a young man and is given the difficult task of prophesying the coming Babylonian exile to the king and temple court. It does not go well. At one point Jeremiah, unlike Jesus who is able to pass through the midst of those who wish to hurl him over a cliff, is actually tossed into a pit. Even though Jesus and Jeremiah both face resistance, God continues to be with them. As God tells Jeremiah, "They will fight against you but not prevail over you. / Be not crushed on their account." Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 Often we hear the second reading from St. Paul at weddings. It might lead us to associate Paul's words with romantic love and, indeed, this is the kind of love necessary to sustain a lifelong covenant between two people. Far from exclusively romantic love, however, Paul is telling us of the love that must surround and infuse our entire lives as Christians. Without this love Paul says, "I am nothing." In our lives as Christians we are called to follow the examples of Jeremiah, Paul, and Jesus to accept the work God has dedicated us to and to strive to meet all the circumstances of our lives with patient and enduring love. The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor; to proclaim liberty to captives. Gospel Reading: Luke 4:21-30 It is often difficult to see something (or someone) that we know well with fresh eyes. Jesus returns to his hometown and the people there see him as they always have, as the son of Joseph the carpenter. Jesus tells them, "No prophet is accepted in his own native place." Prophets, by their very nature, are called to shake people out of their complacency and to point out when something new is happening. Like the people of Nazareth, we might feel like we know Jesus. His words may not sound radical to us. As Christians we must continually strive to be open to the words of Jesus, the prophet, who would like to show us something new. Gracious God, hear the prayers we bring before you today and,in your generous love, grant them. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen Your Generosity to St. Patrick Church is Greatly Appreciated. 5 PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing Swear to God: The Promise and Power of the Sacraments, by Scott Hahn. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. SUSPENSION OF THE CUP FOR FLU SEASON The incidence of flu and flu-like illnesses has reached a level requiring that we enact preventive measures to mitigate the possibility of infection at Mass. In order to protect the health and wellbeing of everyone, Bishop Soto has issued the following directives: The use of the Communion cup is suspended temporarily. Do not shake hands. Offer the sign of Peace to those around you with a simple nod, saying "Peace be with you." Do not hold hands during the Our Father. The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and other Holy Days does not apply to those who are sick. If you are sick, stay home and take care of yourself. The administration of Holy Communion in both kinds will resume as soon as the Bishop deems it safe and prudent to do so. CULTURE OF LIFE Thank you, Charlie Babiarz, for everything involved in the extremely well-organized bus trip to San Francisco for the West Coast Walk for Life last weekend. The speeches were so inspiring, and walking peacefully in the sunshine with tens of thousands of pro-life advocates was an awesome experience. Great attendance from Culture of Life Ministry, St. Patrick's parishioners and Fr. Chris! The early Mass before the bus trip was a great way to start the day. The next Culture of Life meeting is Monday, February 4 (tomorrow night!), at 7 p.m. in the Small hall; you are always invited to join our group. Monday night we will have Eva Fisher presenting information on Natural Family Planning and Steve Patton, Associate Director for Family & Respect Life from the Diocese of Sacramento joining us as well. SAVE THE DATE Saturday, March 23, 9 a.m. 12:30 p.m., St. Patrick Hall Whole Person Care & Prepare Workshop Caring for Our Sick & Dying With Dignity At this workshop you will learn Church teaching on end of life ethics, accessing quality palliative care, hospice care, preparing advance health directives and pastoral care at the end of life. This workshop will also help you address these crucial questions: How to LIVE while we die? How to have grace-filled conversations with our loved ones that are dying? How to make end-of-life decisions that are supported by your Church? Watch the bulletin for more information. STEWARDSHIP CORNER At the end of every Mass Father says to go forth to love and serve the Lord. If you are looking for a way to serve the Lord, join us for a rewarding experience feeding the homeless at Hospitality House. St. Patrick s Church has been involved with feeding the guests at Hospitality House two to three Sundays each month for many years. Other churches and organizations share the responsibilities of providing meals as well. Every night of the week Hospitality House feeds and shelters individuals, including women and children. This shelter, called Utah s Place, is considered an emergency shelter, and each guest is required to follow the house rules. Once the guests pass the entrance requirements, they are encouraged to do chores to help the operation run smoothly. This means there are several guests who clean up the kitchen after we have prepared and served the dinner. That is correct we do not need to do dishes. I want to thank the incredible volunteers who have supported this ministry in the past and especially those who do so now. You have made such a difference in their lives. You have given the gift of yourself, and they know that you care. It has been said that many people are just one paycheck or illness away from being homeless, and a place like Hospitality House provides help and hope. Please prayerfully consider participating in this fun, rewarding and spiritual ministry. The commitment is minimal with you and your team serving from one to eight times a year. We will accommodate your ability and availability. The guests truly and sincerely appreciate the meals and our friendship. I am proud that I was able to join the community in feeding the less fortunate while representing St. Patrick s Church. ATTENTION ALL MILITARY VETERANS AND SPOUSES REGARDLESS OF FAITH!! Is cremation part of your final life plan? Or you don't have final plans because you do not plan on dying? Or you are going to let the kids decide? The Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services of the Diocese of Sacramento are proposing a 72-niche columbarium for veterans and spouses to be located in the designated veterans' section at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Grass Valley. Spouses of deceased veterans are eligible and need not be Catholic. An Information Forum will be held on Sunday, February 10, in conjunction with the monthly Pancake Breakfast at St. Patrick's Hall. Breakfast is included for attendees. A representative from the Diocese of Sacramento will be present to answer questions regarding cremation, eligibility, project design, cost, etc. If unable to attend but interested, please contact Ed Wydra at or edwydra@comcast.net.
