Well-traveled Roads It is often suggested to take the road less traveled in life; however taking the road that is welltraveled can also teach us valuable lessons. Looking for shark s teeth is a hobby for many people in Venice and those who visit this part of the state. Debbie and I have discovered when we first moved here that there were certain places we could find sharks teeth besides the beaches. One of these places is developments where the earth has been moved and the teeth come to the surface. These teeth are typically small, but occasionally very large. Everyone has different ways of looking for them and we have explored most of those ways. The place that people often miss or overlook are the wide well-traveled dirt roads where one would least expect to find them. Recently, we found a very large tooth in the middle of a well-traveled dirt road. It was a place others ignored to search because it was laying right in the midst of an open area. Our faith is a lifelong journey and Lent is similar to moving along a well-traveled road where we can reflect on the path that Jesus took to the cross, from the wilderness into the homes and hearts of those who were weak and weary. Sometimes the common roads that are traveled regularly can reveal new treasures that are often overlooked, just as the Lenten season occurs yearly but we can focus on new aspects and re-learn scripture each time. Our faith is about traveling on that road and understanding that it is good to be on that path of prayer, devotion, reading the word, and gathering to hear the story over and over again. To hear the old, familiar story of Jesus and his love, a well traveled road. Finding that large tooth in the middle of the dirt road made me think of how sometimes walking on common paths can lead us to discover new treasures along the way. Jesus said, Where your treasure is there will your heart be also. During the journey of Lent look for those treasures of faith that will fill your heart with the message of God s love and know that faithful people have learned that the path may be difficult, but the reward leads to eternal life. Keeping our faith open to returning to that well-traveled road throughout our lives will keep us steadfast in God s word and reveal the heart of our purpose. Pastor Robert O. Hall 2

Emmanuel Lenten Program The evening Lenten Program continues with the final three biblical call stories. From both the Old and New Testament, these stories remind us that responding to God s invitation is the beginning of a journey that requires commitment and personal transformation. Worship begins at 5:30 pm in the sanctuary, followed by a light meal and discussion in the Fellowship Hall, concluding at 7pm. The series of call stories remaining: March 7: Joshua and Caleb Numbers 27:18-20; Numbers 14:24 March 14: Jesus Disciples Mark 1:16-20; 2:13-14 March 21: The Great Commission Matthew 28: Everyone is encouraged and invited to attend! THE THREE DAYS Paschal Triduum 2018 The Three Days One Service For centuries in the Christian Church these three days, which encompass the time from Maundy Thursday evening through the evening of Easter Day, were called the Paschal Triduum, Latin for Three Days of Easter. In the worship resource of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Evangelical Lutheran Worship, they are simply called the Three Days. These liturgies are found on pages in our hymnal, the ELW. So the liturgies of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Vigil of Easter unfold in a single movement as the church passes with Christ from darkness into light, through death into life. In these most holy and solemn days of the church year, we have an opportunity to worship as a faith community, continuing to walk the Lenten journey together with a heightened expectation of the celebration of Christ s victory over death on Easter Day. Kris Bowker Minister of Music and Worship 3

"Whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31 I m reminded every day that ALL things are possible with God!! I was starting to worry about meeting our goal of $21,000 to get our young people to the Houston Youth Gathering. Thanks to everyone who donated this past weekend at our Stock in our Youth sale, we are only about $6,000 away from that goal. Some of the beautiful quilts that are made here at the church by our quilters will be auctioned off on March 10 th and 11 th, with all proceeds going to the Youth Gathering. The format will be a "Silent" auction so if you really, really want to win a quilt, check the auction sheets often! If you are interested in helping with our Shipwrecked Rescued by God VBS this summer, come to the first planning meeting on March 4 th at 10:30 in the new Sunday school room by the playground. We need volunteers for station leaders, group leaders, kitchen help, and many more. If you can t make the meeting but would like to help with VBS me at kelleyinsrq@msn.com. Again, I would like to thank my Emmanuel family for always supporting our youth!! In His name, Kelley Hurlburt Youth and Family Director The first of our Spring New Member Orientations has taken place but you can still join! The second part of the orientation takes place this Sunday, March 4th after the 11:00am worship service. If you are considering making Emmanuel your church home, please join us this Sunday. We will gather in the Fellowship Hall for lunch and Pastor Hall will lead a "meet and greet" session. You will then have the opportunity to hear from staff members as well as a few ministry leaders. A tour of the Office Center will be available. You may pick up membership papers at the Visitor's Kiosk in the Narthex or they will be available at the lunch. The following Sunday, March 11th we will celebrate our new members at the 8:30am worship service. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office at

FROM THE PARISH NURSE~ Our winter is coming to a close, but unfortunately the flu season is not. be mindful of hand washing and continue to use the hand sanitizer pew! If you are sick, PLEASE stay home. You won t win any points at functions when you show up sick and infect everyone else. Please continue to available in every work or other At some point in our lives we need to start getting rid of all the stuff we have worked so hard to accumulate. But it seems that all of it is important and meaningful, so how do we do that? And how much do we really need and how much do we get rid of? Then, where do we get rid of it? If I move from this house to this apartment or to this assisted living place, what will fit, what can I take with me? These are some of the questions that will be answered in the presentation by realtor Valerie LaBoy, MBA. She will tell us how to downsize, and who to call to get help. Then she will also show us how to determine the right size of housing we need. Some of us will be perfectly happy in a small one room living space, but some need much more than that. How do you figure out for sure what you will be happy and comfortable living in- before committing. Come to the presentation Downsizing, Rightsizing on Wednesday, March 28 th in the Fellowship Hall from 1-2 pm. No reservations needed, light refreshments will be available. Don t forget Daylight Savings time on the 11 th, Happy St. Patrick s Day on the 17 th, first day of Spring on the 20 th, and Holy Week starting with Palm Sunday on the 25 th. March is just jam packed! So eat right, stay healthy and look forward to a Blessed Easter on April 1st. Barb Spenks Parish Nurse Global Mission Update The missionary support envelopes in your offering box go to the ELCA for the support of Dr. Joe and Rev. Deborah Troester in Africa and Dr. Eliseo Perez in Jamaica. Dr. Joe Troester is the ELCA's East Africa representative. He supervises projects in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Sudan. He reports," Perhaps the biggest project in our region was completed this past November 16, the dedication of the Reconciliation Lutheran Center in Juba, South Sudan. This beautiful center includes a sanctuary for worship, office space, classrooms, and a clinic. The project has brought together people from several of south Sudan's warring ethnic groups. Together we worshiped in peace as the center was dedicated. People danced in the street before enjoying a huge meal together." Dr. Troester also works with water projects there. Dr. Eliseo Perez teaches at the seminary in Jamaica, mentoring Lutheran students from the islands of the Caribbean. He recently attended the installation of our new bishop and met with Pastor Livenson, a graduate of that seminary. They hope to work together on a theological training curriculum for the deacons of the church in Haiti. Please keep them all in your prayers! 5

A Note from the President This past Tuesday night the 2018 Church Council met for the first time to conduct business. What a great bunch of council members we have. In fact, let me introduce them to you. Lois Steketee, President, loooong time member of Emmanuel. Keith Struble, Vice-President, is Lois' wing man because he loves to pour over documents and has a great business mind. Ed Crary, Treasurer, talk about a business mind. He and the Finance Committee keep the church on a straight financial tract. Gail Authier, Secretary, is a whiz on the computer and keeps great notes. She and Jerry are looking forward to moving into VOTI in a few weeks. Mike Anderson, Worship & Music Committee, is new to the board but has been very active with the Long Range Planning Committee. He comes with lots of enthusiasm. Marge Collin, Fellowship Committee, heads this new committee. Talk about enthusiasm! If you have any ideas, boy is she willing to listen. Lauren Mosolino-Muia, Youth & Family Committee, is also new but not new to our area. Lauren is a super sponge absorbing everything we throw her way. Rich Neal, Stewardship Committee, is an ole work horse of Emmanuel. He started to revitalize the Stewardship program last year and is doing a great job! Chuck Zentner, Property Committee, works with his team for the church, but also volunteers at Habitat for Humanity. He went on one of the Haiti trips. Emily Bernier, Youth Rep, has grown up in our church. She is a junior at Venice High. Joy Lundahl, Christian Education Committee, heads this requested new committee. She ran a day care center in her former life, but now takes care of rescue dogs at the SPCA. Gordon Storey, Outreach Committee. He and wife, Karen also head up Family Promise. They love to travel. Denise D'Eath, Member At-Large, will be on the Mutual Ministry Committee. Barbara McLauchlin, Member At-Large, is another ole work horse for Emmanuel. She is the original Energizer Bunny! Rich Veleber, Nominating Committee is also head usher for Saturday night and leads a Sunday morning Bible study. Pam Neal, WELCA President, represents all the women of the church. And then of course we have Pastor Hall, the BIG guy. What can you say about someone who loves to preach as much as he does?! Find their pictures in the bulletin board in the Narthex they are a great group. 6

Emmanuel Lutheran Church Endowment Fund All of us are indebted to the past to those who precede us. We drink from wells we have not dug. We enjoy liberties we have not won. We share faith whose foundations we have not laid. And at the same time, all of us are seeds of the future of those who succeed us. We dream dreams. We see visions. We hold convictions. Their fruition is one we know only others who follow us will behold. I recall ever-so-vividly a conversation with the son of a prominent church member. Mother was very loyal to the church during her lifetime. She was an active member and gave generously. We were surprised she overlooked some sort of ongoing support for the church after she was gone. But then, maybe they never asked. THE PURPOSE OF THE FUND The main purpose of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Endowment Fund is to receive and manage money or property from capital gifts, bequests, trusts, memorial, life insurance and other special gifts to the church, all in accordance with rules and regulations of The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. USES OF THE FUND It is intended that income from the Fund not be used for ongoing church operating expenses. Rather, the undesignated income earned by the Fund will be allocated to expand and enrich the mission and ministry of the church and to assist in capital improvement of the church and its facilities. Possible examples include: Mission Seed money or special capital programs for community outreach Education Youth Capital Projects Worship & Music Evangelism Over the coming months your Endowment Fund Committee will be hosting a series of Town Hall style meetings focused on giving and estate planning. I am asking you to please attend one of these meetings if you are interested in helping us plan for the future. Richard Miller, Endowment Fund Committee Member 7

AND Girls Youth WELCA Logo The cross and a white lily identifies the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as children of God; baptized, forgiven, adopted into God s family, full of grace and hope in eternal life. It is a reminder of the growth, beauty and vitality that rises out of that life-giving baptism water. It is also a reminder of the mission of the church to Go, therefore, make disciples in all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. We are celebrating 30 Years as Women of the ELCA. As with most things, change is inevitable and WELCA is no different. There have been many changes over the past 30 years; however, the one thing that has not changed is the dedication our ladies have to serve our Lord, Jesus Christ. Although there maybe changes in our future, I know our ladies are up for the challenge. Here is proof of that in the amount of quilts and kits that they have provided this year.
