A Season to Reflect Spring in Florida is not as evident as it is up north when the crocuses peak their way through the snow as it melts. Spring is in the air as the birds become more alive and the flowering bushes bloom. The month of May not only makes me think of spring, but the words of Ecclesiastes where the author states, For everything there is a season and a time. This month we also remember those who have given their life in service to our country on Memorial Day. Many visit grave sites of fallen soldiers or of family and friends during this time. The times we visit graves allows us the opportunity to pause and remember the sacrifice of others and also those who gave us life. Recently, while visiting Minnesota the plane flew over the Fort Snelling National Cemetery and it reminded me not only of those who have served, but it also brought back memories of my visits to the cemetery. I remember the urn that holds my parents and in-laws remains, and more importantly, how they lived out their life of faith. It is well worth the effort to visit the graves of loved ones and to reflect and show respect for those who have died before us. It helps us confirm that our faith journey is about facing death and learning how to live more fully by affirming our living relationships. National Cemeteries are impressive examples of memorials of those who have died. When we see thousands of tombstones etched with names and crosses, it takes us back in time and place in history that helps us today claim our identity in our country for which we stand. On Memorial Day we see flags and know that it represents our country and our many freedoms. In our religious freedom, we claim our God is the only one who ultimately sets us free. Free in faith to claim the cross for which we truly live and die. May is the month that spring reveals new birth and things start changing. Jesus said to the disciples, Consider the lilies and the birds of the air because when we see God s handiwork we remember that we can trust God will care for us in life and in death. Take time this month to pause and consider the beauty of creation as you visit the graves of loved ones. This month is a time to remember those who served our country, but we also remember that God remembers us in all of creation. If you do not go to a cemetery this month, visit the Emmanuel Memorial Garden and remember the hope that is present during this season. Pastor Robert O. Hall 2

Help Emmanuel and Florida-Bahamas Synod Support of Harbor House of Central Florida Every year the Synod Assembly takes on a project. This year, the project is support of the Harbor House of Central Florida which pulls people to safety from abusive situations. They provide emergency shelter, court injunctions, and a hotline as well as community education to prevent and end domestic abuse. The Mid-Gulf conference has been asked to collect personal care items for use at the emergency shelter as well as gift cards to support people transition from an abusive situation. We will be collecting items and gift cards in the narthex before and after worship May Besides the list below, there will be a "take along" list of items and gift cards requested at the Welcome Center. Thank you for your generous support! 4 I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has donated to our many fundraisers (bake sales, car washes, stock sale, etc.). We have finally met our goal! The kids are getting really excited about the Youth Gathering!! We only have about 2 months before we leave on June 27th. Upcoming events: VBS - June 4th to 8th, 9am to noon Confirmation - June 24th Youth Gathering - June 27th to July 1st MEET OUR YOUTH Jacob Schubauer is an eighth grader at Venice Middle School. He is an excellent student and is a member of the NJHS. Jacob loves learning and is hoping to one day become a scientist or marine biologist. In his free time he enjoys reading, gaming, fishing, and playing with his brother. Jacob enjoys playing the clarinet in the band, and is excited to join the VHS marching band next year. He is looking forward to 4

the summer and attending the ELCA youth gathering. FROM THE PARISH NURSE~ I am shaking things up a bit. We are going to have a Blood Drive on SATURDAY!!! What???!!! Yep, on May 19 th, the One Blood bus will be in the parking lot from 3:30pm-6:30pm. I know you all have been saving and building up your blood since I cancelled 2 drives due to parking issues. So let s have a really great turnout, and show them what Emmanuel is made of (red blood cells, plasma, etc.). I have not planned any kind of programs for the near future. There was not a great turnout for the Tidewell Hospice two presentations, or the Downsizing one, so I am a little gun shy to have another. I feel bad for the presenters (and a little embarrassed) when only 7 or 8 people show up. I can t seem to find the right day or time for them. Now with the tight time frame between services, hosting events on Sundays is not a good option. I would really appreciate your feedback, thoughts, help and opinions both on program content and when to have them. Thought for the day: I want to be like a caterpillar. Eat a lot. Sleep for a while. Wake up beautiful. Barb Spenks Parish Nurse 3 rd Annual Beach Picnic Grab your cowgirl or cowboy hat and boots! The 3 rd Annual Beach Picnic, a fun country western event, will be held on Thursday, May 17 th from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Maxine Barritt Park Pavilion in Venice. A catered dinner of chicken, pulled pork and all the fixings, lemonade, ice tea, and dessert will be served at 5:30 pm. Come and enjoy the games, music, dancing and the, Wanted, photo booth. Tickets will be on sale in the Narthex beginning April 28/29. Adults $12.00, children 12 years and under $5.00 cash or check. In case of rain we will meet in the Fellowship Hall. 5

May s Community Outreach line on your giving Envelope will go to the Venice BackPack Kids Program. This program is part of the National Foodbank Network supporting the neediest of Venice school children with backpack sized groceries for weekends and holidays. Take home food for six meals is included. Nearly 400 Venice area children are now being helped by the program. Under the direction of Interfaith Outreach, volunteers from these faith-based institutions gather twice monthly at the Venice United Church of Christ to unload nearly two tons of groceries from the All Faiths Food Bank delivery truck, sort and pack it into backpack-sized units and then deliver it to the schools for distribution to the neediest of their students. Supported schools (and the groups that support them) include: Laurel-Nokomis School Venice-Nokomis United Methodist Church Venice Elementary School Jacaranda Trace and Lift Church Garden Elementary School St. Mark s Episcopal Church and the Venice United Church of Christ Taylor Ranch Elementary School Knights of Columbus/Our Lady of Lourdes Venice High School Jewish Congregation of Venice and Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Venice Glenallen Elementary, North Port School Lakeside Lutheran Church and Emmanuel Lutheran Church. During May, please give generously to this designated community outreach charity. Thank you on behalf of your Outreach Committee! If you collect cans for Coffee Talk, be aware that the shed in the parking lot off the Fellowship Hall is not going to be able to remain in that spot. There will no longer be a shed on Emmanuel's site. You can drop off your saved bags of cans behind the peach colored fence (off of Plaza Mayor). It is very important for you to put them with the other bags of cans so they don't accidently end up in the trash! For now, this is the best solution. 6

We, as a congregation have affirmed the work of the Long Range Planning Committee and committed ourselves to using the Plan as a guide for the next 5 years. During their presentation, the Committee made reference to the fact that the ELCA in this country is on the decline but not here in Venice FL! We are on a roll and we plan to maintain that roll. It is going to be exciting to see where we are 5 years from now. You don't want to miss the 3rd Annual Church Picnic this May 17th. Maxine Barrett Park is a great venue for anything. Both Marge Collin and Barb McLauchlin love a good time, so I know it will be fun. In fact, the whole committee loves a good time! 7 (continued on next page)

I want to take a minute and tell you about a special young lady we have as Youth Representative on Church Council. Her name is Emily Bernier. She has grown up in Emmanuel. She has gone to Sunday school, VBS, Confirmation, family weekends at Luther Springs and all the other events that we have for our youth and will go to the national Youth Event this summer. Sarah Hurlburt is her counterpart. Both girls were so shy when they were younger, but have grown into wonderful young ladies. We as a church family have helped them learn that they are God's children and are very special. So many good things are taking place and yet we are still living in a broken world. So, while we are on this journey, we will continue to experience a few bumps in the road. One of those is security. I am going to meet with an officer from the Venice Police Dept. that specializes in church security. I can't believe that I am even saying that but that is the reality of the world we live in. Please pray for Emmanuel that we can remain a welcoming church, but also make sure that our members feel secure. Yours in Christ, Lois Steketee President News from Haiti Three months ago, there was a family of 6 who did not come to church. We went to see them on many occasions but they were not home. Because they were living in the middle of a field, it was impossible to find someone to ask for them. When one of our members who has a motorcycle was driving around, he saw the lady crossing the street. He stopped and called to her. While talking, she said that her husband fell on a motorcycle and broke his ankle. They went to the Doctors without Borders, however, they didn t have the proper equipment to treat him because of the way his ankle was broken. He spent a month in the hospital suffering. And now, she said, with no money left, he is being treated by a midwife. This is another part of doing mission in Haiti the unexpected. This man was the breadwinner of his family and now he is sick with no one to help them. Thank God that Emmanuel, through the Helping Hand to Haitians (HH2H) has provided money to buy goats and to help families with money to start small businesses. This lady, who is now eight months pregnant, is a recipient of the HH2H. This program is a part of our calling that reaches out to those most in need. Ten more people are going to be the beneficiary of this program this year. On behalf of the church here, I say thank you to Emmanuel Lutheran Church for your willingness to share the Gospel with us in this special way. Peace, Pastor Livenson 8

you! Thank you to all who support our worship life here at Emmanuel choir, men s chorus, soloists, and bell ringers, brass, guitarists and pianists, acolytes, torch bearers and crucifers, lectors and assisting ministers, ushers and greeters, Altar Guild and proofreaders. Thank Now that summer is approaching, it s time to think about the Summer Chorale. Our schedule will be to sing one 8:30 a.m. Sunday service and one 5:00 p.m. Saturday service each month. Rehearsals will begin in June and will be held twice a month on Wednesdays at 10:00am in the balcony of the sanctuary. We also rehearse 45 minutes before each service that we sing. So, if you can t make the Wednesday rehearsal, just come early on the particular service that we will sing. Please call ( ) or me (kbowker@emmanuel-elca.org) for more information. All are welcome! Kris Bowker Minister of Music and Worship The congregational response to the Christian Education Committee survey was inspiring. We received so many ideas, as well as information on preferred times and dates for classes to meet. This information is crucial to our committee s ability to maximize educational opportunities at convenient meeting times. We are very grateful for the abundance of feedback that was provided. Suggested topics included: being Lutheran; modern social issues such as; immigration, gun laws, abortion, media violence; prayer; Haiti and Pastor Levinson; Psalms, John, Proverbs; ELCA; Reformation; stewardship of our planet; and many others. Our committee will take this information into consideration as we plan our future events. We will need even more help from our fellow members. Christian Ed will require volunteers to lead the instruction process and members to attend our new classes. Our goal is to make Christian education as accessible, enjoyable and attractive as we possibly can. Thank you all so much for your help with this mission! Christian Education members: Kathy Anderson Birdie Clark Joel Avilla Cindy Reynders Joy Lundahl 9

Dorcas Quilting Mission THE FINANCE CORNER This month s article reviews Emmanuel s First Quarter financial results. Our income was over budget by 19% and our operating expenses were under budget by 9.6%. These numbers are similar to past years and will enable us to cover the reduced income of the summer months. All committees are operating well within their budgets. Capital expenditures are within what we had planned for. Members having any questions about the quarter results should call the church treasurer, Ed Crary ( ). Our church bookkeeper, Marty Light has resigned. He and Lois have moved to Florida s east coast to be closer to family. Marty has served Emmanuel faithfully as both Treasurer and Bookkeeper over the years and will be greatly missed. Ed Crary, Treasurer The Widows Support Group meets the first Tuesday of the month for lunch (12noon) at Bob Evans. May 1st please join us! If you have not attended before and are interested, please contact Jackie at with any questions. Money donated by the congregation enabled us to purchase 2 sewing machines. Our membership continues to grow as does our need for equipment and supplies. We could not accomplish our mission without your support. When we say "God's Work - Our Hands", that certainly includes your hands. Jean Price Meets every third Tuesday of the month at 7:30am at Popi's Place, located in the Rialto Shopping Center, 648 S. Tamiami Tr. All men of the congregation are invited! Mark your calendar - May 15th. Thank You A hearty thank you to the soup providers and servers: WELCA, staff, choir, Council and other volunteers. You all did wonderfully with the variety and number of soups. A special thank you to the EVENT group for all the preparation and cleanup. Also, a thank you to my husband, Bob,for 5 weeks of dish washing and very little griping! It was a very successful Lenten season. Thanks again, Jane Riggs 10

We would like to thank all the people who prayed for us, sent cards, and made visits while Dick was in the hospital, in Pinebrook Center Rehabilitation and after he was finally able to return home. Every kindness was so appreciated and the prayers were felt by both of us. It is wonderful to be blessed with such a wonderful caring church family. God bless, Dick & Jan Quinn Jan's Quinn's Exercise Class has resumed! Please join us (both men and women) Monday mornings at 10:00am in the choir room. Exercises will accommodate all levels of fitness and ability. Children's Closet We continue to serve families who come for assistance. We are running low on small boys' and girls' sox, sizes 2-4. Bring donations to the tub in the Welcome Center. Coming the end of June, everyone's favorite Undie Sunday! Watch for sales/clearance of children's underwear. All sizes needed, but especially for older children. Library Rumor We will have another give-away table in May in order to clear our shelves for new additions. Come and browse and take home some treasures! FAMILY PROMISE SCHEDULE 2018 The Family Promise Schedule for the remainder of 2018 is as follows: May 27 - June 3 August 12 - August 19 November 25 - December 2 If your group or committee uses Rowe Hall (Rooms 101, 103 and 105) any of those dates you will not have access to the rooms. Please plan meetings, etc. accordingly and check with Jan Miller ( ) for available space! Accommodating everyone's needs during these weeks is complicated and space fills up quickly. If you missed the opportunity to hear the Long Range Plan presentation, printed copies of the plan are available at the Welcome Center, along with the "Share your Talents" response. Your participation in implementing the plan is crucial! Help be a vital part of Emmanuel's future. 11
