1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH FIRST CONNECTION JULY, 2012 First United Methodist Church 729 Central Avenue PO Box 262 Connersville, IN Church Phone ( ) PASTOR REV. CURTIS HURLEY Parsonage Phone ( ) Web Address: connersvillefirst.org 1
2 So how did you two Come August 30 th we ll have been married 26 years. Our daughter Rachel is 23, and David is 20. Rachel graduated last year from the University of Evansville and lives in Bloomington. David will live with us and attend Ivy Tech. Don t open that! You ll get ashes all over yourself. Ashes? TO FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH REVERAND CURTIS AND MRS.LAURA HURLEY JULY 1 ST, 2012 Curtis Hurley talks to our Intrepid Reporter about himself, as well as some really important things. Reverend Hurley, thank you for taking time from sorting and packing to give us this interview. My pleasure. If you don t mind, though, I m going to keep packing while we talk. Don t sit on that shell; I use it for baptisms. Sit over here no, wait, there s something on that chair too. I ll just stand. Good idea. Secondly, you can call me Reverend Hurley if you wish, or Pastor Hurley. I also like being called by my first name, Curtis or Curt. My parents wanted to give my sister and me names that couldn t be turned into nicknames, so they named us Anita and Curtis. It worked for my sister; she s still Anita. For the first eighteen years of my life it worked for me, too. When I got to college people started calling me Curt, and that s pretty much what it s been ever since. So it really doesn t matter what people call you. As long as you call me for supper. (Laughs more than this corny joke deserves.) Mother calls me Curtis, Laura calls me Curt. Laura is your wife. Yes, for now. (Laughs again, not noticing that the interviewer is rolling his eyes.) We met when I was serving a church in Indianapolis. How we met is a good story; I ll tell you about it sometime. For Ash Wednesday. Ashes, baptismal shell worship must be important in your ministry. The worship service is one time the whole congregation is together, and it s the one thing that gives meaning to everything else we do as the church. Evangelism, education, mission, social justice they are all driven by who we are. And who we are is the body of Christ. The etymology of the word orthodox is not right belief but right praise. In other words, give God the worship he is due and you ll come to know what to believe and do. Someone told me you have a fascination with words. Always have. I was made fun of in grade school for reading the dictionary. You read the dictionary? No, not really. I d go to look up a word, and another word on the page would catch my eye. Then another, and you get the idea. It is a little embarrassing. But it paid off. Now you speak for a living. I do take preaching very seriously. In worship the word of God is delivered in two ways, the read word (scripture) and the interpreted word (sermon). I try always to keep in mind that the sermon is the word of God too. The pulpit is not my personal soapbox. We re looking forward to hearing your first sermon July 1. Well, you ll have to come the following Sunday to hear that. (Laughs.) On July first the message will be more of a personal nature, an introduction of myself. Toward which you have made a good start with this interview. Thank you. I enjoyed it. You re a good interviewer. Hand me that roll of packing tape, will you? 2
3 Dear Church family, THANK YOU CHURCH NEWS What a joy it has been to serve with you these past five years! Dave and I have loved being in ministry with you and will miss your smiles, your kind words and servant hearts. Connersville is a better place because of your love for God and this community. We are very grateful for the love gifts that were presented to us on Sunday. I was especially touched that you honored me as the handbell director, what an unexpected and generous gift! My prayer is that you will find someone to continue this important ministry. The handbell choir presented me with an engraved bell that I will treasure always. We also loved the food, fellowship, and stories. May God continue to pour out His blessings on you, the people of Connersville First UMC. Love, Dave and Myrna Galbraith ********************************** To My Church Family, Joe and I want to thank all of you for your prayers, cards, love and support for Joe s surgery. 5 KIDS CORNER Hello everyone! Summer is here with its heat, sun, and fun! Make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and safe. Speaking of water, remember to take in plenty of the Living Water (Jesus) each and every day. Without Jesus, we would shrivel up and become dry in our Christian walk. July Jul 04 Sam & Cathy Harvey Jul 08 Dallas & Rachael Mudd Jul 10 Dave & Marla Simpkins Jul 18 Joe & Bonnie Schultz Jul 19 Craig & Carol Howell Jul 25 Steve & Clair Johnson Jul 25 Dick & Jean Swain Jul 28 Chris & Beth Ann Orth Jul 31 Gary & Gayle O Neal ********************************************* Plans are in the making for VBS this month. Fear to Faith Survivor More details will be coming out shortly. Please let me know if you are willing to participate. If you have any summer schedules please get them to me so I can do my best to plan dates to not conflict and allow as many of us to join in the fun. Need adult volunteers too! Fourth of July is a day filled with celebration. As we take the time to celebrate freedom, let s not forget to remember those who have paved the way before us and still serve today to protect our rights and freedom. Sparkle, Shine, and be Safe! 7 IN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING 7 Three New Additions for July In Breakfast Epiphanies, Finding Wonder in the Everyday, David Anderson offers forty-one true-life tales that both inspire and cause reflection. Writing about his everyday experiences, he shows how our extra-ordinary God surprises us in our ordinary lives. These ten-minute reads could be included with daily devotions. Miguel A. De La Torre, Trails of Hope and Terror: Testimonies on Immigration. De La Torre, the child of undocumented immigrants and now a US citizen and professor Christian ethics, helps the reader understand the complexity of the current immigration debate. He offers personal testimonies from activists and migrants. Garrison Keillor, Life Among the Lutherans. Based on Keillor s Lake Woebegone monologues, this collection of stories is about the struggles of ordinary people in an imperfect world, the life and work of the pastor who leads them and the church to whose high standards they aspire in the small town they call home. Be prepared for Keillor s humor and insights. These books are on the shelf under the library bulletin board through July and after that time Anderson s book can be found in 248, Keillor s in F and De La Torre s in AVARAGE WEEKLY BUDGET FOR EXPENSES IS $ GENERAL MISC DATE FUND GIVING ATTEND Jun 03 $ $ Jun 10 $ $ Jun 17 $ $ Jun 24 $ $ $ $ I want to thank you for supporting the Gleaners Mobile pantry on Wednesday, June 27 th. It was a huge success, we helped feed 400 families. I believe the total poundage of food on the truck was 8000 lbs. and almost all of it was given away. It was overwhelming to see the need that this community has right now and I hope that this will be something that we will be able to do more frequently in the future. If we have any other mobile pantry s or any other events, I will be sure to let you know. Thanks again for helping me communicate to the community!!!
