2 Dearest Church Family, Well, wasn t January a fun month? I keep running into people who really like the look of snow. I haven t found many who really like the mess it leaves. Isn t that sort of like how life is? We like doing some things and then we have to pay a price for doing it. Let me expound. I like to eat, no surprise, and I really like to eat what is not good for me. So lately, my doctor told me I should watch my sugar intake, I of course hadn t paid any attention to him for the past two years, so, at my last visit he said he wanted to put me on medicine. I asked him if he would give me six months to work on it. He had the audacity to say that he d given me two years and I hadn t done a thing about it. Hmmm, ok, so I am now paying for the luxury of eating what I shouldn t have. The good news is that I ve lost a bunch of weight, my sugar levels are mostly within the normal range and I feel better. I tell you all that so I can say that I am so excited that several men have stated they want to have a Men s group that meets once a month. The men of God are to be the spiritual head of their household. Most of us have let that responsibility lay on the shoulders of our spouses. I can see a day when the men of the First United Methodist Church of Connersville will be jumping into the ministry of the church with both feet. We have many opportunities coming up that will require the people who love Christ and the Connersville FUMC to do ministry. As you know we have been talking about hiring a Children s and Youth Director. The person hired will need a lot of help doing ministry here. We need sound Christian men and women to devote their time, talent, and gifts to the ministry of our children, Jr. High, and Sr. High folks. President Kennedy said these words at his inauguration; Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. To change those words a bit, I say; Ask not what your church can do for you, ask what you can do for Christ. These offerings were given directly to the performers. COMMUNITY SHARING The Community Sharing Foundation would like to thank you for your generous contributions. Mari-Lucy Jaramilo, Ambassador: the Shoemaker s Daughter. As a child of poverty, Jaramillo dreamed of becoming a person of noble purpose and service to others. In time she worked her way up from being a child of manual laborers to becoming U.S. ambassador to Honduras and a celebrated civil rights worker. She used her experiences with poverty, discrimination and prejudice as the basis for her life s work of solving these problems for others. At the same time she never forgot that she was the shoemaker s daughter. Timothy Tyson, Blood Done Sign My Name. This is a true story of a tiny North Carolina town, who like other small towns in the seventies, had been little touched by the civil rights movement. When Henry Marrow, a twenty-three-year-old black Viet Nam veteran was chased down and murdered by Robert Teel and his sons, young African Americans took to the streets, and while lawyers battled in the court rooms, the Klan raged in the shadows and black Vietnam veterans torched the town s tobacco warehouses. The author s father, pastor of Oxford s all-white United Methodist Church, urged the town to come to terms with its bloody racial history, but in the end he and the rest of the Tyson family were forced to move. Timothy Tyson s riveting narrative of that fiery summer brings gritty blues truth, soaring gospel vision and down-home humor to a shocking episode in our history. Queen Noor, Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life. In 1976 while visiting her father in Jordan, Lisa Halaby was casually introduced to King Hussein, widely admired in the Arab world as a voice of moderation. The next time Lisa met the King was after Hussein s wife had died, and at that time he fell in love with the out-going, athletic daughter of his good friend. Lisa Halaby became Noor Al Hussein, Queen of Jordan. This is the story of a young American woman becoming wife and partner with an Arab king, and also the refreshingly candid story of a mother coming to terms with the demands placed on her family s private life by the demands of the King s role.. But most of all it is a love story of a woman who lost her heart to a king. Maya Angelou, A Song Flung Up to Heaven, is this famous black woman s autobiographical account of her work as a writer in Harlem and involvement with Martin Luther King s March on Washington. She also tells how James Baldwin helped put her on a new path of writing after King s assassination. Also, John Gooch s Being a Christian in the Wesleyan heritage, a 2011 UMW book that didn t get on the list last month, is an excellent primer for all who wish a better understanding of what it means to be a United Methodist. *Some descriptions are taken from the publishers blurbs. 5
