January 2016 Dear Friends, Living each day as if it were the last day of our life is not a bad philosophy. Living each day as if it were the first day of our life might be a better one. This is a new year with exciting new possibilities. The old year is gone. The mistakes we made, the obstacles we have overcome are now in the past. A new year has arrived. Every January 1st of every year, we mark a new year in our lives. Many people begin it with New Year resolutions of improvements and commitments. They often retract or delete them before the end of January. Therefore, I thought I would share with you something eternal and unchanging, the Word of God. Here are some Scripture verses for the New Year. Have a blessed one. New Birth - A Living Hope - 1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Hope for the Future - Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. A New Creation - 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! A New Heart - Ezekiel 36:25-27 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. And I will give you a new heart with new and right desires, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony heart of sin and give you a new, obedient heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so you will obey my laws and do whatever I command. Forgetting the Past - Philippians 3:13-14 No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven. Wait on the Lord - Isaiah 40:31 Yet those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. God's Timing is Perfect - Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. (NIV) Each New Day is Special - Lamentations 3:22-23 The unfailing love of the LORD never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies are new every morning. In His Love, Pastor Max 3

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS It s Here! A New Year! 2016! Are you excited? Are you making New Year Resolutions? I know I am! I m going to lose 40 pounds, work out every day, never eat junk again (especially potato chips) again, drink less coffee, go to Sunday School every Sunday and stop biting my lip! Do you have a whole list like I do? Are you hoping to stick to it? I know it s hard. I may have to modify my list a bit. But I ll tell you what, some things, the most important things will be a priority. The most important being Going to Sunday School!!! Now granted, it s my job to be here, but even if it wasn t, I would be here. I was raised in a Sunday School family. My Mom and Dad both taught Sunday School and we were there every week. Even if we were on vacation we would go, and have to bring back a bulletin so we could get credit! Had to have perfect attendance to get your Sunday School pin every year. Lol. It was a lot easier 40 years ago, with a lot less conflicts with activities on Sunday mornings. But the priority was there. It was important to attend Sunday School and learn about our Jesus Christ who lived and died for our sins. If it hadn t been important to my parents, I probably wouldn t be sitting here writing this article and working for the church. Boy am I glad it was. It made me who I am today. Please think about this as you roll over in bed, and think that church will have to wait for another week. Your children will thank you, just as I thank my Mom and Dad, for modeling faithful church involvement for them. If you haven t been to Sunday School in a while, you will be surprised by the changes we have made.. Sunday School is now using the Rotation Model. Children are learning by seeing, hearing, role playing and creating. We just finished our Gift of Jesus rotation, where the children learned how to swaddle baby Jesus, saw a video depicting the birth of Jesus, played games, and baked candy cane cookies while learning Bible verses, and so much more. I am greatly impressed by the talents of our volunteers and their eagerness to help as part of the Sunday School team. What a blessing to the church and to me! Please come out and see what is happening in Sunday School. You won t be disappointed! Liz Bonner Christian Education Director Nursery News Happy New Year! This fall we learned about God creating the world, Noah s faith in God and about Joseph s colorful coat. Those of you who have stopped in during arts and crafts time seen that Joseph s coat was not the only colorful thing in the room. The floor loved being colorful also. We celebrated the fall harvest and God s provision with a pumpkin prayer while I carved Christian symbols into the pumpkin. In November we learned about the people at the first thanksgiving dinner. The children each made a What I am Thankful for turkey that was hung in the hallway for all to enjoy. Finally, December was a lot of fun as we learned about how Jesus came to earth as a baby to save us from our sins. We also learned that we share gifts on Christmas because God gave us the greatest gift of all. This month, we have some children who will be turning 3 years old. We welcome all of the new born children to join us in their own safe area in the nursery. They will learn a lot from our three year olds. We also would like to formally welcome Julianne Wylie as the new nursery Assistant Director. She has been working as the assistant since November of The nursery staff have been asked to make a wish list for the needs of the nursery. If you would like make a donation to the nursery, the list is posted on the wall just outside the nursery door. The children will appreciate your generosity and enjoy the gifts for years to come. Please feel free to stop by and visit us as we love to say hi to all who come by. Donna Fritz 4

2016 The Year Ahead in the LUMC Library Happy New Year! The youth had a very busy December. In December the youth participated in the Advent Dinner, the annual Christmas Choir Concert and a group event in partnership with Sanctuary UMC. All the youth had a blast. Our focus for November and December was doing what you can. Each of the youth was given a $10 bill and was challenged with doing something good with it. This was an open-ended assignment and they could do anything with the $10, as long as it had a positive impact on someone else. They were not limited to $10, if they were able to turn their $10 into $20 that was even better. The final Youth Group in December was spent baking Christmas cookies and discussing the outcome of this project. Many local charities, organizations and individual families currently facing tragedy benefitted from our project. Thank you to the Youth and their families for their participation. Musical practice begins on Sunday, January 3rd from 2PM to 4PM. It continues every Sunday from 2PM to 4PM until March. If you or your youth is interested in participating, there are lots of jobs for all kinds of people so please speak with Paul Bonner, Darren Johnson or Brent. If there is a Youth out there that would like to participate in the Youth Musical and they are not signed up, please let us know. In God s Love, Brent Information about important events and issues that relate to the both the local and global church will be available for browsing in the LUMC Library. Members of each local United Methodist Church are encouraged to be informed on what we believe and how we live out these beliefs as a connectional body that reaches across the globe. Most importantly, each member is called to prayerful support of the delegates from local churches who are elected to participate in the deliberations at these meetings. Be informed and pray that the Holy Spirit will guide the delegates and that the power of God s love will prevail in these proceedings. In May, the United Methodist Church will engage in discussion and debate about church polity, doctrine and the structure of our denomination at General Conference. In June, the Jurisdictional Conferences will meet to determine the boundaries of episcopal areas and elect and assign bishops to oversee each area. Eastern PA Annual Conference meets also in June, just before the Jurisdictional Conference, to conduct the annual business of the conference, including worship, ordination, and dealing with resolutions. Look for information on events and issues on the Periodicals and Information bookcase. The United Methodist Women have a reading program providing inspirational reading, study books and other resource material on the UMW Resource Center bookcase. Some of these materials may be borrowed for reading at your convenience. See the bulletin board outside the library for information and news about our Conference and the United Methodist Church and to find out what s new in the library. 6 DISH-CUSSIONS - WEDNESDAY AT 6:30 P.M. IN JANUARY WHY? Making Sense of God s Will Come and join us for food for the body and food for the soul. Every Wednesday night in January will we hold Dish-Cussions in Stringer. Dinner starts at 6:30 P.M., so Bring a Cover Dish. Lessons and discussions begins at 7:00 P.M. Where is God when tragedy and suffering strike? When the ground shakes, and a poor nation s economy is destroyed; when the waters rise, washing away a community s hopes and dreams; when a child suffers neglect and abuse; when violence tears apart nations; where is God? If God is all powerful, and if each one of us is a beloved child of God, then how can God allow tragedy and suffering to infest his creation? In Why? Making Sense of God's Will, best-selling author Adam Hamilton brings fresh insight to the age-old question of how to understand the will of God. Rejecting simplistic answers and unexamined assumptions, he lays out core ideas for comprehending God s plan for the world, including: God will not take away our free will, even when we use it to grieve him. God will never abandon us, especially in the midst of our suffering. While God is not the author of suffering, God will bring blessing out of tragedy. January 6 Session 1 Why do the Innocent Suffer? January 13 Session 2 Why do My Prayers Go Unanswered? January 20 Session 3 Why Can't I See God's Will for My Life? January 27 Session 4 Why God's Love Prevails * Soup Night* Congratulations! Thanks to the efforts of United Methodists across the connection, we've reached 90% of our goal of $75 million to combat suffering and death from malaria. We're almost there. Help us reach $75 million by making a donation and make a difference in the life of a child, adult or family. With your help, we can make reach our goal! Visit us at Take the #Give10 Challenge by donating $10 today, and the People of The United Methodist Church will work together to make the last 10% of the goal. The United Methodist Church s top legislative body will meet in Portland, Oregon, May 10-20, 2016 In prayerful support of the delegates who will participate in this important conference, the bishops of the Annual Conferences are encouraged to hold a Prayer Day (24 hour vigil) for their conference in preparation for General Conference. January 6 (Epiphany Day) is the date for the Eastern PA Conference. Bishop Johnson s Call to Prayer for General Conference is posted on the LUMC Library bulletin board. 6

It won t be long now.the annual LUMC Women s Retreat is just around the corner - January 29-31, The Reverend Dory Newcomer is preparing a special weekend for us. Her topic this year is Giving the Gift of Listening: Ever wonder what to say when a friend is having a hard time? Ever wish you could do something to make things better for her or him? Well, there is something you can do: LISTEN! When we are hurting, most of us don t want suggestions from others as much as we want someone to help us hear our best selves, and also to hear from God. Dory will captivate and inspire you throughout the weekend. Just ask anyone who has attended in the past. And for $95, you get a weekend at Camp Innabah with 5 deliciously prepared meals, a cozy room for 2 nights (comes with roommates), spiritual growth, prayer support, fun, laughter, and inspiration. Invite a friend, neighbor, sister, mother, or daughter. Please sign up on the bulletin board outside Stringer. The deadline is January 11, 2016, and payment is due by January 17, Carpooling is available. Any questions, contact me at or at sandik416@msn.com. If you missed it, the th Annual Choir Christmas concert lived up to its reputation as an enjoyable holiday event that brings the church family together in the spirit praise and thanksgiving for the birth of our savior Jesus. This concert, which marked the 12th and final Christmas concert for our beloved former Director of music Edwin Roberts, put the full breath of the LUMC music ministry on display. Attendees were treated an array of musical selections including traditional choral pieces, instrumental numbers, vocal ensembles, hand bells, contemporary worship, a carol sing-along and even original compositions and arrangements by our own Edwin Roberts. The praise team even treated the crowd to ruckus rendition of Born is the King to close the evening. The reception that followed the concert was equally enjoyable as the church family gathered in Stringer Auditorium to fellowship over wonderful homemade treats. Thanks goes out to all of the choirs, the youth ensemble, bell choir, the praise team for all the work they did preparing for the concert and performing. Special thanks goes the Ed Roberts. whom God has seen fit to call into other areas of service. Ed instituted the annual Christmas concert and it is a tradition that is sure to live on at LUMC for many years to come. And finally, But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing (2 Corinthians 2:14-15). 7

PRAYER & PRAISE BREAKFAST After prayerful consideration, I have decided to discontinue the Prayer & Praise Breakfasts after 2015 due to lack of participation. 9 Like any large gathering of people, our church is often graced with the presence of individuals with whom you are not familiar. Sometimes, the people are simply visitors or attending a special event. Sometimes there are people church shopping Some people even decide to return and become a permanent part of our church family. If you have been paying attention to the people around you in church you may have noticed a young man who have started attending regularly with his wife and adorable little son. This man, as you may already know, is our new Director of Music/Choir Director Francis Coates. Francis (Frank) Coates III has served as Pianist, Organist, and Music Director for over 15 years. He has taught music in a variety of educational environments and has over 10 years of experience in education. He is a professional pianist and composer specializing in contemporary piano and orchestration. Francis attended University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA and University of Maryland Baltimore County studying Music Composition, Music Education and Managerial Science and has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and is expected to complete his MBA in June He is married to Rachel Coates, a scientist and chemical engineer. They are the proud parents of a two year old son, Jackson. If you have not taken the opportunity to do so already, place make an effort to extend a personal welcome to Frank and Rachel. Offer your assistance as they make the transition to this new calling in their lives. Hold them up in continual prayer as they seek to serve the Lord by ministering at LUMC through music. From the editor Each new year presents us with an opportunity to start something new. To put the failures and successes of the previous year behind us and set new goals for the year ahead. Whether it be eating healthily, saving money, starting a new hobby or finally getting on top of the jungle they call a back yard, many people choose to set goals in areas that they believe will improve their lives. Despite our best effort to follow through with the plan, the overwhelming majority of us falter within the first month of the process. In light of this truth, we must ask ourselves, why. Why can t we follow through with our plans? Why do we falter and abandon the course so quickly? Maybe we are setting the wrong goals. Maybe there is a flaw in each of us that prohibits our success. Maybe, and I believe this to be the answer to our question, it is because we try to go at it alone. We don t have an adequate support system to keep us on task, encourage us and hold us accountable. And so, we fail. The necessity of accountability and support is evident in many aspects of our lives but is too often ignored when it comes to our spiritual walk. Moses had Aaron and Miriam. Joshua had Caleb. David had Jonathan. Paul had Barnabas, Silas, Timothy, John Mark, Peter, etc. Even Jesus gathered 12 partners to support him in his humanity. My point here is that if we are to be successful in our Christian walks we cannot attempt to live the Christian life alone. We must support each other. It s not simply as good idea, it is essential. If you have not already done so, consider joining one of the many small groups offered here at LUMC. Don t know where to start? Try attending a Class Meeting, Dish-cussions or one of the morning or evening bible studies. We are a community of believers. More than that, we are a family. And, in our family, no one should ever walk the Christian walk alone. Soli Deo Gloria! 9
