PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 46, CW p. 84 SECOND LESSON: Romans 3: Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. 3

4 21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. 27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. GOSPEL: John 8: To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. 33 They answered him, We are Abraham s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free? 4

5 34 Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Pastor Vomhof is back and will lead us in worship until almost Christmas. Grace Lutheran in Nye will host an afternoon Reformation Rally Worship today at 4 pm as well. 5

6 Women of Emmanuel Diaper Collection Instead of collecting for the Food Shelf in October, Women of Emmanuel is collecting baby diapers (any size) and unscented wipes for Christian Life Ministries New Day Pregnancy Care Center. These items are always on their wish list. The box for donations will be out through today, October 28. Calendars For Sale IGNITE is selling calendars for $8 each. Please put your cash or check in the envelope by the calendar display in the narthex or fellowship hall. Help Needed WELS Christian Aid and Relief is still looking for volunteers to help with hurricane cleanup in Florida. Airfare and accommodations will be provided. Work will primarily be cleaning up trees, with some other jobs possible. 7 Other Items of Interest Attendance last Sunday: 82 Fellowship refreshments next Sunday: open Pastor Welch Accepts Call Pastor Clayton Welch, who has been pastor at Faith Ev. Lutheran Congregation in River Falls since January, 2010, has accepted the Call to be the new pastor at Bethlehem Ev. Lutheran Congregation of Manassas, Virginia. This congregation has 120 members. 80% of the people living around the church in Manassas are from Central America and speak Spanish. The congregation wants to reach out to these people with the Gospel and start holding Spanish worship services. Pastor Welch is bilingual and conducted Spanish worship services in his former congregation in Arizona before he came to River Falls. WELS Mission News Every spring, the WELS Board for Home Missions (BHM) and BHM Executive Committee prioritize requests for new Home Missions and ministry enhancements. In 2018, 23 requests were received. On April 13, 2018, the BHM approved support for seven new mission congregations as well as support to enhance mission-minded ministry at seven other congregations. The Home Mission Enhancements are the following: 7

8 Crown of Life, Corona, California This multi-site mission currently has four different locations for worship. Home Mission funding is supporting a third pastor assigned from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. Faith, Anchorage, Alaska A second bilingual pastor will allow Faith to enhance their Hispanic ministry. Grace, Seattle, Washington Two congregations will be combining to restart their ministry in the heart of Seattle. Funding will allow a full-time pastor to again serve at Grace. Ascension, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Remaining members of Ascension are ready to restart their congregation. They have demonstrated they are willing to take on ministry responsibilities and support outreach efforts that will be guided by their next pastor. Shepherd of the Hills, Knoxville, Tennessee A group of members are ready to restart their congregation after a longer-term pastoral vacancy. With the congregation back on its feet, they hope to begin a preschool ministry in order to jump start their outreach efforts. Trinity, Waukesha, Wisconsin Trinity hopes to reach out to a large population of Hispanics in their community by bringing in a bilingual pastor to lead the ministry. Epiphany and First, Racine, Wisconsin These two Racine congregations currently operate a joint Lutheran Elementary school. Home Mission funding will allow the 8

9 school to call a staff minister or teacher to coordinate outreach efforts to prospective church families. St. Croix Lutheran Coming Events Chili & Pie Fundraiser and Fall Concert at St. Croix Lutheran, Sunday, October 28. Enjoy homemade chili and a variety of pie in the commons prior to the fall concert. Dinner is served at 4:30 pm. Proceeds will be used toward the purchase of a new drum set. Stay for the fall music concert featuring the Crusader band, choirs, Croixaliers, and Oakdale Avenue Jazz band starting at 6:30 pm.
