Harp 7 206:26 28, 32 4 Instead of God sending 27 sickness and death, He destroys them, and brings to light immortality. There are evil beliefs, often called evil spirits; but 1 these evils are not Spirit, for there is no evil in Spirit. Because God is Spirit, evil becomes more apparent and 3 obnoxious proportionately as we advance spiritually, until it disappears from our lives. Spirit, 21 God, is heard when the senses are silent. Music, rhythm of head and heart 24 Mental melodies and strains of sweetest music supersede conscious sound. Music is the rhythm of head and heart. 27 Mortal mind is the harp of many strings, discoursing either discord or harmony according as the hand, which sweeps over it, is human or divine :16, 25 Harmony is produced by its Principle, is controlled by it and abides with it. Divine Principle is the Life 18 of man. Man s happiness is not, therefore, at the disposal of physical sense. Truth is not Harmony natural contaminated by error. Harmony in man is as beautiful 21 as in music, and discord is unnatural, unreal. To be master of chords and discords, the science of music must be understood. Left to the decisions 27 of material sense, music is liable to be misapprehended and lost in confusion. Controlled by belief, instead of understanding, music is, must be, imper- 30 fectly expressed. So man, not understanding the Science of being, thrusting aside his divine Principle as incomprehensible, is abandoned to conjectures, left in 1 the hands of ignorance, placed at the disposal of illusions, subjected to material sense which is discord. A discon- 3 tented, discordant mortal is no more a man than discord is music. Ancient Israel s Got Talent Oh! The language of Spirit is so good, Helping God daily to be understood, Making it so clear That harmony is here :23 Though the way is dark in mortal sense, divine Life 24 and Love illumine it, destroy the unrest of mortal thought, the fear of death, and the supposed reality of error. Christian Science, contradicting sense, maketh the valley to bud 27 and blossom as the rose :10 12 Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony. The calm and exalted 12 thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace. David Spirit 3

And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. 36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. Modern Nazareth is a city, but first-century Nazareth was just a small town or village. Graham Boulding 15 6:29 7 It is believed by many that a certain magistrate, 30 who lived in the time of Jesus, left this record: His rebuke is fearful. The strong language of our Master confirms this description. 1 The only civil sentence which he had for error was, Get thee behind me, Satan. Still stronger evidence 3 that Jesus reproof was pointed and pungent is found in his own words, showing the necessity for such forcible utterance, when he cast out devils and healed 6 the sick and sinning. The relinquishment of error deprives material sense of its false claims :28 32 If it becomes necessary to startle mortal mind to break its dream of suffering, vehemently tell your patient that 30 he must awake. Turn his gaze from the false evidence of the senses to the harmonious facts of Soul and immortal being. Awaken the patient :7, (to 2 nd.) Should you thus startle mortal mind in order to remove its beliefs, afterwards make known 9 to the patient your motive for this shock, showing him that it was to facilitate recovery. 15 Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside 18 Him. There is no disease :20 23, 29 2 Suffer no claim of sin or of sickness to grow upon 21 the thought. Dismiss it with an abiding conviction that it is illegitimate, because you know that God is no more the author of sickness than He is of sin. SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy :7 Christ, Truth, was demonstrated through Jesus to prove the power of 9 Spirit over the flesh, to show that Truth is made manifest by its effects upon the human mind and body, healing sickness and destroying sin :9 11 Christ, 19, He 9 Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness. Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ is the divine idea of God the Holy Ghost, 21 or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle, Love, and leading into all truth. Holy Ghost or Comforter He was appointed 24 to speak God s word and to appear to mortals in such a form of humanity as they could understand as well as perceive. Christ Jesus Meet the incipient stages 30 of disease with as powerful mental opposition as a legislator would employ to defeat the passage of an inhuman law. Rise in the conscious strength of the 1 spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit. Treatment of disease :10 If Spirit or the power of divine Love bear witness to the truth, this is the ultimatum, the scientific 12 way, and the healing is instantaneous. T 14 John 3:1 8 here was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. BIBLE BIOS THE BIBLE Section SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy 15 II Corinthians 3:18 we we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. To discern the rhythm of Spirit and to be holy, thought must be purely spiritual :4 Spiritual ideas apprehended 21 94:1 3 1 Jesus taught but one God, one Spirit, who makes man in the image and likeness of Himself, of Spirit, not of 3 matter :28 Spirit blesses man, but man cannot tell whence it cometh. By it the sick are healed, the sorrowing are 30 comforted, and the sinning are reformed. These are the effects of one universal God, the invisible good dwelling in eternal Science : The Greek word for wind (pneuma) is used also for spirit, as in the passage in John s Gospel, the third chap- 3 ter, where we read: The wind [pneuma] bloweth where it listeth.... So is every one that is born of the Spirit [pneuma]. Here the original word is the same in both 6 cases, yet it has received different translations, as in other passages in this same chapter and elsewhere in the New Testament. This shows how our Master had constantly 9 to employ words of material significance in order to unfold spiritual thoughts :32 5 Willingness to become as a little child and 1 to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea. Gladness to leave the false landmarks 3 and joy to see them disappear, this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony. The purification of sense and self is a proof of progress. NICODEMUS AND THE LIMITED WARDROBE PREDICAMENT You must be worn again... BIBLE BIOS Nicodemus was a member of the Sanhedrin ( san- HEE-dren ) the official Jewish supreme court, which included 70 high priests, scribes, and elders, and a High Priest who presided over all. It was surprising that such a highly trained, important man as Nicodemus sought out a man from Galilee with no formal education :23 The calm, strong currents of true spirituality, the 24 manifestations of which are health, purity, and selfimmolation, must deepen human experience, until the beliefs of material existence are seen to be a bald imposi- 27 tion, and sin, disease, and death give everlasting place to the scientific demonstration of divine Spirit and to God s spiritual, perfect man. THE GOSPEL OF JOHN is known for having a deep message. The Greek word for again in the phrase born again also means from above. People are apparently brought into the world by their parents, but to enter the kingdom of God, people must be brought forth by God. So Jesus is talking about a radical rebirth through regeneration, recognition of spiritual identity, and God s Spirit pouring forth. listeth: wishes; wants to landmarks: well-known features of a landscape disposition: inclination; frame of mind precipitate: hasten; bring about quickly self-immolation: unselfishness; self-sacrifice Spirit 5

And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. 34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Cæsarea : The divine Science taught in the original language of the Bible came through inspiration, and needs inspiration to be understood :31 Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God. It shows the superiority of faith by works 1 over faith in words. Its ideas are expressed only in new tongues; and these are interpreted by the translation of 3 the spiritual original into the language which human thought can comprehend :28 30 All we correctly know of Spirit comes from God, divine Principle, and is learned through Christ and Christian 30 Science :11 Only by the illumination of the spiritual sense, can 12 the light of understanding be thrown upon this Science, because Science reverses the evidence before the material senses and furnishes the eternal interpretation of God and 15 man :32 3 Christianity causes men to turn naturally from matter 1 to Spirit, as the flower turns from darkness to light. Man then appropriates those things which eye hath 3 not seen nor ear heard. What can you do to foster the illumination of your spiritual sense? 18 I Timothy 4:12 be be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.... Set an example for other followers by what you say and do, as well as by your love, faith, and purity. 7 Bar riers in Peru Breaking courtesy photo By Timothy HAVE YOU EVER STRUGGLED to speak in a different language? Maybe you know the feeling of having no idea how to say what you are thinking. I have had my fair share of those moments since I grew up speaking English and had relatively few experiences to practice the Spanish I learned in school. A similar situation occurred during the Pentecost, which is described in the second chapter of Acts in the Bible. There, Jesus disciples were confronted with a situation in which many different languages were spoken in the same place. The disciples had an important message to convey and an absolute trust in God to guide them. They were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4) and this allowed everybody to hear that message in their own language, clearly expressing the one divine Mind that united them. This past summer, I had a small taste of this kind of divinely guided communication. This experience was a wonderful proof to me of the loving care that divine Mind bestows on us every day. I arrived in Peru with a group of young Christian Scientists and three adult leaders. We were going to construct a school for a village just outside of Cusco. We also planned to teach children in a neighboring village during that time. Three friends and I volunteered to teach music, and we spent hours before the trip preparing. Right before the trip, however, I began to feel nervous. I knew very little Spanish, and much of the group did not know any at all. The leaders had passed out a sheet with some basic phrases, but they were looking to those of us who had learned Spanish in school to be the main communicators. I worried that we would not be able to communicate with these kids effectively and would miss an amazing opportunity to both teach and learn from them. Then, once we arrived in Peru, another teaching group was combined with ours, throwing off our carefully made plans at the last minute. As we drove to the school, we frantically wrote down new lesson plans. Then there was yet another change: we were going to teach different age groups than originally planned! We came into the school disorganized, nervous, and with essentially no specific plans. We first taught a group of fifth graders. When I was supposed to speak with them, my mind froze and the little Spanish I knew escaped me. We were able to continue the lesson by teaching some simple dances that didn t require too much talking. But as it went on, I decided to rely on God for help even though I d recently had some questions about Christian Science, and even doubts that I could really rely on God. I remembered the spiritual theme our class had decided on for the trip, Loving through the eyes of God, and I asked myself: What is your purpose in being here? Can you throw aside your own doubts and trust in God, Love, to guide and shepherd you? I realized that I needed to be open to trusting in Truth. That meant viewing these children as God saw them: perfect, upright, and loved. Gradually, I felt calm and confident in our group s ability to love and do good at this school. I d been thinking about led to a clarity of thought that I had rarely felt before. My doubt faded as the first lesson went on, and I was able to speak mostly in Spanish throughout our time with the fifth graders. By the end, most of the kids were having a fantastic time. And afterward, things got even better. We next taught second graders and kindergarteners, and we all saw the exuberant love and grace they expressed. By striving to love through the eyes of God, as Jesus did, I gained an entirely new, spiritual perspective of who these kids were. While we were teaching the last two groups, I found that the spiritual ideas I d been thinking about led to a clarity of thought that I had rarely felt before. I was able to talk with the kids easily in fact, I had never before been able to speak Spanish so fluently! Everyone else was also able to communicate, even though many of them did not know Spanish to begin with. The experience reminded me of a quote from Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy: When the heart speaks, however simple the words, its language is always acceptable to those who have hearts (p. 262). By being willing to trust in Love and see these kids as God s children who certainly have huge hearts! we were able to have a fantastic time with them.
