2 Hi All, It is so exciting to look forward and realize that we are coming into the fall season. The harvest is near, the weather is perfect, and it s time for a Harvest Homecoming. October 2 nd will be a wonderful day for our church. We will celebrate God in the great outdoors, singing our praise to Him and letting Him reign down His love on us. The morning worship will start at 10:30AM 7007 South State Road 121. We will have several guest singers and musicians. Oct. 2 nd is also World Communion Sunday, so we will celebrate Holy Communion together. After worship we will have a wonderful feast. God has provided us with a bounty of blessings and we will eat several of those blessings. The meat and drinks will be provided, and we will have salads, covered dishes and desert. I m going to guess there will be something in those covered dishes! Please invite everyone you know. We expect to have around three hundred people there to worship God and to celebrate our lives together. Don t be bashful; invite your neighbors, your barber, your grocer, your hair stylist, your doctor, lawyer, and Indian chief (I m sure some of those are supposed to be capitalized oh well). I ask you to pray about our church and how we might look forward to the next five to ten years and see if we might set some goals that will lead us into a new level of participation in our church. You are the church, not this beautiful building, not the music, not the preaching, not even the fellowship, Y O U are the church. People outside our doors look at you and see who we, the First United Methodist Church of Connersville, are. We are a bunch of sinners who gather together to lead people to Christ, to feed the flock, and to serve others. What more is God asking you to do to that end? He loves you and so do I. Pastor Dave 2 CELEBRATION - HOMECOMING Who October 2, 201l, 10:30AM Every member of C ville FUMC Where 7007 South S.R. #121 What When Worship and FUn Oct. 2 nd 10:30AM We will have our Sunday morning worship outside at 10:30AM Oct. 2 nd. We have enjoyed the altar flowers, birthday and get well cards, visits, and the Minister calling on us. Thank you so much! Fran McLaughlin & the late Hilda Sefton ***************************************** Dear Connersville First United Methodist Church, Thank you so much for the Flowered Cross for my mother, Helen S. Rusterholz. I also want to thank everyone who helped my mother over the years getting in and out of Church. She loved coming and being a part of the congregation. She came even when it was terribly hard for her. Sincerely Steve & Susan Kehl ****************************************** I feel I must thank all my friends from First United Methodist and others in Connersville for all my lovely birthday cards. At last count I received 40 cards. A large number of those were from members of First United Methodist. The word must have gotten around that I would be 99 years old this month and still going strong. I look forward to attending the Tasty Luncheon. I have fond memories of working on many of the committees in past years. Fondly, Margie Huber 3

4 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH For Bicentennial Book Following the years of the Methodist Circuit Riders, a lot was purchased in 1825 for a church on John Conner s 1 st Plot on 6 th Street. That building was sold in 1872 when the congregation moved to a large auditorium on the second floor of the Claypool Opera House on Central Avenue. Today the First United Methodist Church sits on lot nine of John Conner s North addition to Connersville purchased in April, On Sunday, September 7, 1890, the building known as the First Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated under the leadership of Pastor Robert Roberts as well as the trustees and building committee including: William Newkirk, Leander Bower, Joseph Riley, Alvin Barrows, Charles Roehl, Lewis Edwards, James McIntosh, Edwin McIntosh, and Edwin Hawkins at a total cost of $35,523. Originally, no plans were made for a basement, but by 1897 the congregation had identified the need for more space. The Social Circle, a women s organization, (bicentennial continued) directed and completed the project for a room under the northeast corner of the church with a stairway leading down from the vestibule. A kitchen was added later, and the entire area was used for prayer meetings, Epworth League, and Sunday School classes as well as business and social meetings of the church. In October 1920, with the leadership of the Rev. Dr. John McFall, a committee approved plans for putting a basement under the entire building. A new heating system, kitchen, two large church school rooms, and a spacious fellowship hall were furnished in the new basement, and the walls of the Sanctuary were redecorated. These projects were completed in September 1921 at a cost of approximately $40,000. In May 1939, at a Uniting Conference, the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and the Methodist protestant Church united to (bicentennial continued) become the Methodist Church. In 1940, in preparation for the building s 50 th anniversary, under the leadership of the Rev. W.C. Patrick, the First Methodist Church embarked on a program of improvements in the church building including installation of new heating system, remodeled choir loft, new carpeting and pulpit chairs, and installation of a new Moeller organ (which is still in use today). (Bicentennial continued) In the early 1950 s the need for expanded educational facilities grew. With the leadership of Rev. W. D. Koehnlein and the trustees, a very successful building campaign was launched, and a ground breaking service was held on Sunday, April 8, The addition provided twelve classrooms, office space, a chapel, a lounge with a kitchenette, and a large Fellowship Hall in the basement with new restrooms, kitchen, and storage space at a cost of approximately $155,000. The educational building was consecrated on Sunday, February 17, In 1959, a Cry Room for infants and toddlers during church and in which bridal parties might dress was built and furnished by the Friendship Sunday School Class. In 1964, the original outside wooden doors and inner swinging doors were replaced with outside and inside double insulated glass doors. In 1966, during the pastorate of Dr. Floyd Cook, the Sanctuary underwent a major redecoration including new carpet, pews, lights, chancel furnishings, and the removal of a moveable partition at the rear of the Sanctuary in order to greatly increase the seating capacity. The work was completed and dedicated in December Air conditioning was added in In 1972, the church purchased and razed the Smith building directly south of the church in order to provide a parking lot. A ramp was built on the south side of the church for better accessibility. An elevator was added in 2003 for better access to the building. In 1988, the kitchen was remodeled with assistance from the United Methodist Women as well as redecorating Fellowship Hall in In 2004, the church remodeled two classrooms in order to accommodate the Community Free Clinic. In addition, the church provides space for the In the Blind Foundation to conduct classes for visually impaired individuals. The Sunday morning worship service has been broadcast live to the Community via local cable TV each Sunday since 1973, and a website was established in The church is very active in the community by providing food vouchers and personal hygiene items, supporting outreach programs throughout the community, and providing Sunday School classes for all ages, Bible Study, Prayer Group, Chancel Choir, Bell Choir, Children s Choir, Vacation Bible School, and Crafty Ladies. The United Methodist Women are very active in the church as well as the community and have served an annual Tasty Luncheon as their primary fund raiser since

5 (Bicentennial continued) Under the leadership of Pastor David Galbraith, the current mission statement of the First United Methodist Church is: Leading People to Christ; Feeding the Flock; and Serving Others. 7 Are you man enough? William Barclay: A Good Man to Know An ideal Christian loves God and neighbor, has an understanding of the Bible (and other Christian sources), practices the faith and communicates well with others. William Barclay is the ultimate example of such a person a dedicated Christian, a caring person, a long-time pastor, a teacher at the university of Glasgow for 27 years and one of the most popular writers of this century. He writes in language that anyone can understand. Barclay is best known for his Daily Study Bibles, which are easy-to-read and insightful commentaries on each of the books of the New Testament (over a million copies have been sold). Jeanie uses them for daily devotions. She has worked her way through John, Luke and Romans and is now on Matthew. In Matthew, as all his commentaries, Barclay divides the Biblical text into daily portions and comments on each of those passages. The rich background he provides puts her in position to reflect on that portion of scripture and find its meaning and direction for living (220.7). I have been re-reading Barclay s, A Spiritual Autobiography. In this memoir he looks back on his upbringing, education and career, and discusses the basic Christian beliefs that have shaped and motivated him. I find myself agreeing with many of his views and challenged by those I don t. This book is good reading for anyone wanting to grow in the faith (B). Other Barclay books in our library include: And Jesus Said (230), The Parables of Jesus (230); Jesus As They Saw Him (230); Jesus Christ for Today (230); Inspiration from Daily Life (230); The King and the Kingdom (230) and In the Hands of God (248). Take the opportunity to show off your manliness and your support of family safety in Connersville s 3 rd WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES march. This is a fundraiser for Crossroads Shelter, our local shelter for victim s of domestic violence.
