3 Dear Friends, June, 2014 Besides high school graduations and the official first day of summer, the month of June contains an awesome day called Father s Day. Well, it s awesome to me because I am really blessed being a dad! I love that one daughter calls me dad and the still calls me daddy. It reminds me of an archaic joke: First our children call us da, then dada, then daddy, then dad, and then they call us collect. I know children today would say, I don t get it, what s collect? Although God truly doesn t have gender, I love the image of God as the good father that Jesus taught in the parable of prodigal son in Luke 15: You should read it to refresh yourself in understanding God s incredible love. We are both the prodigal and the elder son, but the true focus is on God as the good father. There are four things we can see about God in the image of the good father. First, we can see that the father respects or allows some freedom or autonomy for his son. He had to loosen the rope of control on the son in order for him to learn about life, to mature. It seems children (we) learn so much more from hard mistakes than from warnings or controls. God wants us to follow Him by choice not because we have to do so. When we realize our need for Him, we appreciate Him much more and love Him more dearly. Second, the father allows his son to face the consequences of his decisions and choices. God could rescue us from every mess we get ourselves into. In many cases He does, but not until we realize the consequences so that we come back to Him. Third, the father was a forgiving father. He did not forget about his son. He hoped he would come back. He waited and watched for him to return. And when he saw his son from a distance, he ran out to him. He was not angry, but very happy that the son returned. God s forgiveness is always available ( God s mercies are new every morning ) when we acknowledge our sin, repent, and return our focus on Him. In fact, God not only forgives us but throws a celebration. Fourth, as a Heavenly Father, God cares enough about His children to get involved in their lives. He gives us freedom to choose but does not ignore our problems. The good father in the parable knows that there is a problem between the son who came home and the one who had stayed behind and been faithful. We are into the ministry of reconciliation and God will help to reconcile us with each other. I love this parable because I believe it has made me a better dad and daddy. But even more, it has shown the amazing love God has for us. God bless, and Happy Father s Day. In God s Love, Pastor Max The Prayer Ministry is holding a Prayer Walk on Wednesday, June 4th at 10 A.M. We will walk throughout our community praying for the residents. 7 Native American Ministries Sunday & Bus Trip Although the Sunday May 4 was designated by the UMC as Native American Ministries Sunday, we are tentatively planning an event in the fall at LUMC. Your offering for Native American ministries may be given at that time, using the special envelope marked NATIVE AMER- ICAN MINISTRIES. Or, you may write Native American Ministries on the memo line of your check. On Tuesday, June 24, 2014, the EPA Conference Committee on Native American Ministries (CoNAM) is planning a bus trip to Carlisle PA to tour and visit the site of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. It was founded in 1879 as a boarding school for American Indians by Richard Pratt to remove them from their savage culture, immerse them in white man s culture and teach them a trade so they could assimilate into society. The school was built on an abandoned military barracks in Carlisle PA and existed for almost 40 years until the Army took over the grounds during WWI. You will learn on this tour how the students were often torn from their families and forced to give up their culture in order to be educated. One of the most famous students is the legendary hero Jim Thorpe. The bus will leave from EPA Conference Office, Valley Forge, PA, at 9:00 am and return at 6:00 pm. The cost for the trip is $30.00, which includes the bus and the site tour. See more details on the bulletin board outside Stringer Auditorium. For more on Native American Ministries, see Linda Jones, our local church NA representative, or Verna Colliver. Volunteers in Motion The Volunteers in Motion Day of Service was a huge success! Four hundred volunteers from our community came together from 23 different churches to serve at 40 different locations on May 3, volunteers from LUMC served at three locations doing yard work, tree/bush removal and trimming, garage cleaning and removal of unwanted household items. Items were donated to IMPACT Thrift stores. Thank you to all who participated. Adult Dine-Around The June 5th Dine-Around will be held at Fiores, 2333 W. Main Street, Lansdale (rear of Ralph's Corner Shopping Center) at 11:30 A.M. Please sign up on the bulletin board outside Stringer Auditorium and join us that day. It's a great way to socialize with your fellow church members. If you need a ride, please call Marlene Ney at Annual United Methodist Women's Picnic All the ladies who attend Lansdale United Methodist Church are invited to attend the annual UMW Covered-dish Picnic. You need not be a circle member to attend. It will be held at 6:00 P.M. on Monday, June 2nd at the home of Marlene Ney, 320 Richardson Road, Lansdale (Montgomery Twp.). However, if it rains it will be held in Stringer Auditorium in the church. If you are uncertain where to go, please call Marlene at after 4:00 P.M. that day. Prayer & Praise Breakfast As many of our church ladies know, our monthly Prayer & Praise Breakfast is a very pleasant experience. Please join us on Thursday, June 26th at 8:30 A.M. at Franconi s near Redner s as we share a meal, devotions and prayer. Questions??? As I sit here in mid-may writing this article for June, it hits me that Bright Beginnings has exactly one more month of school. On June 12 th, the children will be having their final program and graduation! This year has just flown by. May was a busy month for the children at Bright Beginnings. We finished up our Ladybug unit, and took the ladybugs outside to fly away. Then we started the Butterfly unit. The children got to watch the caterpillars make their chrysalis and then emerge as beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies. It is always an amazing process to watch. We had a school-wide field trip to the Elmwood Park Zoo on May 29 th. It was such a fun day, and a wonderful way to end the year with all the children and families together. Our final program is on June 12 th. The children will be singing all their greatest hits from the year. Then the older children will put on their graduation hats and sing Kindergarten Here I Come! We always have a packed house, and the parents just love seeing their little ones walk off that stage with their diploma! Bright Beginnings will be taking registrations for September through the summer. If you would like to register, or know of someone who might be interested, please contact me and I will help you out in whatever way possible.
