3 Editor s Preface Chapel Talks for Christian Children was designed as a worship tool for children. It can be adapted to a variety of settings and applications, including Christian elementary schools, Sunday schools, vacation Bible schools, and children s sermons. Each chapel talk includes an object lesson with a summary of how it might be presented. Each lesson also contains a Bible truth and several applications (Discussions and Applications) of the text to daily living. The short order of service that accompanies each lesson may be duplicated for distribution among the worshipers. Permission to copy the order of service is automatically granted to the purchasing organization. Such permission is not transferable. This series of 42 chapel talks focuses attention on Jesus and his teachings. Worship leaders may want to create a permanent bulletin board on which children can post a collection of Jesus teachings, using symbols or writing projects. Student art can be used to decorate the service folders. May the Lord of the church bless you and the students he has given into your care as you use this Bible resource. 6 A Fishing Lesson Mark 1:17 Suggested for Pentecost 11 Visual Materials an assortment of nets (butterfly net, small fishnet, large fishing net or picture of one) Object Lesson Display the nets, except for the large fishing net. Discuss the uses of the nets. What usually happens to animals caught in nets? Conclude by showing the large fishing net (or picture). Ask the children to think about how many fish could be caught in a net this big. Bible Truth Explain that Jesus had just begun his ministry. Four of the first disciples Jesus called to help him were fishermen. Jesus came up to Peter and Andrew as they were casting their nets into the Sea of Galilee. Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men (Mark 1:17). Immediately, Peter and Andrew left their nets and followed Jesus. Next, Jesus came upon James and John. They too were working with their fishing nets. They also followed Jesus immediately. In Luke s account of the calling of these disciples, we learn that Jesus performed a miracle the same day: he caused so many fish to be caught in their nets that two fishing boats were filled and began to sink from the weight of the fish. Jesus had called men who really knew about fishing. For James and John, who left behind their father and his hired men in their boat, fishing was the only life they knew. That s why Jesus used the example of fishing for men. But what kind of net would they use to catch people? Jesus had the answer for them, and for us too. God s Word does the work of the net for us. In fact, his net has already caught us! God allows us, as he did his disciples, to cast out the net of his Word. We do this by telling others of God s love for us. God s Word does the work; we are just the workers. Think back to those nets we saw earlier. What usually happens when fish are caught in a net? Do you know what is so wonderful about God s fishing net? Instead of death, it brings eternal life to all! Let s remember to go fishing for God. 1 Discussions and Applications 1. What would you tell someone who doesn t know about Jesus? 2. What do you think Jesus was showing his disciples by giving them such a great catch of fish?
